Run Down and Dirty 12/30/2011

While I'm sure this place was great in its day it's now as broken down and dirty as the rest of the boardwalk. Luna park got new management recently, so maybe they'll try to turn it around, but I doubt it. The idea of a beachfront amusement park is great, but when the beach and the park are this dirty, it's almost not worth it to go to either. more

Old Time Fave Still A Summertime Must 7/16/2010

Paying to get on a beach is lame. Not a fan of commuter trains, either. So for a beach getaway that's as stress-free as the local train ride over there, try Brooklyn's own Coney Island. The new beachfront amusement park, Luna Park, has plenty of diversions for the young at heart, along with staples like the death defying Cyclone roller coaster and the classic treat, Wonder Wheel. Carnival games, boardwalk grub, and sandy beach bars abound, as Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs and crispy powdered-sugar-topped funnel cakes steal the show. Its best bet? Friday nights boast the duo of favorite American pastimes: fireworks on the beach and Brooklyn Cyclones baseball (the Mets' minor league team) under bright lights. Pros: Games, Beach, Fireworks, Tradition, Accessible Cons: Dirty, Crowded, Long Local Train Ride more

Coney Island will change in the years to come!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7/14/2009

I live near here. I'm used to it. Roller Coasters are old. Rides make me throwwwww up. Dirty broken beer bottle and cracked eggs on the beach sand, also used dirty neeeedles. People were injured and died on numerous rides. They are changing this place with casinos and a water park I heard. Lifeguards are bossy and mean and irresponsable and have fun instead of watching people swim in the waters. Tidal waves are high. circus, Aquarium, sideshows, concerts, and friday night fireworks are ok. I record the fireworks on my camcorder. Beautiful colors. What is retarded is that you have to pay a quarter in Astroland to use the bathroom. That shocked me. I was on the haunted house ride and one of the skeletons wacked me in the back ouch. Perverts stroll down the streets of this neighborhood often so beware. I once got hitttt by a bike on the boardwalk. The sunsets on the beach.pier is awesome. I wish I can move away from here. This place needs to be cleaner and needs a makeover. Best part is the boardwalk beers and nathans. Pros: Tourist Attraction, Rides, Games, Entertainments Cons: Run Down Area more

All It's Cracked Up to Be 5/15/2002

They say NYC is a microcosm of America--maybe that's why the rest of the nation is so wary of us, and Coney Island is the very embodiment of that fear. Garish, vulgar, crowded, hectic, hyped, tacky--it's an unreconstructed city outing beyond compare. The food, the rides, the sideshows (yes, sideshows, can you believe it?) -- just get out here before gentrification sweeps it all away. more

Freaking Excellent 5/12/2002

While the previous mayor did his best to sanitize Times Square, he pretty much disregarded this seedier, saucier part of our great metropolis. Yes, the beach is littered. Sure, the rides can be rickety. But frankly, I like it that way. This place is pure atmosphere from the moment I emerge from the F train to the second I get to the Freakshow--and everything in between. This is the best place to go when Bindlestiff isn't in town? As far as the amusement park, the guys working the games still have that hypnotizing patter. The roller coaster rides are good. Carnie culture isn't dead. It's alive and kicking in Coney Island. Pros: Bright Colors, Easy Public Transit Cons: Melanoma more
