A great orchestra 3/21/2006

The CSO is a fabulous orchestra! I used to attend their concerts frequently when I lived in Denver, and I also knew a couple of the musicians. They offer a little something for everyone: pops favorites, kid-friendly concerts (gotta introduce the little ones to some culture!), standards from every era of art-music and even a few treats for 20th (and 21st) century music fans. They have an admirable presence and involvement in the community. Did you know they have recorded several CDs and even did the sound track to a children's movie? Boettcher Concert Hall's "theater in the round" layout does provide some acoustical challenges for the orchestra, but they are generally very successful in overcoming them. It also allows the audience to feel closer to the orchestra, particularly in the 'parquet' seats. The free summer concerts they offer in city parks can be a nice introduction if you haven't been to their concerts before. more

Perfection! 2/21/2006

I think we Denverites are extremely lucky to have the quality of cultural offerings that this city offers. We are a cow town no longer! I recently attended a performance of the Colorado Symphony and was blown away. First of all, the acoustics at the DCPA are such where you can hear a pin drop from the last row. That intensified my listening pleasure to no end. The performance itself was flawless, with a variety of pieces to suit every taste. Accompanying nearly every piece was a fascinating explanation of it's history and nuances, provided by the conductor to everyone's delight. And the soloist--just a young girl--was superb! Plus, the symphony and the theater seem to be the one place where people actually get out of their jeans and dress up for the night! more

CSO 8/25/2005

We've been to the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO) several times. They're a good group, and it's worth the money (if you like that sort of thing). We generally sit behind the orchestra because it's less expensive, and It's fun to be able to watch the conductor's face. I must say their best performance that I've seen was the Rite of Spring (May 2005). If you're looking for some culture for the evening, catch a CSO concert. more
