Editorial review from Citysearch 6/17/2013

I am by no means picky, and as a small business owner completely understand what it is like to only depend on yourself and try to make a living. I also never ""review"" anyone unless it is praise, as I dont see the point in trying to bring someone down rather than up. That being said, this my first negative review & I hope my last, but this has gone so far beyond ""bad"" that I need to share...\r \r These people clearly do not understand being small business owners and the value of customer service, or at least human decency & will do everything for a dollar. The ""owner"" publicly stated that he had no time to discuss rates, as he wanted to watch a basketball game. We purposely told the friendly & nice front desk staff that we still owed the remaining deposit...we could have gotten away without paying (would never, ever do that). The rooms were filfthy- there were torn up mattresses with pee stains on it, a garbage bin literally with ""filfth"" in it, if you know what I mean...we each had at least 4 bites on us before leaving. The owner called my sister deaf (she happens to be severely heAring impaired)..this happened to be when we went into the office when our room key didn't work and he threatened ""evicting us"" if we didnt pay another $495 for the night (really??). We willingly called the cops because it was 1am and we we astonished someone would treat us that way. The cops came and apologized to us for his actions, told us that he does this all the time and that he will do everything he can for a dollar...which was clear to us. We got locked out of our room by him, and were not allowed to get our bags. Tried to empathize with him and discuss this ""like humans"" and he said ""he didnt have time."" The cops, the town, the other amazing small business owners all gave us the rundown on this guy, as apparently he has done this many, many times before (why isnt he shut down?) This all being said, I would highly advise anyone with even half a brain to never deal with this man...Unless you are a 350lb man stating you will shoot him, he will try to take advantage of you. The entire thing is sad to me, wonder what happened in his life that would cause him to do this to people, and honestly feel bad for him. more

treated like garbage 8/29/2008

My wife and i wanted to get away overnight without our small child, so we decided to stay on the island and we settled on Cleggs. We opted for the late check-out the following day so we could take the beach in before heading home.In the morning of our last day we were told we could not check out late( even though we paid for it the day prior and was told that there was no record that we even paid for the late check-out. ( which we did and i had receipt showing so). After we said we will check out early and packed our bags and headed to the office to a young women who was in no way able to talk to people, she left to get a i think manager, i say think because she was just as rude and unpolished. Instead of coming in and apologizing for the mistake, immediately gives us an attitude as if it was our fault for we were given a late checkout. everything about my experience there was bad. The rooms , the cleanliness and the manager makes the Cleggs most undesireable Pros: its on fire island Cons: the staff more

Insect Bites are free... 8/17/2008

I stayed here this past weekend in one if the ""suite"" rooms so we had our own bathroom which had a huge hole in the wall about 20 mosquitos at a time in the bathroom which also went out to the sleeping area...I sprayed myself with OFF before going to bed and even wore longer shorts to sleep and woke up with both my legs covered in red dotted bites..some mosquito bites and some look like gnat bites...I even had 2 on my face...I will never stay there again. I am covered with insect bites, the paint is peeling, holes in the walls, the light shines right through, no TV/radio/clock...\r They ran out of beach chairs that they say they supply you.\r If you are going to spend so much money (250 a night) I say stay somewhere else, it is NOT worth the BITES!! Pros: right by the ferry Cons: insects, holes in walls more

Avoid Clegg's if you want a clean room 10/16/2006

I stayed at Clegg's with my son for 4 days and the room had mosquitoes in it, a big gash/hole under the sink about a foot wide and long--I was afraid of what might come out of the hole at night, the room had holes on the walls and mold--I would not recommend it, I stayed in the studio which was supposed to be better than the regular rooms, would not go back there again!!! Pros: close to town and the ferry Cons: the room was not clean, had mosquitoes, holes in the wall and bathroom more

Like your old college dorm room, but at the beach 7/28/2006

This place is a decent place to stay provided the weather is nice and you don't need or wish to be inside; the accommodations are akin to what you would find in an aged college dorm room. The beds are adequate; the dressers are adequate; the air conditioners are adequate. There are absolutely no perks. The shared bathrooms (for the non-suite units) are clean; the staff is nice; they have chairs and umbrellas which they allow you to take to the beach. Regarding the location, you are just steps from the ferry and a couple of blocks from the beach. The fri-sat rates are awfully high; it's a better value sun nights and during the week. Would I stay here again? Yes. It's like the mastercard commercial: the value in being able to stay over in fire island on a nice weekend - priceless. Pros: location, convenience, staff Cons: dumpy, tattered more

The best on Fire Island 1/20/2005

Clegg's Hotel is a located in the center of Ocean Beach Fire Island. The hotel's decor is simple and clean. We stayed at other hotels and recommend that you choose Clegg's. Price of your stay is average for the town and cheap considering your facing the bay. It also is just a short walk to the ocean. We look forward to returning back to Clegg's Hotel. Pros: LOCATION, CLEAN, FRIENDLY more
