Well Maintained! 8/5/2011

Service is excellent, facilities are clean and well maintained. I love this place! Been to several other gyms in the area and Kinetix has been the best by far. Staff consistently cleans and circulates throughout the gym. Plus my kids love the child care, they get upset when it is time to leave. more

Good place to workout 7/6/2011

I have been going to this gym for over 10 years. Started when it was Gold's Gym. It has definitely had some bad moments, but currently the owners are great, and the equipment is in good repair. The Body Pump, Body Attack, pilates, yoga, and spinning classes are all excellent--I haven't tried the others. The landlord for the building is pitiful about making building repairs, but that isn't the fault of the owners. The only downside is that the showers aren't cleaned regularly enough, and the shower curtains get kind of grungy because of this. But there is always hot water (contrary to an earlier post). If you are looking for fancy, this is not your gym. If you are just looking for a good workout, you should check it out. more

Great deals 7/6/2011

I've been a member of this gym for over 6 years now. I pay 2 years at a time, as does my wife, always the same price: a little over $400 for 2 years, which is about $17 a month, with childcare and all the classes. That is an incredible deal, considering one yoga class can be $15. The staff members that deal with payments and memberships can definitely be like car dealers, but I give the terms: 2 years, here is what I'm paying, with all the classes and child care, take it or leave it. They always take it, since it is 2 years without any hassle or billings (no extra expenses for them). Even if you leave early, you won't be out much money compared to what you would pay in another gym. Avoid the monthly charges - that could be a big hassle. Some friends have paid more for the same terms, so it is worth trying to bargain them down. The classes have very good instructors. Kinetix is flowing over with creative, athletic people, and that is reflected in the classes. The yoga is excellent. Our kids have always enjoyed the child care.. This is no fancy place, but they're dealing with a very bad building, and have fixed it up to some degree. The owners live nearby, and this is not a chain anymore, so your money is staying local. Many residents, myself included, have no desire to drive to work out. Save the environment, and walk or ride your bike! more

Excellent value 6/22/2011

I have been a member for about 3 years, since I moved to here within walking distance of the gym. Totally different experience from my former gym, which was brand new, high-priced, and beautiful--but Kinetix Fitness has all the quirky charm of the town surrounding it. Yes, pigeons are nesting in the entrance overhang and sometimes big chunks of yucky stuff fall out from there. Yes, there are really big potholes in the parking lot and a junkyard of abandoned equipment behind the building. Yes, it kind of smells bad and stuff is broken a lot. It doesn't really matter because the people who work there are always super-friendly; the gym members are interesting, fun-loving people from every imaginable walk of life; and the class instructors are talented and reliable. I pay one lump sum every two years and overall my membership is an excellent value. I wouldn't trade my place in this special little piece of the community for anything! more

This is a great place 6/14/2011

I don't know anything about the problems some people seem to have with canceling, but I paid upfront for a year and a half and got a great deal of about $23/month. I guess if you are the type who constantly needs to be pampered and likes to imagine you're living in L.A. or New York or something, this place is not for you. But if you are budget-conscious, don't need frills, and are just interested in EXERCISING and keeping fit, this is a great place. The yoga teachers are some of the best in the area -- that fact alone makes this place a great deal, as I could spend more than my monthly gym payment on just two yoga classes at some of the yoga studios around town. more

Very happy at kinetix 6/14/2011

We have been at other gyms in the area and we are very happy at Kinetix.... The classes are great, the instructors rock!!! The staff and the members are very friendly...We have no complaints, something was broken and it was fixed with in a week..The place stays clean...We are glad we made the move.. more

Could not be happier 6/13/2011

Could not be happier with my experience at Kinetix. Staff is always friendly and helpful. I've seen a lot of negative reviews, and I just don't get it. Hands down the best gym I've been to in years. Well worth the price more

This gym change my life 6/13/2011

This gym has changed my life. I joined weighing around 260 lbs and I have since lost around 50 lbs in 8 months. At first I thought the price was pretty high for a gym, but after seeing my progress in the past 8 months, I feel as though it is well worth it. My trainer is absolutely AMAZING and I cannot wait to see where I am at in the next 8 months! Also, I am very impressed with the childcare center. more

Training staff is excellent 6/13/2011

By FAR the best thing I have ever done for my health is to work w/ a personal trainer. Trainer Matt Golden at C.Fitness has a comprehensive understanding of physiology, anatomy, and optimal training techniques, and customizes workouts based on individual needs, goals, and limitations. In past, had spent thousands on medical treatment for shoulder injury-with no real improvement. A few sessions w/ Matt, who coordinated a plan w/ my MD, produced HUGE improvement. Matt not only makes workouts extremely efficient and effective, but enjoyable--which keeps me consistently in the gym and having fun at it. I am a lot stronger, more toned, and far more pain-free from a variety of sports-related injuries than before I started working with a trainer. Also, as a Type 1 diabetic, consistent efficient workouts greatly improve my blood sugar control. Based on the past 2.5 years training w/ Matt, I found that I spend far less money, with much better results, on a trainer than on MD visits and prescription meds. Matt has worked wonders w/ my 72 yr.old mother, my 13 yr.old nephew, and even my veteran weightlifting brother. I don't have time/inclination to become an expert in sports physiology training-rather, I leave it to Matt, and just enjoy working out with an expert. Re: Carolina Fitness-- I like the fact that it is not a meat-market gym, and fits the needs of a wide diversity of clients. CF is a microcosm of the community, where you can see old friends and meet new ones. All the equipment that one could ever need is available, and the training staff is excellent more

Poured a lot of time and money into this place 6/13/2011

This place, I'll admit, used to be super sketchy and gross and dirty. But they have poured a lot of time and money and paint and new ceiling tiles into the place, and the staff have really improved in terms of attitude and competence. The classes are amazing, especially yoga. The childcare is great, I feel comfortable leaving my infant son there. more

a horrible, dreadful gym. don't contribute a penny to them. 9/27/2010

I am so disappointed in Carolina FItness (aka Kinetix). When I joined 2 years ago with my wife, we thought it was a good price and a reasonably decent gym. The nicest feature was the classes that were included in the membership. I never took advantage of them but my wife loved the lifting classes and instructors were / are awesome. But then machines started failing - badly! I always use the treadmill. All of a sudden 2/3 of all the treadmills were out of order and the 4 or 5 that worked were in use. The price in 2010 for new membership has gone up 60% than what we paid 2 years ago, and this AFTER THEY CLOSED DOWN OUR GYM FOR 3 MONTHS WITHOUT TELLING US FIRST!!!!!! That was the last straw. How can a company not tell you that they will close down for such a long time!! we ALL thought it would be about a week or so and were utterly SHOCKED when it kept going. There was a second option - another gym about 12 min away. But to do that to so many people who had a routine... was horrible. To not apologize... horrible. To act as though nothing bad was done because now the gym has a new coat of paint and floor polish... pathetic. And the prices are now so much more! For 1 person (2 year contract) it is $30 a month, and for 2 people it is ~$57 a month. Plus even though we are members we have to pay a service fee to renew! We are looking for other options as this point because the company is truly not a Carrboro, town-friendly company with good intentions. I say Carrboro needs to kick it out and let well-minded people start up something new. more

Do not go here for any reason 5/18/2010

One star is to many for this place. Read the other reviews, there is nothing good to say about this place. The staff can be downright aggressive at times, and never helpful. They start out to get you to sign up by saying everyone gets a personal trainer, they are fixing up the place, etc. The truth is no one has ever asked me about help training, I have been there a year and nothing has been repaired. Yesterday, May 17,2010, was raining out and the roof was leaking so bad they had to have multiple buckets catching water from the ceiling. The men's locker room smells like a septic system that someone has overflowed, there is no tile on the floor, just dirty concrete. You could get cleaner by showering in a medical waste bucket than the showers here. There has been a leaking faucet on the left sink for a least 1 month. I don't mean a drip, but a steady flow. Also the equipment is always in a state of disrepair, yesterday of the 15 tread mills, 7 had out of order signs on them. On top of it all they have a charge of $29.00 a year due in January for improvements. I don't know how many members they have but there are going to need 10,000 member at $29.00 apiece just to fix that roof. The pigeon feces alone will take quit some time to remove. So in closing only sign up here if you like to workout in a bacterial quagmire, on broken equipment, with rude shady managers, no trainers, and water pouring through the roof. Pros: Nothing Cons: Broken equipment, surly stage, holes in roof more

Worst Gym Ever 3/11/2010

This is the absolute worst gym I have ever been a member of in my entire life. The entire thing is a giant scam, but they don't care because of the very lopsided wording in the contracts, which renders you hopelessly locked into them. This is true of both the gym meberships and the personal training company operating there. As soon as you enter the door, they want to get you locked into a membership for two years, and then the trainer guy in the back office tries to lock you into a year of training on top of that. The price for all of it actually seems incredibly low, which should be your first warning sign that something isn't right. The reality is that half of those machines you see on the cardio deck don't work, and the ones that do have unreliable controls and features. The trainers are all awful, and the turnover is incredible so you will get bounced from trainer to trainer, without any control over who you work with. Other than that the place is filthy, has a sewer odor in the locker rooms, almost all the cables on the pulley machines are frayed, and their stability balls have needed to be reinflated for months. Why Carrboro keeps supporting this gym I'll never know, they don't do a thing for us. Cons: everything more

Worst Decision I made this year 2/28/2010

I feel like I was scammed into this membership. I was told it was a free trial then found out I had to pay and was stuck for two years. I went back 30 minutes later after reading the fine print and they would not talk to me. Said I had to call an 800 number or talk to the manager at the Carboro location. I can't believe they went from so nice to so rude in 30 minutes. What a bad decision. I went over to the other Carolina Fitness in Carboro and was shocked at what a dump it was. Very dirty. Almost all the cadio was broken. With the same management at this new facility I'm sure it will be the same dump as the one in Carboro in less then two years. And I'll be stuck there! Don't make the same mistake I did! more

I was tricked 8/29/2009

Please be careful. I'm *also* one of those people stuck in a two month membership which is automatically debited to my account. Pros: Gym is affordable Cons: Scammers. Trick you. Cannot cancel membership more
