When I was there I had bruised ribs, courtesy of the fine officers of the Carlton Sheriffs Dept. The nurse was unhelpful to the point of being rude, not only to me but to another of my family members who has a broken hip and could get no relief, not even en extra pillow to lay on. The food was nasty. The guards, most of them, even nastier. I am a very small person naturally and while there i lost 12 pounds and couldn't even get a special diet. They have nothing in the ""rec"" area, it's just an open room to walk circles in, and when I was there we only made it to the canteen one time in 5 days and the vending machine was completely empty. The building is old and outdated and really they should build a new jail. I know jail is not intended to be a good experience however the conditions in there are on the verge of inhumane. They have no treatment program or any help for people who come in with addictions and are sick and having withdrawals like some bigger jails do. They refuse to disburse doctor prescribed medication for pain if it is narcotic, even though they would be the ones holding on to it and giving it out. This is not right. Some people who go to jail do have serious chronic pain issues and a majority of the people going in are in pain due to the beating they took when they got arrested. I think the state needs to do something about this jail. Update it, rebuild it and train the guards and nurses how to handle these different situations.
Pros: there were one or two guards who didn't treat us like scum
Cons: The nurses are completely unhelpful, the food is nasty
