Editorial review from Citysearch 9/8/2014

Don't rent here..period....sure, I could tell you a story about rotten business practices, shoody construction and mismanagement....but it has all been said here before...and i was too trusting to heed the warning of the other tenants.....in a word..RUN. There are plenty ofbetter options in Indy, even along the canal.......learn from our mistakes........rent elsewhere more

Used to be a comfortable place to live 9/2/2008

My comment complaint about Canal Overlook Apts in Indy is not about the management nor the construction nor is it about maintenance. It's about new NOISY and INCONSIDERATE neighbors who moved into the unit adjacent to my apartment here. I have never had any noise problems with neighbors in the past. An elderly lady, I think, lives on one side and I don't hear a peep from her unit. The other unit used to have college students who were only studying ESL for a year, so they were not boisterous with their music and speakers. Just about a month and a half ago, some two or more like four students moved into the room next to mine, and they are so damn annoying with their loud music. It's not the music that I can hear, it's the base *boom boom boom* that really annoys the sh_t out of me!! I even had to pound on my wall several times to make them shut their music off at 1AM. I can't believe how thin the walls are in this apartment. I also can't believe the kind of people who come to live here at Canal Overlook. I already complained to the manager's office 3 x's!!! This is ridiculous! Just be careful that IUPUI undergrad students live in this apartment, and they can be a HUGE DETRIMENT to your sleep schedule if you are unlucky to have one of them live next to you, esp the ones with boom boxes and idiots who live off of annoying base music. Pros: good downtown location Cons: I hate the damn neighbors!! So $*%#*$& noisy!!! more

A memo from a fellow neighbor 8/7/2008

This is a memo typed up by a fellow resident of Canal overlook Apartment. I received it yesterday outside my door. This is what it said.\r \r --------------------\r \r I am writing to you to let you know that on the night of Monday August 4, 2008, someone broke into my apartment. I awoke to find someone standing in my bedroom with a flashlight shining on me. When he realized he had been seen, he said a few words to explain his presence, and then fled.\r \r At least one other apartment and the leasing office were also broken into. Apparently, the perpetrator has a master key because, to my knowledge, there have been no signs of forced entry. This person, and presumably, the key he used, is still on the loose.\r \r When the upper management here at Canal Overlook was asked to change the locks on my apartment so the perpetrator could not enter my apartment again, the response was that they would rather break the lease than change the locks.\r \r Additionally, the police told us they will not be interested in the situation ""until someone is r@ped or murdered."" I would rather not wait until then.\r \r -----------\r \r Whoa! This is scary! I sure don't want a stranger come into my apartment and take my belongings.\r \r Nor would I want a psychopath k_ll me while I'm asleep. Pros: (same as I've listed in my previous blog) Cons: (same as I've listd in my previous blog) more

Canal Overlook Great apartment near canal / but shocking incident 8/7/2008

(continue)\r \r Despite that notice, I have lived here at Canal Overlook Apts for almost 2 years. Not too long, but long enough to not have any serious incident happen to me.\r \r Overall, I like living here.\r \r I really like the indoor parking garage that offers protection to my vehicle. Compare the enclosed garage to the outdoor garages of apartments nearby . Worse, some people have to park on the streets. Sometimes, people do break into cars and steal your stereo, or other valuables.\r \r The maintenance people also ""try"" their best to get their work done in a timely fashion. I remember having a leak problem with my sink. So the maintenance guy installed a new sink for me.\r \r I don't like the public laundry room. The price went up, and to wash AND dry clothes, it' costs $1.50 each.\r \r I like the fact that this apartment is near the canal. I like jogging along the canal during teh spring and summer time to exercise.\r \r What I dislike about this apartment is the loud and noisy people who walk along the canal at night. They like to sing loud, scream, chase each other and giggle loudly. Ah, so annoying. I even had to call the police once to get these kids to shut up, screaming at 3AM on a weeknight.\r \r I also don't like the thin-crust ceilings. You can always hear the people above you walking or in my case, stomping. ""coonk coonk coonk."" So $*(%%# annoying! Oh well, I already told the office about this problem, and the peeps above try their best to not stomp, but it's hard to contain the noise when the floor creaks.\r \r PS: I'm a tenant of this apartment. I'm not management office (otherwise I wouldn't have posted that notice to warn potential tenants), nor am I that concerned neighbor, because I wouldn't have posted some positives about living in this apartment complex.\r Pros: clean apartment, well painted, nice fitness room, new laundry machines, indoor parking garage Cons: noisy people along the canal, thin-crust ceiling (hear neighhors above stomping), expensive rent, old refrigerator, office personnels constantly changing more

Worst Place I Have Ever Lived 4/20/2007

The Owner of the Canal Overlook has charged us for a premium we never agreed to pay. This premium is not included anywhere in the signed lease. Although we disputed the charge both verbally and in written form, he told my husband and I that he would take the money from our Renter's Garauntee/Deposit. He did not tell us that he was making these withdrawals until we inquired about it some months after the initial dispute. He has never returned our call and refuses to talk to us directly, everything is relayed through the Assistant Manager. When my husband moved in, the staff at the Canal Overlook told him they would return the Renter's Guarauntee no later than the day he moved out. We have been out for some twenty days and have not yet received these monies. Many International Interns rent from Paragon Properties: Canal Overlook, and they are constantly taken advantage of. On our move out day, the woman in the office told my husband that they don't pay her enough there, so he should throw her some money. Upon reporting this to management, no one seemed too apologetic. \r During the winter, the walkways were completely iced over. A fellow renter got stuck in the elevator for an hour. This elevator was out of service for about a month. I was never notified of a package delivered to me there, it sat in the leasing office for over 4 months before I finally figured out it had been there the whole time. The decor is from the late eighties, early nineties at best. The exercise room is a complete joke, and I think something may have died in the ventilation system because it always smelled horrible. Please trust that this is not the first time I've complained of these shortcomings of a so- called ""luxury apartment"" but my concerns were never of much concern to the staff of the Canal Overlook. Pros: It is located near the canal. Cons: The staff charge us for a premium without authorization. more
