Happy Hour: Mon-Wed 5pm-10pm and Thur-Sat 5pm-7pm.

I took a friend here for her birthday and we were disappointed. It's a VERY cool atmosphere, but that's about it. Service is mediocre and food is terrible. We ordered a bunch o...

ALLWAYS GREAT 4/19/2006

I'VE NEVER HAD A BAD MEAL HERE. I'VE BEEN GOING HERE SINCE IT OPEN. AND ITS ALWAYS BEEN EXCELLENT. CROWDS IS GOOD. HAPPY HOUR GETS ME THESES DAYS. I JUST LOVE IT ITS A N EXCELLENT BARGIN. YOU MUST GO TO SUSHI HAPPY HOUR AND ENJOY. Pros: VALUE, PEOPLE, FOOD more

Canal Club Rocks! 3/21/2006

The best thing is the wood-fire grilled salmon with a Thai cocont curry sauce, grilled spicy radicchio, and something they call ""forbidden rice"" it tasted like a soft wild rice and it's purple. I didn't ask why. It was delicious. There were, like 5 different flavors going on, and you could taste them all at once. The sushi was very fresh and they have 5 or 6 sakis. Joplin the DJ played some killer tunes, but she didn't start until we were having dessert. The backlit marble walls and the gondola were really cool. Mellow crowd at the bar. Great place. Pros: That salmon thing!, Joplin the DJ, Cool Room Cons: DJ only on weekends, only 2 bars :(, not open for lunch more

Lots of time to stare at each other 2/15/2006

Our waiter passed our table several times without acknowledgement. When we were served our drinks, long minutes passed until the drinks were emptied and we were staring at the ceiling and at diners who arrived after us who were diving into their meals. Our waiter returned to take our order. We selected a set sushi platter (one of only two sushi choices- no ala carte on V-day) and a halibut in banana leaf entree. He cleared away our empty drink glasses and failed to take a second drink order. The halibut arrived. About halfway through the hot entree, the waiter found my sushi order. He brought the platter to me, then realized that I was lacking a dish, a bottle of soy and some chopsticks. I was also lacking the dab of wasabi and pickled ginger. We were not offered dessert or coffee at the end of the meal. Pros: mid-price, clever drinks, fun atmosphere Cons: amateur service more

My favorite laid-back cool restaurant 10/10/2005

It seems like in LA restaurants you have a choice -- hip and energetic means pricey and uptight, relaxed and inexpensive means no ambience and lame crowd. Canal Club is the perfect mix of fun, lively atmosphere with laid-back comfort and good food. I personally love their sushi, plus the garlic string beans alone are worth going for. They seat quickly, it's great for Happy Hour and big group dinners. One of the best! Pros: cool looking, great veggie rolls, fun place to be Cons: servers are slow, martinis tad pricey more

Absolutely NOT for sushi 9/10/2005

I do like the Canal Club, just don't ever get the sushi. I unfortunately forgot how bad the sushi was the 1st time I went and wound up ordering it again recently. Bad idea. Try their other food, like the baby greens salad, but stay away from the sushi. more

don't go for sushi 3/13/2005

We had sushi here for the first time last week. Let's just say this is far from the best sushi in the area. The basics California Rolls were ok. I like eel. It was not very good here. It was almost cold, not even warm. Eel is served hot! more

Good but slightly expensive 4/19/2004

The ambience and service was great. The attitude of the place was very ""hang loose"" which was very appropriate for its location. The food was a little on the pricy side, but you cant go wrong with the appetizers (especially on happy hour prices) more

Sushi and chocolate 4/1/2004

Canal Club is a great place to have some drinks after work..try the mojito. The menu has a variety of different appetizers..the sushi is very good here, especially the albacore and the crunchy sushi (with tempura in it!)..and if you love chocolate this is the place for you..end your meal by ordering the Volcano cake or the choc fondue with strawberries or have the waiter get you a chocolate mousse from across-the-street James'Beach. Pros: great ambience, interesting decor, best sushi & desserts more

great place to go and drink, but... 1/20/2004

the ambiance, service and drinks were all great. we got seated right away got our order taken and delivered right away. but DO NOT order the sushi. its a step below supermarket sushi we were very surprised when we got our bill and were charged $20 for a single order of sashimi which was thickly cut (doesn't that defeat the point of sashimi?) and just placed on a plate. Very boring for being so way over priced! more

Great food at great prices! 12/28/2003

BLAH service though. I really don't care for the wait staff at this restaurant, but I really LOVE their happy hour. 1/2 priced appetizers like brie and grape quesadillas which are DELICIOUS!!! Their sushi is yummy and pretty much everything else on their happy hour menu like potstickers... :) It's also a great place for group outings because they have a back room which you can rent out. Fun atmosphere... brought to you by the same guys who run James Beach. Although the service REALLY sucks, I like the ambience and the food at the prices they have! :) Pros: GREAT happy hour, great prices Cons: parking is kinda hard, service SUCKS more

Super Sushi 4/28/2003

This is the best Happy Hour Sushi bar I have ever been to! The brie-and-grape quesadillas are awesome and the sushi is to-die-for. Their mojitos are great, too! If you're looking for something cheap and easy, come during Happy Hour and you will most definitely get your money's worth. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a sushi lover! Pros: Awesome food, excellent price, good service Cons: hard to find parking more

Eclectic but good 3/4/2003

Start off with an excellent margarita and the eclectic menu won't seem so strange. The sushi is decent, but the Mexican-inspired dishes are the best. The bar gets crowded on weekends, but the back room is usually pretty quiet. Pros: margaritas, ambiance Cons: odd food combinations, "okay" sushi more

Fabulous! 2/13/2003

The service, food and ambience is fabulous. A great little spot with great djs and delicious fusion dishes. Have lived in LA for two years and tried nearly every 'recommended' restaurant in town and this is by far, one of my favourites. Am heading home in 3 weeks and will be sure to make my last LA meal at the Canal Club! Pros: lighting, music, food more

Trendy Sushi in Venice 1/13/2003

Went to Canal Club at 9:00pm on Friday night. I was seated right away at the sushi bar (2 people), no wait! The service was fast, great sushi, nice ambiance. They had a great DJ !!!!! This is a real fun place for sushi Pros: Inexpensive, great music Cons: Cost of Parking, Crowded more

A Venice Must 12/13/2002

Sushi Super-chef Nick takes care of the eats while the locals provide the atmosphere. Always a great time. If the rare ""off-night"" rears its ugly head, then just head across the street to James Beach. A can't miss 1-2 punch. Pros: Inexpensive, Never over-crowded, Great staff more

A Place to Mingle 9/9/2002

The setup is perfect with a little bar to meet many good looking singles or booths for that impressive date night. The place has it all from food to the walk to the beach. A perfect spot that must be experienced. Pros: Singles Scene, Great Atmosphere more

Ask for Chef Nick 8/13/2002

Great place for drinks and sushi. The fish is fresh and the service great. Be sure to ask for chef Nick he will tell you what is in season. It is pricey but worth it. It is a locals hangout in Venice. Great people watching. more
