Cozy....... 2/14/2008

First of all, really think about going there on a Friday night. Very busy to the point of being overlooked even with a reservation. Yes, we checked in and waited as later arrivals got their seats before us. I guess a party or two isn't enough for their liking. We finally were seated in the bar. The booth was large enough for six (plenty of legroom). We ordered and received our appetizer rather quickly and it was delicious. We ordered two main dishes (ravioli and tortelinni). The ravioli was a bit of a wait and was warm only in the center. The tortelinni came so late we had finished the ravioli at least ten minutes before. The waitress told us since it was served so late,we would not be billed for it. Guess what? we were billed anyway for a dish that had sat under the heat lamp long enough to make the edges hard. When my wife mentioned to me rather loudly that we had been billed for it, the waitress disppeared into the crowded bar The bar had fill up to the point we had a bunch of people standing right by our table waiting for us to leave. We will never go there again. It sure wasn't worth seventy bucks!!!!!! Hope your experiences fare better Pros: Italian atmosphere bigtime ! Cons: Poor parking, mediocre food, expensive for what you get more

Highway Robbery! 1/31/2008

very hard location to find. parking limited. atmosphere and resturant decor was great. family style. took family of two adults and three kids to meet two other couples for dinner. ordered the "larges" of each course selection under the waitress' instructions for us. extremely small portions when a "large" is supposed to feed four to six people. fed the children, the husband got about appetizer portion of food, and i had whatever the kids didn't eat. the food was alright, but it was nothing to write home about. the service was good until we got the bill and ask the waitress to split it. she became very difficult to work with and she refused to split the bill up for us. then we found charges on the bill for food that we never received and had never ordered. spent a long time working with the waitress trying to get her to understand that she needed to take the charges off. we finally got the bill straightened out. our bill came to just over $150.00 for our family. we about had a coronary right then and there! charging that much money for the mediocre food we got is seriously highway robbery! especially when we had to stop at mcdonalds on the way home because everyone in the family was starving. we will definitely never go back there again nor will we ever recommend this place to anyone. we would have been so much better off by going to red lobster, ordering everyone lobster, and saving some of our hard earned money to boot!!!. this overall experience was horrendous! Pros: atomsphere, decor Cons: value, food, portions more

Best Food and service St Paul! 8/2/2007

I went there went my CEO and he loved it! Our company let them handle all are cattering needs and let me tell you its a lot! And now they have single portions of food! Perfect! Pros: They went to smaler size for single people YES! Cons: Not enough of them around! more

Average food and portions for an above average price. 2/21/2007

My experience with Buca's is limited to the St. Paul location. The best thing this place has going for it is the service. Our waiter was very attentive and took care of our every need promptly. We also got in very quickly without a reservation (5pm on a weeknight.) We did not find it any louder or more boisterous than your average family restaurant. As others have noted, it's a "family style" service, which means that the "small" servings are meant to feed 2-3 people and the "large" servings are meant to feed 4-6 people. It's brought out on platters and bowls, and you dish up your own serving. If your party doesn't agree to eat the same things, you're going to get WAY too much food. There were three in our party and we ordered one small Bruschetta (good, fresh), one small Chicken Marsala (average), one small Tortelloni (gritty, doughy texture), one small Garlic Mashed Potatoes (average), and one small Chocolate Cake (very good). We learned that the small Chicken Marsala (that was supposed to be enough to feed 2-3 people) comes with only two pieces of chicken breast. For an additional fee, we were able to upgrade to an extra piece of chicken. If you're in a party of three people, I suggest that you make at least one of your selections a "large" to insure that you get enough, and be sure to ask about the size of that entree. The portions bordered on inadequate. The food was good, but not exceptional. The tab, however, was exceptionally large in relation to the quantity and quality. I would have expected one or both to have been better, for the price. My opinion is that you can do better at The Olive Garden, and your party will get more variety. The only reason to go to Buca's is if you find the ambience and "family" experience to be worth the additional price. Pros: Great service with friendly wait staff. Cons: Smallish portions of average Italian fare at a high price. more

Special 5/18/2006

Fun and lots of energy, food is great and you just get a warm fuzzy feeling, of course that might have been all the wine I drank. Pros: Food, Decor, Service Cons: Parking more

Good Stuff 1/25/2005

Buca is always good. Ive been to 3 in the twin cities and St. Paul's is nice. Mlps is the best one however. Food has always been good. Great decor. Its usually packed and loud so keep that in mind if looking for something else Pros: food, decor more

Got Garlic? 8/26/2003

Buca's is a garlic-lovers paradise. And by garlic, I mean whole cloves on the garlic cheese bread. Whole cloves in the pasta. WAY TOO MUCH. Atmosphere is family style with the menu on the wall. Everything is served in family-size portions. Lose all the garlic, and I would return. Until then... Pros: fun atmosphere, unique decor Cons: crowded parking, Over-use of garlic more

Missing the point 3/9/2003

For anyone that thinks they are going to get an extraordinary gourmet Italian meal, of course they will be disappointed. That's not what Buca is. It's Southern IMMIGRANT Italian cuisine. Made from what these people could afford and/or find upon arrival to the states. Is it bland? Sometimes, yes, but rarely. But then again, immigrants had...tomatoes, and garlic. This is coming from someone whose close friends grew up like this. That's how it was, and Buca does an EXCELLENT job of replicating Frank Sinatra's parents' living room on the walls. As for the ambiance, it's SUPPOSED to be loud. These families were big and it was crowded and there was alot of food. Do your homework, please. Pros: great food, fun servers, inexpensive Cons: may have to wait more

Buca = Chef Boyardee 2/21/2003

The food is so totally overrated! It tastes like it's fresh out of the can! The ambience is fun and the servers are great, but they don't make up for the bland, bland food. Much better places around town than this mega-chain. Pros: Ambience Cons: Bland food, Long waits, Mega-chain more

Succulence with a smile! 2/3/2003

From the moment you walk in, you know you are in for a great experience. Your eyes are treated to Buca's traditional Italian ecclectic decor. As your waitress escorts you to your table, you can't help but stop at the many different and often surprising pictures and statues. The food is superior to all other Itailian restaurants. Your taste buds will be delighted. The authentic ingredients and culinary masterpieces make you ask, "Am I in Italy?" Despite the lack of parking, my experience was truly remarkable. Pros: Great Value, Great food, Great atmosphere Cons: Poor parking (lack of, Distracted service, Loud more

Bucas-Worth the drive!! 12/13/2002

My name is Derrick and I am from Sartell, MN. We went to Bucas during the State Swimming and Diving meet last year. The food was phenominal, the atmosphere was unbelievable and the people were great. For prom, a bunch of seniors drove two hours just to eat here. All around a great family and friends resturaunt! Pros: Inexpensive, Get what you pay for, Great service Cons: Long wait for food more

Very Overrated 12/11/2002

Way too much food of mediocre quality. For those who know very little about good Italian food. Bucas are also typically noisy and sometimes on the rowdy side. more

How can anyone not love Buca? 11/3/2002

Buca's is the feel-good restaurant of St. Paul. Walls covered with kitschy memorabilia (have you SEEN that picture of Sophia Loren in the St. Paul location?), old Italian favorites crooning over the stereo system, and a fun, festive atmosphere make this a memorable dining experience. Large portions that serve two or more are Buca's hallmark. A classic Caesar was our choice to start, followed by a beautifully-dressed bruschetta and their trademark ravioli. A hearty marinara left me relieved that at least one restaurant in the city won't serve those runny, tasteless tomato sauces that plague most other Italian restaurants! The full bar makes this a great place for after-work get-togethers, and the staff will work with you on preparing a three-course menu for your family party needs as well. Also a great ice-breaker for first dates! It's tough to beat this energetic combination of great food and a fun-loving atmosphere. Pros: Lively, fun, Great food, 2 locations Cons: Can be a wait more

Good (& Loud) 10/16/2002

The food is really quite good. The place is loud. Great for a work function or large family gathering. Sometimes the ordering process, family style, can get confusing and time consuming. Overall, a good place to gather. Some sound control would improve the ease of conversation. more

Overpriced 9/28/2002

The food was acceptable, but I can do as well at a local pizza joint for much less money. And the family-style portions get in the way of sensible ordering, because all prices are essentially twice what they should be. I ordered a salad, entree, and glass of wine, all of which I split with my wife, and the bill was 56 dollars. The service is eccentric with a lot of rule-reciting. I think there are better choices.... Cons: expensive, lots of "rules", mediocre food more

buca's 9/21/2002

Great food, but often crowded with long seating wait time even with reservations. Atmosphere is often noisy and not conducive to intimate conversations or really any conversation. Somewhat limited menu but GREAT daily specials. Pros: good food, great italian decor Cons: limited parking, often crowded, noisy family atmosphe more

do you like to wait? 9/10/2002

I went here for prom with reservations at 5:00. I didn't even get seated until 6:30. You can imagine that didn't go over well with the ladies, conidering we had to wait outside in tuxes and promdresses. So the service sucked, but the food was actually good. If you don't mind waiting 3 hours for your food, go here. more

Surprise!! 8/20/2002

8/14/02 flew in frm NYC, 2 celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. She was so delighted with the atmosphere,(cozy table in private room, just 4 the 2 of us, perfectly decorated 4 her bday) The staff was most attentive & catered to our every need. After a terrific meal, we had 2 take our favorite dessert 2 go 'chocolate cake'...well there is only 1 way to eat Buca's chocolate cake : )) Pros: attentive, cozy more

  • In Short
Homesick for your mother's Italian cooking? Grab your appetite and head to this restaurant, where the friendly wait staff will serve up portions of Colosseum-esque proportions, like spaghetti and meatballs loaded with savory tomato sauce and lots of pungent garlic. Dishes center on Southern Italian immigrant fare, and are meant to be shared family-style with a large goblet of wine-to enhance the taste, of course. The ornate décor with walls covered in vintage photos evokes a warm homey feel that welcomes customers to dine among the other families and loyal customers. Buon Appetito!
