good ol' Brooklyn Tech 4/12/2006

What can I say about this place except that I'm so glad I'm out? Just kidding, I think. Brooklyn Tech is considered one of the best New York City public schools, along with Stuy and Bronx Science. I didn't study nor did I finish my entrance exam (I had a good 5 pages left at the end of the test because 1. I am slow and 2. that test bored me to tears), so I don't think admittance into Brooklyn Tech is that big a deal. There are many other non-specialized high schools with equal or maybe even superior education (i.e., Midwood). I don't think I learned anything from my years at Tech besides the fact that I am horrible at cheating, and know absolutely nothing about telnets, pings, C++. As another poster had written, Mr. Hoftyzer was definitely one of my favorite teachers; however, that hasn't changed my opinion on chemistry, which I still hate. more

Brooklyn Technical High School 8/4/2005

Overall it's a good school in regards to education. But, it's a very competitive school and can put a lot of pressure on perfectionist students. There is not a lot of support either. You pretty much are left to take it all in yourself and handle the problems alone. Everyone is trying to get the highest scores, which meant a lot of cheating went on. There was also a big problem with theft in the school. You can't leave your bags unattended and have to watch where you put your wallets (otherwise they may mysteriously disappear). While some classes were productive, others were not. A lot of other high school students, as they get to Junior and Senior year, their workload decreases and they can get out of school earlier. This is not the case with Brooklyn Tech. I found myself with a 1-9 schedule up until my senior year (because of AP courses and non-essential classes--like Technology and Gym!!) Tech makes its students choose majors at the end of their sophomore year, which had it's pros and cons. The good thing was that I learned that I didn't want to ever major in Computer Science again. But the major classes also weren't serious. There was a lot of slacking off, especially in Computer Science and I know that it was the same in many other majors as well. There are many things wrong that need to be fixed at this school. Also, the faculty wasn't that great. I can't remember one teacher that really influenced me in this school. Well, maybe one: Mr. Hoftyzer--a chemistry teacher. He was very enthusiastic and I grew to love the subject because of him. more
