only good food there is chicken fried steak. Didn't like anything there really. more

Awful... the cheese broccoli soup was 3/24/2012

Awful... the cheese broccoli soup was chunky, tasted odd and made for a lot of burping and gas. This happened not only to me but to my husband and two teenage daughters. The waiter was flippant and when asked to provide a clean soup spoon, took the spoon fogged it up with his mouth, wiped it on his shirt and handed it back in some kind of stupid playful way... he then laughed and said he'd go and get a new one. The restaurant was dirty as well. more

Avoid Broadway Location 8/16/2011

This location is a disaster and I have given up trying to be a customer here. It's dirty, they've gotten stingy with the bread, and the staff is untrained and uncaring with zero leadership from a GM (is there one?). It's disappointing too because I've eaten hundreds of times at BEP in TX and CO and only had bad experiences at this location. If you are eating in Englewood either drive to Colorado blvd or give your money to another restaurant that appreciates it and is willing to earn it. more

many locations don't exist any more 4/23/2011

The head office is lax in updating the locations. Someone is not doing their job and are getting paid for it. Call before you go if you have the time for multiple attempts. I like the food if I can find a restaurant! more

Just not all that 10/1/2010

In Denver on business, actually my third trip this month. I always like to try the local fare and stay away from the chains, (Chili's, Olive Garden). I was searching for something different and came across the Black Eyed Pea which boasted real down home cookin'. \r \r The Good: The staff was really great, from the hostess to the waitress to the manager who was working the floor and checking in at every table. Real genuine southern hospitality, made you feel very welcome without being over bearing. \r \r The Bad: The Food. It was well, boring. It was just a hair about Hometown Buffet, I mean, really bad imitation southern food. I ordered meatloaf, mac & cheese, green beans, a salad and peach cobbler. \r \r The salad dressing, bleu cheese, had no taste at all. It looked like bleu cheese, chunks and all, but no flavor whatsoever. Like pouring milk on your salad. The salad itself was very small, not much lettuce, good thing because it was wilted. \r \r The meatloaf was just OK, not great, not bad, certainly not home made, and the brown gravy was oversalted. The mac & cheese was the biggest disappointment. I've had 'southern style' mac and cheese and this was like eating something out of a box or a frozen dinner. Again, the cheese sauce had no flavor at all. \r \r The green beans were good, though they had sat in the steamer all day. \r \r The peach cobbler was more cobbler than peaches, very little fruit and a lot of cake, with a tiny scoop of ice cream on top. \r \r All in all, I say stay away. \r more

Worst Hostesses on Earth 10/12/2009

My daughter and I went to the location on 104th on Friday, 10/09/09. I went in ahead of her to put our name in and was ignored while two hostesses complained about a party they needed to seat, but had been overlooked. They continued to go on about this and how they had no table and were trying to figure out who to blame. Finally a young man came up and asked me if I had been helped, to which I replied ""no"". Ironic? Probably not, just poor service. I am happy to report that once we got past the front, the rest was amazing. Really good food and service. Adam was phenomenal! Pros: Really good food, super huge portions. Cons: Horrific first impression. more

To Peal Haskins or Peal2Haskins: 6/9/2008

To Peal Haskins or Peal2Haskins:\r \r My name is Desiree I answer the phones at the Blackeyed Pea. I answer 50- 100 phone calls in two hours between 6-8pm. I am betting your friend worked for a less busy location. We are the number one store in Colorado, and the busiest. I have two lines 15 tables and I am also the bartender. I do the work of three people. I work for 4-10pm with no break, and If you held it was because there where probably 3-5 people that were in head of you. It is impossible for me to take two orders at the same time, and I always take orders in a first come first serve basses. You may not want to blast the restaurant, but calling me lazy is just plan rude I?m sorry you can?t be more patient, and wait your turn. I work 40 hours a week I make 4.50 an hour. I also go to collage full-time, and I have never once asked someone to hold just because. I do 700 plus dollars in sales every night, so you should maybe try to realize that at any restaurant you will have to hold during there rush that is why they call it a rush, unless they have a Togo section Blackeyeyd pea dose not. I am the only person who dose all three things. Your friend does not know what they are talking about, and I work really hard and I am very offended. more

Call in for ""Carry out"" service means automatic HOLD! 2/26/2008

I'm really not interested in blasting a restaurant needlessly as it appears some here did. We like the food, but the service....? Our complaint is for carry out at the Belleview / Broadway location. The lady that answers the phone is Desiree. If I call 52 times in a year (once a week), I'm put on hold 52 times. Sometimes long enough to hang up and call back. I asked a friend that used to manage a Black Eyed Pea about this practice and he said there would be no reason for it and ""it's just lazyness or a bad attitude"". It's really frustrating to know you'll automatically be put on hold. Once a guy answered and I said ""I want to place an order for pick up and yes I will hold"". Apparently I surprised him and he said ""you don't have to hold"". Pros: Good food Cons: Bad call-in practices more

Pathetic waste 10/26/2007

Bland food, portions cut down to near zero. A hamburger and onion rings consists of *4* rings 2"" diameter. No customer appreciation. Greedy. more

The worst example of ""southern"" cooking ever! 11/13/2006

I spent my whole life in the south, with a grandmother that showed me everything she did in the kitchen. So believe me when I tell you that the ONLY think Black Eyed Pea does in the kitchen is OPEN A CAN!!! The food is so bland, it is sacrilege to even include it in the soul food category here. And, hello, any self-respecting southern cook knows that cornbread is made from WHITE cornmeal. I understand that this is a chain, and that should be considered when reviewing. But the bottom line is, this is not southern, not soul, and not very good! more

The Black-eyed Pea is for me. 12/24/2002

My dog really likes the left-overs, and I cannot imagine there not being left-overs from the Black-eyed Pea. They give enormous portions. Actually, the kid portions are pretty big too. The food is very good, but if you are looking for a low fat meal, you ought to go somewhere else. They have a little bar in the resteraunt, but it is really just so you can have a drink with your meal if you chose to do so. I do not think that many people would go there just for drinks. I have never seen an intoxicated person in there. Deserts are excellent as is the food. The only thing they need to address is their ambience. It can get pretty loud in there. They need to put more sound catchers up. Pros: drinks, deserts, portions Cons: loud, wait, high fat more

pathetic 11/20/2002

its a pathetic state of affairs if people consider Black-Eyed Pea a top choice for takeout or for food of any kind - the Denver area does actually have some good restaurants but does suffer from an over abundance of chain eateries. Why do take out when even the most amateur chef can make far better food at home in 10 minutes than could ever be obtained at Black-Eyed Pea - Yuck! Cons: everything more

Great American Food 8/27/2002

Huge portions, a concept that ""cares"". Craveable food. The ""new decor"" is fantastic. more
