Small but very fine 8/16/2005

The Birmingham Museum of Art is small-to-mid-sized and it will not give you the kind of "wow" that MOMA or the Chicago Art Institute does. Birmingham is a small town. That said, they have respectable collections in a variety of areas: African art, Asian arts (including multiple ethnic traditions from Japan, China, Korea), European fine art, photography and often local Birmingham artists. The layout is sufficiently generous that you definitely can get engrossed in the exhibits. High quality travelling exhibits do make it to Birmingham, including (in 2004) European painting from the 17th and 16th century. Quality is high, layout is clean, and the Musuem is quite enjoyable. more

Nice museum for Alabama 8/13/2005

The Birmingham Museum of Art is a noteworthy museum for a city size of Birmingham. The art has several perminant exhibits including Asian art, African art, and a large collection of Wedgewood china. There are usually several rotating or touring art exhibits during the year. I do wish there was a larger collection of Southern art. The museum also started hosting an event called Art on the Rocks. The event is monthly during the summer months and brings national singer-songwriters to play at the museum. The event has free catered food that is suprisingly very good and a cash bar. Beware though, when it rains, the artists play inside the museum instead of outside, and the acoustics are horrible inside the museum. more
