Chilaquiles 7/6/2010

Open again with great food! 12/12/2009

The Big Star reopened in April with a new operator. I had ignored it until a friend told me he had the best breakfast ever...pork tamales with green chile sauce and two eggs on top. I had to try it. When I saw chilaquiles on the menu, I had to try them. Superb! Made fresh from scratch, they were the best I have ever eaten and I have spent a lot of time in Mexico searching. So how is it that a diner on Bainbridge has some of the best Mexican food I have ever eaten? The owner (very much an anglo) grew up in Mexico City and operated restaurants in San Miguel de Allende. In addition to 15-20 unique Mexican dishes, the large menu has all the traditional diner favorites. The owner can really cook, so I am sure they are just as tasty. Big Star is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The two items I mentioned are on the breakfast menu, but you can get them all day. Highly recommended! more

Big Star Diner -- CLOSED 11/24/2007

We have friends visiting this week and they wanted to go to Big Star Diner they heard and saw a review about on TV's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives". Today (11-24-07) we took the trip to Bainbridge Island from the Olympia area, and found a note taped to the door "CLOSED - Will re-open after first of the year (January 2008) under new name of "Ricky's". Don't know if same owners or was sold. Our loss, we missed a dining experience!! more

Big Star Diner 4/23/2006

Set in an older dining car, the atmosphere alone is worth checking out. It is just fun. The menu is reminiscent of the 50's and offers many comfort foods. Their chocolate shakes are too good to describe in words. :) Prices are high, but, that's Bainbridge. Remember that. Atmosphere is comforting, clean, and bright. more

The blue shiny diner... 3/21/2006

The Blue Star Diner is located just in front of the Kid's Museum so if you are planning on taking a trip to the museum you may want to add a stop afterward for lunch at the diner. The food is good, but expensive for what it is. The kids enjoyed the cheeseburger and fries and the macaroni and cheese is always a hit. They have great service and a fun (but small) atmosphere. more

Good food with atmosphere 2/4/2006

I have to admit, this diner reminds me of my youth when dinners were quite common. I do not remember the food being as good though as a at the Big Star. No greasy burgers and fries here! A good place to drop in when visiting Bainbridge Island. more

Big Star blast from the past 8/20/2005

Eating at the Big Star Diner was my first experience eating in a real diner. I loved it. Restored to its 1940s greatness, the Big Star was loads of character complimented by a surprisingly adventurous menu. Open only for breakfast and lunch, grab a booth with a window and enjoy with creative twists on diner food offered up by the open kitchen. The Big Star makes a great destination for a day trip visit from Seattle. more
