In Short
Built around a manmade forest lake nestled at a 7,000-foot altitude in the San Bernardino mountains, Big Bear Village is a playground for skiers, boaters, hikers, horseback riders, snow-shoers, golfers and fishermen--there's even a waterfront solar observatory. Accommodations range from modest campsites to Bavarian-themed bed-and-breakfasts; most in demand are secluded, knotty-pine cabins and lodges with private hot tubs and fireplaces. Along with countryside-inspired restaurants and bars, the main square is lined with ski outfitters, curio shops and clothing stores.
