slice of italy 8/27/2010

very nice place, sitting could be alittle more spread out. but the place is like a slice of italy in boston. very romantic place to bring someone on a date and the prices are not outrageous. more

Great service! Would go again! 7/16/2008

Went there last night, was a really good experience. There were no seats available on the patio so we sat inside. The temp was really comfortable- no goosebumps. There were only 2 other parties inside so we had the waitress' undivided attn. Food was great. Had the garlic potatoes, duck stuffed ravioli and crab and shrimp stuffed calamari. The calamari came in a broth that was to die for, we got seconds of the ravioli instead of dessert. Their wine menu only has Spanish wines so that was a nice twist. I will definitely go back. The service was great and food was good, ambience was appealing and the prices were decent. $7 - $10 a plate. Gave it 4 starts because , the tables are very small and too close together. Wouldn't want to be there on a busy night. Wine bottle and glasses were teetering on the table edges. Also legroom wasn't enough. I kept stepping on my date. And the tables weren't high enough for me to cross my legs- can be awkward. Glad the tables beside us were empty so I could stretch out underneath them. And I'm only 5'7"". Comm Ave is mostly permit parking, recommend garage around the corner on Newbury Street for $18. Pros: Service, Parking lot nearby, good food Cons: Small tables, not enough legroom more

The food, drink, and decor are great. The cucaracha, not so much. 6/23/2008

My friends and I decided to go to Barlola to hang out, have a light meal and some Sangria. We were seated right away in a lovely room that wasn't too dark nor was it too light. The noise level was conversational and the food was delicious. The portions are quite generous for tapas. I loved the patatas ali oli! Pros: Great food, large portions, reasonable prices Cons: an unexpected visitor of the creepy, crawly type more

Not bad.. Not bad.. 5/22/2008

Bar Lola was recommended to me by a friend of mine who lives in the area.. I went in with real high hopes and was a little disappointed.. Maybe, I should just lower my expectations. Pros: Food is not bad Cons: A little pricey more

I love tapas, just not here 2/20/2008

I can admit the decor is enticing, but the food itself is mediocre. I really want to love this place because I love tapas, and also Tapeo right up the street, so it would be great if I had another option just to mix things up a bit. I guess its a good thing that Tapeo is renovating its bar and updating its menu so I can have some change without sacrificing quality. Pros: Decor, ambience Cons: food quality more

Great tapas! 1/25/2008

I went with a group of 4, and had a fantastic time. Our server was very attentive and our food came out in shifts so we had time to eat everything. We went on a Friday night and it was not crowded, I am not sure why. The food was good, not amazing, but the atmosphere makes for fun group dining. Highly recommend! Pros: Great location, fun atmosphere, good authentic tapas Cons: Not much of a people watching crowd, but could be different in warmer weather more

Worst service I have ever had! 11/15/2007

I went to this restaurant with the hopes of being served food. We get there, the waitress was very rude, and after serving our food 10 years later, just disappeared. I had to hunt down another worker to get our bill. When we got the bill and gave the credit card, the waitress disappeared again. After 25 minutes of waiting, I got up again to go find her. Needless to say, she was not tipped well. Paella was good. Oh, and the Patatas Ali-Oli sounded a lot more ethnic than it was when we got it. Looked and tasted just like fried potato cubes. more

Great food, good portions, and no noisy crowds or long waits 11/8/2007

This place is great. My girlfriend and I went there last week and found the service to be perfect and the food to be delicious. The portions were larger than most tapas places and the garlicky shrimp, duckling, and payaya were incredible. My girlfriend enjoyed the duck confit ravioli as well. Also worth mentioning is the sangria, which was some of the best I've had. Surprisingly, the place was practically empty when we went for dinner during the middle of the week. Having waited for over an hour at tapeo, dahli, and other tapas places in the city, I couldn't believe that more people haven't discovered this place. The food is better and cheaper, the portions are larger, and the place is quiet and comfortable and you don't have to wait for a table. What's not to like about barlola? more

Great food and great service! 4/20/2007

This was my second dinner at BarLola. The food is wonderful and the service is terrific. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Pros: Food, drinks, service Cons: Lighting more

LOVE THIS PLACE 4/16/2007

I saw this place on the Phantom Gourmet and decided I had to try it out! Since then I've been here a few times and the food is always excellent. The servers have also been friendly each time I've been there. I've been taking my friends here when we are at a loss as to what to do for the night and they have loved it as well. I would pretty much recommend this place to anyone. Pros: Great food, great service, cute little location! Cons: Can't think of anything. more

Really Outstanding 12/9/2006

Wandered in with friends just for drinks. Looked over the menu. Ordered a couple of tapas. As a previous commenter said, ""Wow!"" Ordered some more. We all thought that this restaurant's food is superior, delicious, creative, reasonably priced. And the service was excellent, including suggestions as requested. No dissent in our group, whatsoever. In fact, I live close enough... (But NO connection with it.) Pros: The food, the food, the food! more

Move Over Dali... Best Tapas in Boston! 4/22/2006

The other reviews about this place are right on. It's excellent. Our waiter was friendly, knowlegeable, and helpful -- willing and able to explain each dish, as well as the whole ""tapas experience."" You order dishes in groups and they're served when they're ready from the kitchen. The selection of tapas are broad and varied. We ordered 7 dishes total for two people, we were STUFFED... Our waiter suggested we order 2 dishes each -- which is what we started with -- but we couldn't resist ordering a second round. Everything we had from the classic (such as the tortilla espanola) to the creative (the gambas rebozadas, fried ship with mango sauce) was outstanding. The selection of Spanish wines is good, though pricey ($9 for a glass of Rioja seems a bit steep). The food here beats Dali by a mile. Seriously. HIGHLY recommended. Pros: Great food, Great waitstaff, Fun experience Cons: Wines/drinks pricey more

WOW 4/17/2006

Heard about this place from a friend...from a friend. Great garden level location on Commonwealth right near Copley T. The atmosphere is warm (nice reddish glow). Highly recommend getting a pitched of the Sangria (yum!). The Tapas were well prepared and worth the reasonable pricing! Go here is a foursome, each person order 2 tapas and get a pitcher of sangria. You can all share the plates and it will only cost you about $20 per person (and you get good drink while sampling 8 different items on the menu). Pros: Atmosphere, Food, Location Cons: expensive martinis more

Worth Trying 2/28/2006

This place is definitley worth trying. Friends and I decided to go there a few nights ago and we had a blast. It was a fun night. The food was excellent. We received the best service here. There is a wide range of food to choose from the menu and the cocktails were fabulous. I recommend this place. It's definitely worth trying. Pros: Food, Cocktails, Service more

super! 2/17/2006

Barlola was a treat! great food, great service, great value! It's an unpretentious tapas bar with a good wine list, varied menu and reasonable tapa portions. we will be back! Pros: food, service, value more

Better than Spain! 2/10/2006

I had a great experience at Barlola. The food is delicious - the tortilla and potatas were my favorites. I was with a vegetarian friend and they offer plenty of veggie options - and were more than accomodating in changing dishes to meet her needs. The service was great, too. We were seated promptly and our waiter was very attentive, but did not rush us. Including a $30 bottle of wine, the total bill was $72 for two of us. We thought that was an amazing value for the quality of the food. Pros: Value, Food, Service more

Great Tapas at a Reasonable Price 1/5/2006

I've been to BarLola a couple times now and I have to say, I'm impressed. I've tried probably 50-60% of the menu items and they were all very good. I've never had a problem getting a table, the waitstaff is extremely attentive and knowledgeable and best of all are the prices. Each plate is $6-10 dollars and the wine list is very reasonable, meaning that with 5 people, 2 bottles of wine, 10 plates and 2 desserts, it worked out to only $35 per person. Definitely check it out. Pros: variety of dishes, reasonable wine list, attentive staff Cons: too few vegetables more
