It's December, It's good to be warm again! 12/23/2011

Here is true irony! Our old heat pump was working ok but not great. It was made in 1987. We had heard a radio ad for a complete new unit installed for $3999 from a well known HVAC company so we had the guy come out on Friday. His rough estimate bid was about $10,000 for a new unit installed. Thinking this was high, we said no for now. He offered to go on the roof to see how old the existing unit is to give an estimate of how much we could save on our electric bills. We said no thank you and he was gone. He was very nice. The very next day, our heater failed to work at all. Trying all the normal things first, I eventually determined that the compressor had locked up. I then remembered someone I had known in the past at Authority Heating and Air. I contacted Dave and told him about my problem. He was busy but listened patiently while I explained my concerns. He asked me to call him back the next morning after he had a chance to check on something. I called Dave the next day, he gave me a much better bid on a new package unit (that's what it is called) lol. I discussed it with my wife and then called Dave back to give him the go-ahead. He took care of everything else. It has been 4 days now and I am now comfortably sitting on my sofa nice and cozy writing up this review. He even made arraignments to have the old unit hauled away and gave me some tips on how to save money with my programmable thermostat. If you're cold or hot give Dave a call, he'll do a lot. LOL PS the unit we bought through Authority even qualifies for a great tax credit. It's a win-win. Thanks Dave. more

Watch out this guy will scam you 12/5/2011

This is just a WARNING to anyone here. Watch out for this guy, will take advantage of you and he does not give you a of list or quote of materials, he just gives you a quote to how much he thinks it will cost to fix it. Average rates for HVAC is under $100 per hour, but he basically charged my elderly mom over $350 an hour and refused to provide a breakdown of costs or parts. I called Dave who was recommended on Yelp to help my Mom on her house's AC. He seemed pretty trustworthy, he came out once to give an estimate of $800 to repair the unit. When he came back later to repair the unit, he found other things wrong and fixed a drain pan that had holes in it with tape and did a normal inspection/cleaning of the AC, saying we need to replace it in a year. After the job was done we received his bill, thinking he couldn't completely fix the AC and we were hoping it wasn't the full $800. To my dismay he he still wrote the bill for a little over $800 an hour for working only 2 hours and not providing a list of any materials he used. The only thing on the bill that resembled materials was "Chemical Cleaning". After a few emails back and forth he responded the price was what he quoted and he does not provide a breakdown of costs and then stopped emailing me about the subject accept to pay the bill. I feel he totally took advantage of my elderly mom and I would not recommend him to anyone. Reading up about contractors now every site says to request a bill of materials before the job is done and to check out what he charges you isn't ridiculously inflated more
