Augusta Canal Boat Tours

Yep we have a canal running through the city. Well, you kind of have to look for it because it doesn't run through the heart of the city. But the Augusta Canal is a lot of fun. There a bike trails, Petersburg boat tours, canoing and kayaking. You can even charter one of the Petersburg boats for a party. The canal was built in 1845 for power, water and transportation. During the Civil War and ammunitions plant was built along the canal and in later years several textile mills were built by the canal. The Civil War powder plant is still standing and is a beautiful building to see. King mill and Sibley mill are still there also. The canal is a great place for family activity whether its riding or walking the trails or canoing down the canal itself. There are year round activities going on at the canal. more

We all like the recent endeavors that have been undertaken by the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center. We actually enjoyed the boat tour of the canal from the downtown. The banks have been cleaned up and the scene is beautiful. They are heading to the right direction to re-vitalize the Augusta downtown and we definitely support it. more

Downtown Augusta has restored the Enterprise Mill into a center about the history of cotton in Augusta and the importance of the Augusta Canal. Petersburg Boat tours are offered here in conjunction with the Mill tour. The Canal runs from downtown Augusta north paralleling the Savannah River to the rapids in Columbia County. All in all it's a very nice overview of the history of the region and Augusta in particular. The Lock and Dam now offers a big covered picnic area with water, screened buildings and barbecue pits all located on the Canal. more
