The best and worse meals we ate during the week 12/19/2009

Went to Applewoods twice during our vacation week. The food was great the first time and absolutely horrible the second time. Their was 4 of us eating (all adults) and we each ordered something different. We all agreed that it was the worse meal we had the entire week and the worse meal that we had in the 20+ years we have been vacationing in Pigeon Forge. The great meal we had earlier in the week is not enough to keep us coming back. The manager had no explanation for the tasteless, old, food. Sorry Applewood, we won't be back! more

In Season BE PREPARED TO WAIT AT LEAST AN HOUR FOR A TABLE 10/2/2005

During the busy season, especially October be prepared to wait at least an hour for a table, sometimes longer, so if you have hungry kids, feed them before you come here. There are three dining rooms in the grill, in the main dining room there is a huge fireplace that make it very cozy when its chilly outside. This restaurant is popular for tour busses but usually all big parties are in the back dining room called the Back Forty. When you check in you give the hostess your name and how many in your party (it is quicker to seat 2-4 people than it is for 5 or more). Once seated you are given a complimentary drink (the size of a shot glass). It is called an apple juliep. It is orange juice, apple juice, pineapple juice and lemon juice. You are also given a basket of apple fritters sprinkled with powdered sugar and a container of apple butter to spread on your fritters. If they are hot and fresh out of the deep fat fryer they are totally awesome, once they are cooled they are just okay. They serve a full breakfast menu until 11:00 am, then they serve lunch. It is cheaper to come during lunch time (until 4 pm) the food is the same (except after 4 you cannot order sandwiches) it is just cheaper and you get smaller portions on some food. If you order the grilled chicken or trout or ribs it is the same size as dinner just cheaper. You are served soup as an appetizer (black bean, chicken noodle or vegetable), you do not get to choose between soup or salad unless you are willing to pay an upcharge. Breakfast and lunch is served with a biscuit, dinner is served with a dinner roll. They no longer serve cornbread unless you order a tourine of soup which comes with a small skillet of cornbread. Drinks are 1.85 regardless of what it is or what size it is, kids drinks are also 1.85 each. They do have a limited kids menu which is 4.99, drink not included nor is a toy but they do get a scoop of ice cream for dessert. They do not serve alcohol but you can go to the winery and buy a bottle of wine and drink it at the grill. Most of the servers have worked there for years as well as the cooks. It is a stressful work enviornment especially when it is the busy season so you may end up with a server who is totally overworked and underpaid but they are pretty professional. They also have a limited dessert option, (usually you are so full there is no room for dessert). There is an apple streusel cake, which is like an apple spice cake with ice cream, whipped cream and a cherry drizzled with hersheys chocolate syrup and sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon, banana cream pie (which they are usually out of ), chocolate cake, cherry and peach and sometimes blueberry cobbler, and chocolate or vanilla ice cream. A lot of their food is fried but they also have grilled items. The fried catfish is probably the best thing on the menu. Dinner prices begin around 14.99 on up to 19.99 per plate, lunch is under 10.00 as is breakfast. You do not get complimentary coffee after your meal like some restaurants do. You can wait outside on the front porch in the rocking chairs until they call your party, in the winter time the porch is heated with a big gas heater so you can rock in the winter time too. Worth going to at least once. more
