maybe it is greed 11/24/2007

I have had to constantly explain and re-explain to this vet that I want my dying CRF cat to go in peace in a setting where she feels safe and secure. No matter how many times I explain this, though, they are constnatly pushing me to do all kinds of things to my cat that I think my cat would find frightening. When I decline their suggested treatments (such as allowing them to put a needle in my cats back and giving me bags of fluid to drain into her), they treat me as if I am a bad and neglectful pet owner. I find them to be extremely pushy and judgmental of anyone who does not do exactly what they suggest --which is almost always extremely expensive and of questionable necessity. This all makes me feel that this vet could not care less about what my cat, and that they are just out to maximize their income. I am really upset that I have to deal with this constant pushiness and judgmental condescension at a time when I am greiving my cats impending death and simply trying to find ways to make her feel most comfortable, secure, safe and loved. If you are looking for a vet that is supportive of people who don't want their pets dying with all kinds of wires and tubes and whatever else in them, don't go here. Pros: near to my house Cons: extremely pushy and judgmental of my decision to let my cat die in peace, without all of their expensive life-prolonging (and frightening for my cat) treatments. more

worth every penny 9/7/2007

i've been going to animal kind for a little over a year now, ever since i moved to park slope. i have a 3 year old dog, 130lbs, relatively rare breed. prior to animal kind i went to very highly regarded (and very expensive) vets in both san francisco and los angeles. i'm one of those pet owners who doesn't let anything go to ""see if it gets better."" when we have a problem, we come to the doctor. as a result, my puppy has spent most of his life in excellent health. however he had skin problems starting at about six months that we were never able to completely eradicate.\r \r when i got to animal kind, dr. murphy was convinced it was a food allergy. i had done a food trial before (or so i thought) and every vet we'd seen since had eliminated that as a potential source. but after discussing options, we decided to give it another try. please note, she did NOT recommend the very expensive dermatologist workup instead -- she wanted to start with the trial.\r \r within three months my dog's skin was perfect. no rashes, no sores, no recurring infections. we've gradually switched him from the totally allergen-free food to a limited ingredient diet and he's never been better. after two years of trial and error, dr. murphy fixed my pup on the first attempt. \r \r do i have complaints? sure, minor ones. i often wait a long time for my appointments, especially on weekends. the cost of basic care is higher than i've encountered anywhere else. his prescription food isn't available for delivery (we go through big bags FAST) and occasionally takes a long time to come in stock. on the other hand, appointments are easy to get, they are open evenings and weekends and i've never seen a doctor i didn't like. best of all, i have confidence that my pet is getting the best possible care. for me, the trade off is MORE than fair. \r \r if you're on a tight budget or have a more low key approach to pet care, you may be better off somewhere else. but for us, animal kind is exactly right. more

Saved my dog's life-TWICE!!! 7/30/2007

My dog was big and shy but he never needed a muzzle at AnimalKind. We had been going to another vet in the Slope but they were not open 7 days a week, so, when my elderly German Shepherd was in real distress (after seeing our regular vet the day before who said "it was nothing") we were directed to AnimalKind. They were amazing and they saved my dog's life, TWICE. First time was that day when they X-rayed him and found he had swallowed a very absorbent sweatsock that they surgically removed. Was it expensive? You bet--that kind of technology and service are expensive and worth every cent. Our old vet was even more expensive and much less responsive plus they never seemed to be able to diagnose anything on their own, we were always being referred to really really expensive specialists (one of whom was in New Jersey! as if there was nobody in all of NYC who could treat my dog). The second time they saved my dog's life he had cancer. He had very labored breathing and they took him right away. The doctor was patient and considerate and we had a frank discussion about quality of life because I did not want to pay for an expensive and painful procedure if my dog's life would be compromised. We opted to operate and my dog had 5 more excellent, happy, vigorous months--his cancer did not return, he died of a heart attack. That worked out to be less than $15 a day to be with my beloved dog for 5 more fabulous months. Worth every penny. Though they mentioned chemo to me, we all agreed it was not the right course for me and my dog though it would have been very profitable for the vet. So what are you paying for? Excellent care, excellent facilities, excellent hours--lets face it, this is Park Slope and rents are outrageous, and, it is also expensive to be open and staffed for all those hours. These are kind, caring, dedicated folks doing a great job--if you want the best care for your pets, ignore the cheapskates and trust in AnimalKind. more

Animal kind is not very kind 7/24/2007

Animal Kind\r \r The receptionist staff was rude and condescending.\r \r Animal kind use to do TNR (trap neuter release) for feral cat with the muffins certificate,\r I have taken many stray cats there and released them back into the colony where they came from.\r \r \r I called Animal kind they still take the muffins certificate, now you have to pay over $200.00 dollars. I have low income, I'm just trying to help with the stray cats.\r \r Animal kind is not very kind at all, they are only trying to help there pockets.\r \r \r Toniann\r \r Cons: They are not for the animals, more

Greedy owner and mostly unfriendly staff 4/26/2007

I've been to Animal Kind twice, I made the decision to never go back after the 1st time. Unfortunately, the organization I foster for has an account there so I found myself back once more. The 1st time was about 10 years ago when I brought my young dog in to get neutered. I had a Friends of Animals certificate which stated that an extra charge may apply for dogs over 50lbs. They wanted to charge me for that because my dog was 51lbs. They also tried to tack on a bunch of other unnecessary charges. The receptionist staff was rude and condescending. Dr. Gibson (the owner) is the one who saw my dog. My dog had been badly abused before I got him, was terrified of men at the time and would urinate when scared. When I brought him into the exam room, D. Gibson didn't acknowledge him at all. My dog was very nervous and peed a little on the floor. Gibson became very upset and yelled for someone to come clean it up. His yelling did nothing to calm my dog. He hardly examined him and treated him like dirt. I was not pleased and got the hell out of there. Pros: None Cons: Uncaring, greedy, unfriendly more

Dr. Gibson helped me again and his behavior was better although not caring in the slightest. This time my problem was not so much with him but with the padded bill. They give my foster organization a discount but make up for it by adding extra charges. The receptionist staff was slightly better but not much. One woman gave me an attitude for asking for a copy of the cats records. Which I will need to give to whoever adopts them as proof of their vaccinations and spaying. They charged me for ecollars that they never gave me.\r \r Needless to say I see no reason to ever go there again. I currently take my pets to a wonderful clinic with the 2 best vets I've ever seen. too pushy with expensive tests and services 4/18/2007

They are very kind and caring with the animals, but they push too many expensive tests, and subtly make you feel like a bad pet owner when you decline them. A basic sick visit for something simple can turn quickly into a huge bill, since every little thing is an extra charge. Forget about a major illness or injury unless you are a Trump. more

Excellent care for your pets 4/10/2007

I just returned from a visit to Animal Kind for a check-up for my cat. Both the doctor (Dr. Murphy) and the vet tech were excellent. Both did all they could to make my nervous cat as comfortable as possible during her vaccinations. The doctor spoke with me at length about questions I had about my cat's diet and did not rush me through the appointment. My other cat has had appointments with Dr. Gibson and Dr. Solas, both of whom were professional and very kind. They seem to run behind on the appointments (which is harder for my cats than for me, I'm sure), but the wait is worth the high-quality care my pets receive. I feel lucky to live so close to Animal Kind. more

spaying is major surgery continued 3/23/2007

That price quote you got includes:\r \r 1. A pre-anesthetic bl__d test to make sure there are is not underlying disease of the kidneys or liver, the bl__d glucose is normal and the bl__d count is normal. If something is abnormal we may change the anesthetic protocol, do further tests to determine the cause of the abnormality, or not do the procedure at all.\r \r 2. An intravenous catheter for the administration of anesthesia induction agents, administration of emergency medications should there be an emergency during the procedure, and giving intravenous fluids to maintain normal bl__d pressure during the operation. Decreased bl__d pressure can cause kidney damage which may not become apparent until years later.\r \r 3. Tracheal intubation and maintenance of anesthesia with isoflurane, an anesthetic agent which is inhaled through the lungs. The inhalation route is considered to be the safest way to maintain a surgical plane of anesthesia.\r \r 4. A licensed veterinary technician whose only task during the procedure is to monitor anesthesia. We monitor bl__d pressure, respiratory rate, perfusion, CO2, and heart rate carefully. The risks of surgery generally lie more with anesthesia than the surgery itself, that?s why we monitor the patient so closely.\r \r 5. The services of a skilled veterinary surgeon to do an ovariohysterectomy, the removal of the ovaries and uterus, also called spaying.\r \r 6. Post-surgical pain management with Buprenex, a powerful and expensive medication to alleviate pain.\r \r We don?t want a disaster to occur during a ?routine? procedure on your beloved pet. We?re not selling you an apple pie. Please when you compare prices be sure you are comparing apples to apples.....\r \r Dr. Mark Gibson more

Spaying is major surgery 3/23/2007

Spaying a dog is an everyday procedure, but it is major surgery with the potential of grave consequences if not done right. I think you could take your dog to an inexpensive veterinarian and odds are everything will be fine. But, we don?t like to take chances, it?s too important to us to not take all reasonable precautions to try to ensure a positive outcome.\r \r I am the founder of Animal Kind Veterinary Hospital. I am proud of our hospital, the level of care we provide and the wonderful people who work here. Unfortunately these great people don?t work for free. It?s expensive for us. I do empathize with you and apologize for that. I really have little choice.\r \r continued on next post more

I'll have a Spay, and an Ear Mites, - They want to then sell me an apple pie 3/12/2007

I have Three animals 2 rescue cats and a fancy puppy. Animal Kind is clean, they have very convenient hours, and you can get an appointment quick fast. The Doctors have great pet bedside manner. The price of the care is out of control here, and I never complain about costs, I really don't but come on now, I will call it when I see it...and I feel like they attempt to try and up-sell you on the bill. Like when you go to McDonalds and order some fries and the counter persons ask you if you want to supersize them. Why would you upsale the bill. That is not what pet care should be about. I don't want you to ask me if I want to buy a dental brush and toothpaste, when I'm about to fork over $450.00 on a spay procedure. Give me a break. Even that price is too high for a 6 month old toy dog. Pros: Clean, prompt service, life saving hours Cons: Ridiculous, and unneccesary costs, more
