Editorial review from Citysearch 1/9/2013

I have been going to Allure for four years and I have had nothing but good experiences. Maja is professional, courteous, and always strives to make her clients feel valued and welcome. The salon has a pleasant, clean, and relaxing atmosphere but is not at all stuffy or pretentious. Maja really knows how to make each person's hair look fantastic. Her staff did the hair and makeup for my wedding party and made it a special morning for us in the salon while accomodating each of the ladies' needs. My matron of honor was so impressed that she has gone back to the salon when here on vacation! more

They made me feel like a new woman when I left this place. It was an absolutely beautiful experience. I can't wait to go back in the next month or so. more

brazilian blowout fried top layer of hair.. 4/27/2011

Had brazilian blowout done here and it fried the top layer of my hair! I had to cut it really short, and it has taken months to get back to normal condition. The rest of my hair felt silky and great. The stylist told me there was no formaldehyde in the brazilian blowout treatment..I sure hope that was the case. Emailed the salon, and never heard anything back. more

Worst Day Ever! 3/27/2011

I had my hair done there yesterday and I am very unhappy with my entire experience. I had 2 streaks of purple in my hair that I wanted to have the purple removed. I called first to see if it would even be possible, due to the fact that matalic hair dye was used to put the purple in and would required special product to remove it. (Bleach would just melt it) Chris spoke to me and assured me that they had the products needed to remove the color without any damage to my hair. Next day I showed up to have Chris fix my hair. I sat with lightener in my hair for about 2 hours. He had taken out one foil (the one with the least purple in it) and towel dried that piece of hair off. I grabbed the piece of hair to move it out of my face and the hair broke off in my fingers. I asked him to remove the rest of the foils. I then had to pay for a deep conditioning treatment to help repair the damage that he did to my hair, fallowed by a half ass blow dry. He then proceeded to try and sell me products to take home to fix my damaged hair. ""Messing up someones hair is no way to sell product"" I now have pink and bleached white hair with the texture of a cotton ball. And I paid to have someone do that to me. And I will have to pay more to have someone else fix it. Every time I look in the mirror I regret that I did pay you. If he didn't think he could fix my hair without damaging it he should have just said so, like a few other salons did, and I would have walked out happy. You should never walk out of a salon looking worse than when you walked in. more

BEST HAIR EVERRRRR 2/28/2011

i just got my hair done by Chris the fabulous stylist, i've never found a stylist that listens to me and willing to do what i want. OMG HE IS THE MAN. more

I would definitely NOT recommend this salon. 2/13/2011

This is the first time in 10 years that I have left a hair salon and not been happy with the result. The more I look at my hair in the mirror the more depressed I feel, and too boot I was charged an absolute fortune for it! I couldn?t even get competent advice from the guy doing my hair. He seemed to keep changing his mind about what he was going to do, then completely ignored what I wanted him to do with MY HAIR, did his own thing, and totally messed it up. If he had listened and tried to accommodate me instead of being such an idiot, it perhaps would have turned out ok. My hair now looks black, I went in there with mid brown highlighted hair ? how and why would someone do this. I am very unhappy and can?t afford to go and have my awful hair color redone at a reputable salon and will now have to stick with it until next month when I get paid. Please, if you are looking for a salon, keep looking and do not go to Allure, you will no doubt be extremely disappointed, depressed and miserable with the result and feeling angry at how much it cost you. more

You want to go here! 10/22/2010

I came to Allure Hair Studio & Day Spa in July 2010 with my bridal party. The day before the wedding we all came for the Journey to Rejuvenation- not to be missed! Maja and here wonderful staff were expecting us with open arms, big smiles and champagne! We four ladies had a perfect experience here. We were treated like queens, but also like old friends. No stuffyness here, just genuine and friendly staff. Actually, we were so well treated that our appointments went over time, and we had to leave before we could all complete the package because we had plans for the evening. No matter, Maja rearranged the schedule for the next morning for us to come in early before our hair appointments in order to finish the package. All of our hair-do's were just what we wanted, and everything was perfect. The facial was especially fantastic. I would really, whole-heartedly recommend Allure, especially for a great bridal-party spa day. I will never forget the two days we spent in there, and I can't thank Maja and the Allure girls enough! Go here, you won't regret it! more

Greatest Highlights 3/5/2010

I just came from Allure Hair Studio & Spa and had a wonderful and a great experience with Maja, the owner. Besides that she is a very nice, generous and friendly person, she is also really professional in her work. I have extremely high standards and she has never disappointed me. In fact, I was impressed by the outcome of her highlights. Really, so precise and natural. It was not the first time I went to the Allure Hair Studio & Day Spa. I get the same great service every time, including handmassages for free. I highly recommend Allure Hair Studio & Day Spa and I am looking forward to my next app. Pros: Best Highlights for my hair ever Cons: Nothing so far.... more

The Bomb Diggity! 2/14/2010

Allure is fantastic. I've going here for 4 years and I always look amazing when I leave. The service is outstanding and everyone is friendly. Fox is a master of fabulousness - I trust her implicitly with my hair. more

Pleasantly surprised 2/13/2010

I found them online. Was a little worried after reading reviews but figured if I didn't like it I could leave. It was convenient since I just moved to the area. Service was friendly and efficient. A little pricey but the quality of work was what I was use to on the mainland so I didn't mind. I went during lunch time so the parking lot was a little crowded. They are great at doing blond and I looked natural when I left. Thanks. Pros: friendly, helpful, Cons: Parking and $ more

STAY FAR AWAY FROM HERE!!! 2/8/2010

In a nutshell this is the most flithy spa I have been to. I went in for a pedicure and the chair they have in there is totally repulsive, I don't understand how they can actually charge for this service. The motor on it was so loud that it sounds like a lawn mower and echoed though the entire salon. I could not believe that the owner would actually run this in a salon who claims that they have a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. I would never allow any of my customers to be subjected to such low quality equipment and then charge them such inflated fees for services: they pedicure I got cost $80.00. Then for the hair coloring and hair cut $200, outlandish!! I had not been tested before my hair coloring for an allergic reaction and ended up with terrible itching for weeks, dry scalp with flaking, and HAIR LOSS!! on the top of my head. I did inform my hairdresser and she gave me a scalp treatment in the hopes of diminishing my itching but it did not work and she was well aware of this fact before I left the salon. Since I would be returning the next day to complete my hair services we decided that we would see if the itching would be gone by the morning. I was not!! When I returned the next morning I was asked about the itching and told her that it still is present but being that she would not be touching my scalp with the dying solution I have nothing to worry about. She did see and confirm my hair loss and just recommended styling to just cover up the loss.So of course I trusted her and got the remainder of my services done. So sure my hair looked great when I left the salon. Just when I thought the worst was over the most horrible experience happened. I got my hair done on friday and it was still itching so on sunday afternoon I washed my hair and there was a tremendous amount of dye flowing from my hair, pure color. I still have color release from my hair I just washed it last night! So anyway that night I developed a horrifying rash and hives on my torso and a significant amount on my back and neck. I was waking up every hour and a half that night and was wondering what was happening to me. Then it dawned on me that the hives and itches were mainly on the areas of my body were the water from my head flows. Of course I went to the salon to inform them of the horror that I was experiencing to see if they had anything to help me with this suffering and the owner Maja just recommended going to the dermatologist and said that She did not believe that it was a reaction to the solutions they used on me. She said she had never heard of such allergic reaction in her 19+ years and told me that there was nothing she could do about it. She went as far as to say that my reaction was most likely due to the heavy VOG we were having. I just could not believe that! the VOG!! I have been living here for my entire life so if it was due to that I am sure I would be well aware of it. All she did for me was wash and blow dry my hair, she never even considered giving me and type of complementary treatment or credit for the terrible ordeal. She was not even truly concerned about the events that happened to me following my services rendered from her salon. I am convinced that this salon is only interested in money and not the comfort or well-being of their clients. PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF FROM NEEDLESS SUFFERING AND SPEND YOUR MONEY WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE GENUINE AND TRUST WORTHY!! Pros: NOTHING AT ALL!!! Cons: ANTS AND ROACHES!! GHETTO IN MANOA. more

Wonderful, Relaxing, Top Quality & Worth It!! 1/22/2010

Hair is an extremely important feature of our appearance. We wear it every day and usually can't hide it even despite some pretty creative efforts. I think most of us have had at least 1 or 2 awful hair cuts in our lifetimes and the clever cover-it-with-a-hat technique really doesn't work that well. If you want a hair cut that suits your taste and a hair cut that you're proud to wear every day then Allure is the place to go! Allure has great quality service and is a great choice for anyone who likes how they look! All of the hair stylists are exceptionally well trained and attentive to what you want. No one pushes their own personal creative agenda on you! No one wants you to spill your entire life's story in the chair! The hair stylists are great with a wide range of clientele, because they make you feel comfortable. Of course they can suggest certain types of products to you for purchase/at-home-use, but no one is pushy which I really appreciate. In a day and age when just about every one wants to sell you something it's nice to get a break from that relentless, annoying pushiness. Allure is located in Manoa so the general area also lends itself to serenity. Who doesn't love it there! The physical layout of Allure is great and its two-stories make you feel comfortable--even when it's busy you still have an ample amount of personal space. The hair magazines available to look at are diverse and great! There's a great crepe restaurant across the stress (less than a 2 minute walk away) which is a really nice before or after treat! Aveda and Kerastase are the two hair product lines used, both of which are known for their superior quality. I personally love both product series and they work great on my hair. I am well versed in just about every basic type of hair product, professional and grocery store brands, after many years of exploration. Pros: Beautiful spa that lacks pretentiousness & delivers results! Cons: I can't go every week! more

terribly unprofessional 10/14/2009

NOT RECOMMENDED! DO NOT GO HERE! Although Allure is nice when you walk in, I had a terrible experience with a Brazilian wax, never having felt more uncomfortable in my three years of waxing. The owner handled the situation in the most unprofessional way, including offering me a complimentary service and then later rescinding her offer. I have nothing good to say about the service I received here, and for a spa that is supposed to be top-notch, my experience was very much the opposite. I would never recommend Allure to anyone. Pros: nice ambiance Cons: unprofessional owner/service more

Bridal party fiasco 7/2/2009

The experience there almost ruined my wedding day! I expected more out of an Aveda salon and was sourly disappointed! At first, I was so excited to go get my hair done and my 5 bridesmaids' hair updos. When I called to make appointments and schedule updos for the day of my wedding, I specifically asked what the cost would be for my 5 bridesmaids' updos. When I got there and was all done with everything, went to pay- my bridal make on, hair updo, veil fastened , bridesmaid's hair all updo'd, and just hours before my wedding, they zap me with a bill that was triple the agreed amount for the hairstyles. I was so upset and with my wedding ceremony 3 hours away, I didn't want to get upset, have my make up run, and get into a fight with them on the day of my wedding. It was a most unpleasant experience and they did notthing to honor what the receptionis said over the phone. It was a horrible experience and they still charged me triple what they said they would. If they want to make it up to me, they can still reimbure mefior the $450 and fifty dollars they over charged me. Pros: people were nice; nice atomsphere until the bill came Cons: didn't honor price arragements over phone for bridal party more

Relaxing Massage 4/23/2009

I was given a massage as a gift and was a bit skeptical as to how it would compare to what I was used to at Spa's in the mainland. They proved quite the opposite, from the robes to the tea, the whole experience was wonderful. The masseuse was excellent and very attentive. I had a deep tissue massage for 90 minutes, but it seemed to go longer, plus there was a foot bath and foot massage included. I wish I could go more often! Pros: Atmosphere, professionalism, decor, privacy Cons: In Hawaii, and I live in California more

AN ENCHANTING EXPERIENCE ... 9/30/2008

ALLURE in Manoa to me is like going into a world of relaxation, wonders and deep connection with the spirit of the islands. Its an enchanting experience, which doesn't only beautify who we are, but also let our souls dance. The staff is very authentic. friendly and personal, the spa clean, tasteful, modern and always inspiring. I have been a customer for years now. I love the european facial with a touch of Paris, I adore the lomi lomis bringing my soul to rest and at the same time awaken my inner being. To have Susanna work on ones body is permitting oneself healing on all levels. When it comes to my hair cuts Maja captures my persona in just a cut! . She is a master ... she has the skill, the eye, the style ... and the honesty to bring out the best in your "look"! Maja has the ability to seeing who I am and what my needs are without my instructions. She is continuously on the edge of fashion & style and an inspiration not only personally but also professionally. Pros: Ambience, Service, Professionalism, Satisfaction Cons: Waiting List more

Great customer service 9/30/2008

Maja has been my hair stylist for a number of years. When she moved to a different salon (7 years ago), I searched local popular salons and spas for an experience to match what I had become accustomed to, but nothing could compare. I was elated when I found out that Maja opened her salon, and have remained a faithful client ever since. I find Maja to be a gifted, talented, hard-working craftswoman. The staff at Allure at Manoa always makes me feel comfortable each time I walk into the salon. Suzanne, the masseur and beautician, is great! I spoil myself at least once a month to relieve the stress of my busy lifestyle. The staff at Allure understand my hetic work schedule and continually try to accommodate me. My experience with Maja, Suzanne, and the staff has been wonderful, and I continually look forward to my next visit. more

european hip 9/29/2008

Most every body would probably agree that it is very difficult to get a good hair cut, and since Maya Whitesell moved to the island more than 10 years ago, I didn't need to look any further for a hairdresser that suited my taste. I was even happier, when she finally opened her own spa in 2004 and have been a steady customer ever since. Maya is probably one of the hardest working people that I know, and besides her own efforts, everybody else I encountered at her business, like the front desk people and the hair-washer, have suited my taste very well. One of the things that impresses me most is how often Maya travels to update her skills and how generous she supports the education of of her employees. Pros: service/quality Cons: time for a new mural more
