Best

This is the best Greek restaurant I have ever been too. The best food, great service. Always a favorite place for my family and I to eat.

Worst

Seedy joint in a seedy area of town and memorably bad service. $7.95 for tzatziki in a finger bowl! If you want pita bread to go with it..... well then cough up $2.00 more for 2 ...

Great Food and Service 11/4/2010

Best Restaurant in Town! 7/21/2010

I make my family go here every year for my birthday. I love this place, it feels like I'm in my grandmother's kitchen.. and I'm not even Greek. The dishes are light and never overcooked. The Lamb Silvaki (sp?) is to die for. Buy a glass of wine and the Greek salad on the side, and you'll be transported to a quaint restaurant in Greece. If you have kids, the staff loves to chat with them and make them feel comfortable. That always makes me feel proud. They once broke a plate and the owner (I think) broke a plate himself to make them feel no big deal. Pros: Family Friendly and great food Cons: Location is a bit rough more

Overpriced, Not so great. 2/15/2009

This was my first time at Alexis. The food was rather disappointing. Canned, disgusting vegetables and the Kleftiko was blah.. The service was decent. The atmosphere was enjoyable. Overall the experience was mediocre. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Vegetables side, Prices more

Very good greek food near the Portland Saturday Market 11/22/2008

Alexis is a unique greek place that is very unasuming and gives the impression of being closed on the outside. Located on Burnside between Chinatown and the Portland Saturday Market, you will walk in a nice Greek eatery. The service was friendly and was reasonably attentive. We started off with humus and bread which both were very good. The humus had a nice level of garlic without being overbearing. The bread was great. We decided going simple and both had the lamb/beef gyros and spanikopita. The spanikopita was presented a little differently with the philo more of a topping and bottom vs the more commonly found stuffed triangles of philo. It was a pleasant suprise and very good. The gyro was very good and done on a different style pita than I've normally had. This was more of a hybrid between a tortilla and a typical pita used for gyros. It was good, none the less. The prices were reasonable. Aparently Alexis actually makes and distributes a lot of Greek food products to other places. Pros: Ambience, close to downtown more

Ouch........service & prices..... 3/14/2008

Seedy joint in a seedy area of town and memorably bad service. $7.95 for tzatziki in a finger bowl! If you want pita bread to go with it..... well then cough up $2.00 more for 2 pieces! The food for their prices might have been acceptable had it not been for the wretched attitude of the server. The food really is not cheap when you have to pay for bad service as well! Next time, I will be driving 16 blocks due west and keeping my eye out on the amazing Greek restaurant at the corner of 18th and Burnside. Cons: service, value, and location more

Disappointing in every way 12/11/2007

Not sure why everyone seems to like this place. Here's what I experienced: Cons: Everything more

We LOVED Alexis! 11/15/2007

We went to Alexis on a Sat. night with a party of 11 that included 5 children under the age of 4! We had a reservation and we seated immediately upstairs. From the beginning, the service was impeccable. Our waiter was attentive, experienced and polite. Since our party was so large, we decided to order the family-style meal, which was delicious. I was the lone vegetarian and the waiter offered to bring me vegetarian substitutes for the entrees that contained meat. Even after asking for extra napkins and plates, more milk for the kids, etc., our waiter seemed unfazed and continued to provide excellent service. The food was authentic and plentiful and the ambiance was festive and inviting. We were in Portland for the weekend visiting from Seattle, and my husband remarked that we should make the 3-hour drive again just to visit Alexis! A true Greek dining experience! more

Greek food even your Baba loves... 2/12/2007

You have probably passed Alexis a number of times... every time you go to the Portland Saturday Market or drive in to China Town. It's entrance is very unobtrusive and looks to be closed - that is what people WANT you to think. This has to be the best Greek food this side of Mount Olympus. Absolutely fantastic service, cuisine and ambiance. Their dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) are like no other - warmed with a light gravy. The avgolemono (egg and lemon soup) will bring tears of joy to your eyes. The staff and owner go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable, happy and well fed. Prices are so fair that you will double take your bill. Trust us... make your way to Alexis. more

Warm atmosphere, bad vegetables 9/22/2006

I've always heard great things about Alexis so finally gave it a try. The service was wonderful, the environment was great and it felt like I was part of a large family. The belly dancer came out just a little past 8pm and that was fun too. I ordered the lamb souvlaki and my daughter ordered the lamb chops. They were both very delicious as was the salad and feta cheese appetizer. The only thing I could see improved are the rice and vegetables, they were a bit underwhelming and I had hoped for some type of Tzatziki sauce with the dish. For the money, I think the Greek Cuisina has better food, though for warm and welcoming atmosphere Alexis wins out. Pros: Good place to bring children and relatives, belly dancers, appetizers Cons: Location, bland rice & soggy veggies more

Best Greek in Portland 9/11/2006

Very friendly and accomodating staff. The Melitzano is a must try as well as the chicken/lemon soup. They also have an excellent menu of Greek wines. more

Best Mousakka and calamari 8/8/2006

This is the spot I crave. It doesn't pretend to be upscale and the food is always fantastic, the wines are reasonable in price, and the staff is friendly. more

No Hummus at a Greek restaurant!!!! 7/16/2006

My family and I went here for lunch on a Friday at 12:15 and ordered hummus as an appetizer. After about 5 minutes we were informed that they were out of hummus. We were a little dumbfounded and contemplated leaving but decided we would stick it out. While we waited 30 minutes for our food to arrive we watched everyone who arrived after us get, and eat, their meals. more

Always a Treat 5/22/2005

At Alexis I always have an outstanding expirence. Gerry the manager is so friendly and kind. The food and service has always been excellent. I have been eating there with my family since we moved to portland (1990) and now that I am on my own, I still frequent Alexis with my friends. Try the Gyros. Pros: Service, Value, Excellent Food more

Nice place 4/12/2005

The service was really good as soon as we walked in. They give you a loaf of sesame seeded bread in the beginning, it would be better if it was heated warm though but otherwise it's still good. I ordered the Moussaka. The only thing i didn't like is that the entrees are served with vegetables that remind me of the frozen bagged veggies with peas, green beans, etc. cooked in their own tomatoey sauce. It tasted good but just didn't seem very authentic greek to me. They have an extensive wine list though and other than the veggies i'd say everything else was really good. Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly service Cons: Prefrozen veggies? more

Great for lunch! 9/19/2004

My coworkers and I went to Alexis for lunch, and it was a pleasant surprise. I'd been for dinner before, and was hopeful that our lunch experience would be equally satisfying. Service was fast, efficient, and courteous. The food, of course, was wonderful; and reached our table quickly. Next time you need a good Greek meal downtown, skip the Greek Cusina and try Alexis for lunch. Pros: great food, fast service, nice atmosphere more

Superb 2/12/2004

I believe Alexis is a rare restaurant that stays true to it's traditions. The atmosphere is of a classic mediteranean taverna. The portions are large and very reasonably priced. For a night out with the family or with friends, Alexis is a great place to go. Pros: inexpensive, service, large groups Cons: , no smoking more

Kalos 4/17/2003

Best Greek I've ever had. Also a very comfortable place to eat. The service was less than excellent, but the food more than made up for her. Pros: food, ambiance, price more

Opa! 10/26/2002

Bravo! There's a Greek restaurant in town with authentic food AND atmosphere. Don't put off trying this place out because of the ugly exterior and surroundings. It's a whole nother world inside. Alexis gets both the basics and the specialities right. The Greek salad is delicious, especially the feta cheese. You can't go wrong with the oven roasted chicken and potatoes. Jerry, who must be the manager, and who comes around to every table, is very friendly and down-to-earth. It's a great place for any size group, large or intimate. The menu accomodates a variety of budgets. If you miss Greece and want a great meal in a comfortable, warm atmosphere, Alexis is the place. Pros: Authentic atmosphere, Great food, Good service Cons: Building exterior more

flaming cheese! 8/12/2002

I love everything about the Alexis but sometimes my excuse for going there is just to order saganaki. Saganaki is greek cheese that they bring to your table in flames. It is delicious and entertaining. Try to go on the weekends when they have belly dancers, but if you have a large group you might want to make reservations. Pros: belly dancers Cons: downtown parking more

Portland's Best Place to EAT! 8/1/2002

These days it is hard to distinguish dining from theater; instead of focusing on the food, the restaurant industry has become enamored with trendy decor and flashy presentation. This is not good if you're anything like me, becuase when I go out to eat I am concerned with only one thing: EATING A GOOD MEAL. At the Alexis, I get more than a good meal--I get an excellent meal! An excellent meal that is accompanied by authentic Greek hospitality (which translates into unparalelled service) and lively atmosphere! The calamari is the best in Portland and the tzatziki has just the right kick. The bread and pitas are beyond explanation! The Alexis is always consistent and a great place to take dates and relatives from out of town. I am confident claiming that it is Portland's best place to eat!! Pros: Great Food, Great Atmosphere, Inexpensive more
