I second what Alps had to say... Ajanta has good Indian food, albiet pretty similar to Amar and Jeet India. They have good variety on the menu and the food is generally consistant and fresh. I have heard that the restaurant changed hands at some point, but have not noticed any change in the quality of food. more

I have read some of the reviews here and all I can say is you one star people are curmudgeons who need to get out more. This place is a GREAT family Indian restaurant. Culture is pretty authentic and the food is excellent. Dont come here if you want Americana Bistro styled Indian faux cuisine with a smily face attitude, just stick to applebees or something if you want that kind of service. If your in the mood for racism served on a platter, then Ajanta India is your place. I'm in a interracial relationship with someone from India and I've eaten at other Indian establishment prior, including Ajanta. However, this one male waiter in particular decided to let us know how he felt about interracial couples and slammed our plates and silverware against the table as he waited for us. Obviously he had a problem, because he continued to walk back and forth past our table glaring at us, like some thug. I told the owner, ( who was a sweet elderly Indian woman ) and she told us that she's had problems with the waiter in the past and agreed that we were treated that way because he's a bigot, however, she would not discount our bill or reprimand him in anyway whatsoever. This used to be a great Indian restaurant - until it changed management/ownership about 2 years ago. Now the food is well below the exquisite standards Ajanta had maintained for many years prior. The food is lacking in flavor and subtlety, somehow the tastes are empty and the textures are greasy. Do yourself a favor and go to Jeet or Amar. A pity. Cons: Food is lacking in flavor more

Ajanta was taken over by a new family....and they are not friendly at all. They do not warmly welcome you, do not smile, and the prices are not reasonable. Food is decent and the environment is clean. It is too bad they can't be more hospitable. more

So one day in the middle of the day a friend and I came by to eat at Ajanta (because honestly the food is pretty good). The "open" neon sign was illuminated and the door was unlocked. So we I went in and walked in the door to the dining area. It was dark so I said "hello"? Then I realized that all of the workers and many family members (there were tons of people!) were sleeping all sprawled out in the booths, on the floor, etc! One of the men jumped up, rushed towards me, and shouted "Closed! Closed!" Shocked, we stood there as he basically pushed us out of the door. Weird stuff... Pros: Well rested workers? We're new to the area and have tried several Indian restaurants all around, but Lo and Behold, the best one is just literally around the corner from us! They have a buffet on Monday and Tuesday nights and on Sundays as well. Their service is very personal especially when they get to know you, and their garlic nan bread and dal soup are very good. Check out the Tikka Masala-just hot enough but not too hot to let the curry taste be overwhelmed. This is my favorite Indian Restaurant in Dayton!!! The food is great and the service is effeicent. Plus, they always have great deals, such as the Lunch Buffet special and weekly coupons! You got to try it! more
