I have been to Aix multiple times in the past few months. I recently moved to Uptown and wanted to find a place where I was comfortable and felt like a valued guest when there. Aix is it. Their menu has changed recently and has gone back to "Modern French Cuisine"; this I couldn't be happier with. The Marrow Encrusted Filet Mignon falls apart with a butter knife; it's one of the best steaks I've ever tried, and I'm not even a huge red meat fan. The House Salad is by far the best in Denver; mixed greens, warm pears, melted brie and the BEST dressing I've ever had, a maple vinaigrette. I finished my meal with their Creme Brulee, a Cherry Creme Brulee, again, the best I've ever had. The atmosphere of the restaurant is what topped it off for me; it's small and quaint, yet surprisingly I didn't feel crowded. My server was excellent, was able to pair a wine with my meal for me, suggested everything I had ordered as her favorite and was extremely well educated of their menu. Love, love, loved it! Aix, thank you, and I will be back! more

This retired chef gives Aix two thumbs way up! 12/8/2008

I brought my husband to Aix for our anniversary after the restaurant had been highly recommended by a few friends. When we arrived, it was still happy hour. We were told about the specials, and decided to start with some of the $5 small plates. The duck confit hash, and the mache tuna roll were both fabulous. For dinner, I had the short ribs, which fell off the bone and were seasoned perfectly. My husband had the bacon wrapped tuna, which was cooked to perfection, and if I remember correctly, he left not a bite to go to waste! The chocolate cake with lavender anglaise was absolute heaven with the red wine that our server suggested. After this visit, we went back again for the Wednesday night special prix fixe menu. Both of us found the menu to be very creatives seasonal, and absolutely delicious. We noticed that it was much busier than the Sunday night when we first came in. It seems like the Wednesday night menu has a dedicated following. With good reason. My husband and I are both extraordinarily critical of restaurants, but neither of us had a bad word to say about Aix. I don't usually review restaurants in the public forum like this, but after reading the last couple of reviews, I felt that maybe someone who knows about food should get the word out. I was a chef for 20 years in California, and I will definitely be back to enjoy Aix. Pros: The food! Especially on Wednesdays! more

WOW. What happened to Aix. Someone replaced an amazing French neighborhood bistro with sub-par sports bar food. The seasonal menu is now a pathetic cliched mix of standard fare - presented at the same price range as the original AIX. What?s even sadder is that the staff is fully aware of the unoriginality the shell of a restaurant has become and has a fully rehearsed justification for the ?transformation? the establishment has deteriorated into. At the very least, Aix must advertise themselves as a gastro-pub, there menu is deserving of nothing more. Pros: Gtreat vibe Cons: Not Aix. Better off going to other generic menu's at cheaper chains more

Bad Service, okay food 6/18/2008

We went to Aix for the first time to celebrate a birthday. My husband and I arrived an hour early to have drinks and wait for another couple. Our waiter didn't offer any information about the happy hour specials. When we asked, he told us the bottle of wine we wanted was not available and then he made an incorrect recommendation on another bottle. For starters we had the salmon dish that was just okay. I only had two bites and that was enough. My husband waited at least 15-20 minutes for a second beer and we had to flag down the waiter and ask for it. Other tables seemed to be munching on bread so we asked for some too but was not offered any. Later, our friends arrived and the waiter only took a drink order for one friend and then walked away. Once again we had to flag down the waiter to place another drink order. He didn't apologize but rather laughed of his forgetfulness. Next, the waiter brought our menus and didn?t bother to tell us about any specials or changes to the nightly menu. So we proceed and select our entree only to find out the entree half of us selected was not available. It would have been nice to know this beforehand. About the food... Mussels were okay, short ribs were good, pasta was okay, shrimp was okay, and the dessert was okay. Music was great! We will not be back based on this experience. It's not worth it! Go somewhere else! more

Took advantage of the happy hour and it was great! The drinks alone are worth going there for... though pricey. Felt like they were one of a kind, so worth it. My entree was fantastic and so were the rest of my party's. A pretty pricey place for Denver, but worth trying atleast once. more

Wonderful flavors! Best to sample on a 5/5/5 night (read review for details) 12/16/2007

I love this quaint little restaurant! It's wonderful for a date night or an evening out with friends. Yes, it's small, but that just adds to it's charm. My favorite time to go is during their 5 for $5 at 5PM special. You can try different small plates, desserts and wines for $5 each. It's a great way to sample several dishes at once. During nice weather, be sure to grab a seat on their patio and enjoy the people watching on 17th Ave. Pros: wonderful flavors, specials, wine list Cons: none more

Ok, I've been hearing things about this place for years and finally decided to try it. It may have been good in the early years but there is certainly no reason to go now. First, the space is cramped and even just half full it's impossible to carry on a conversation. There are no accoustically friendly touches so it is loud, loud. I was with a fellow "foodie" so we really sampled the menu and I feel comfortable saying that nothing was particularly good. Our overwhelming impression was that even with some luxury ingredients like morrels and caviar nothing had much flavor. Blindfolded I honestly don't think we could have told you if we were eating the escargot or the morrels. Not that if mattered, because nothing was worth finishing, but the portions are miniscule for the prices. One appetizer special was one seared scallop for $15, a tiny lamb chop for $28. Ridiculous. Service was friendly enough but spotty - had to pour our own wine and asked for bread twice before finally receiving it. Also, with all of the activity in the neighborhood now, parking is major hassle. Save your money and go to Potager or Fruition, or, frankly, even Mizuna is probably no more expensive and you'll be so much happier with the food and ambiance. Pros: I'm thinking, I'm thinking Cons: loud, cramped, flavorless food, miniscule expensive portions more

Excellent food....no I mean really excellent food!!! Atmosphere is fun and facinating people watching. GO! 5/4/2007

Wow! This place is just about perfect. From the moment you walk into the room you are made to feel valued by the staff. It?s so chic and full of cool you can?t not have fun. There is just enough separation between the bar and dinning area. This is a great place to people watch while sipping wine. We were there Friday night. They have an excellent selection of wines by the glass. Not the typical ho?hum wines. Aix has French Champagne by the glass! If you have a problem with French wines, no problem, they have some facinating choices. The food is definitely the star of the show. Lobster risotto, pork tenderloin and seared tuna salad nicoise were superb. I sent my tuna back because I like it a little more done and the waitress was all over it! She swooped it away and with grace brought it back on another plate that had been re-decorated with dramatic presentation. I love great service! The waiter had a small team keeping an eye on our table. WOW! The cheese selection plate was too sparse. I think they should pump it up a bit. That's my only complaint. It?s a little loud, but you can still hear each other. In this case the crowd didn?t bother us, because we had so much fun. Go with a date, with friends, or alone and people watch. But go! I recommend reservations. more

Unbelievable food - small plates and large plates, absolutely amazing. 4/27/2007

You cannot go wrong here - everything I have had, and friends have had, has been outstanding. Small plates - be sure to try the mussels, lobster risotto and tuna. Large plates - don't miss the tuna, but ask for it rare. They tend to overcook and only the center of the medallions are rare. If you do get it seared rare, it is fabulous, served with green beans, potatoes and olives in a delicious, light cream sauce. Very nice wine list, excellent service. Pros: Amazing food, wine, $5 parking across the street, not a place for children. Cons: A little pricey, but worth it. Very busy. Not a place for children. more

Worst Service I have ever experienced 4/13/2007

hannahrv Provided by Partner
I was so excited to go to this highly rated restaurant and was appalled by how miserable the service was. Our waitress clearly did not want to serve us because of our ages( I was with a group of friends and we are all in our mid 20's), the food took almost an hour and for some reason it was coursed out so that one of my fellow diners did not have anything while the rest of us did. I was truly shocked. I have worked in the industry for years and have never experienced anything so disappointing. The food was at best sub-par.I don't know how this place has stayed in business and would not recommend anyone waste their money more

Good Eats, Hairy Treats 3/10/2007

The food was not phenominal, it was good, the potatoes were unique and tasty. Unfortunately the service was mediocre at best. The problem wasn't with their attitude, though they weren't the friendliest. My boyfriend got a hair in his potatoes and proceeded to tell the waitress who offered to bring him a new dish when he was already three fourths of the way through, which he declined. Considering we were so easygoing with the whole situation we figured they would take that dish off the bill, instead we were charged in full. Overall the food was good, overpriced and small portioned. The fact that we were charged for a meal with the chef's hair as an ingredient was enough to not go back. Pros: Nice decor, unique brunch menu Cons: cramped, overpriced, problems not handled correctly more

Great Brunch 3/4/2007

If you want to have a remarkable meal that is atypical of most Sunday brunch menus, try AIX. The bloody Mary's were fabulous and the food flawless. I had the shrimp and grits and it was to die for... I will concede that the waitress was a bit of a snot, but I just had a second bloody Mary and enjoyed the food- it is a nice ambience and a welcome escape from standard egg and waffle houses! Pros: FOOD, ambience Cons: service can be slow and annoying more

Wonderful Food, Snooty Rude Staff! 2/18/2007

chucksampson Provided by Partner
The Sunday brunch is to die for, the wine selection is great and the cozy little restaurant is so inviting. That is until you encounter the cold, rude hostess. We have been there twice in the last month for Sunday brunch and both times found the hostess and staff to be cold. This lesbian owned restaurant could use a little lesson in friendliness. But if you can get past the staff you are sure to enjoy the Open Faced Pulled Pork Burrito and the cucumber infused bloody marys are so yummy! Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Wine, Cocktails Cons: Staff, Service more

Bistro AIX OFF your list 8/30/2006

To whom it may concern, In an effort to prevent future nightmares, I would like to warn any and everybody: DO NOT GO TO BISTRO AIX. We attended the pre-fix wine dinner - wine was great, food was okay at best, service was horrendous. Not only did they take three hours, they served half our table 30 minutes before the rest of the plates arrived, and the waitress claimed we were late (we arrived 5 minutes early) and belligerent after THEY served us 3 glasses of wine throughout the 3 hour dinner. After comp-ing our table 10% due to bad service, they refused to serve us dessert, and asked us to leavewith pleasure we did. Upon exiting, we looked into the kitchen to find the entire wait staff and chefs flipping us off...classy. They claimed to be one of the Top 5 restaurants in Denver, but as far as I can tell the only skill they have achieved is worst dining experience I have ever had. Word to the wise, avoid this place like the plague. Cons: worst dining experience EVER! more

How do you say YUMM in French? Aix 7/11/2006

bemcand Provided by Partner
After my first visit to Aix I couldnt wait to go back. In true French cuisine tradition the serving sizes are small, but worth it. Every crumb was delicious with a perfect melding of flavors and textures. Our waiter recommended doing several small plates instead of one larger entree plate which was a great idea because it gave us a chance to sample more items. Everything was excellent (I especially loved the escargot tart!). The only disappointment is in the wine, if you are not much of drinker there are only a few wines you can get by the glass. Pros: Food Cons: Tight space more

AIX-PECT to be Hungry Again 11/18/2005

gcg1965 Provided by Partner
If you want to satisfy your hunger, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. If you want to hear your dinner companions talk, don't go there either. But if you want to be upsold constantly on the foods and drinks, and be given an attitude when you don't cave in, then this is the place for you. The portions are small, the tables too narrow and too close together, the steel panels that seperate the dining room and the bar knock you in the head if you sit by them, and there are too many mushroom dishes on the menu. Substance is not a word I would associate with this restaurant. Pros: Food Quality, Nice Decor Cons: Tiny Portions, Wait Staff's Snobbery, Too much $$ more

This is a phenomenal restaurant. From the small plates, entrees, service, ambience, you name it, they have got it right. My husband and I haven't had one bad thing here, after visiting now 4 times. Never had a bad experience, love the wine list and the friendly staff, convenient location as well. Definitely try the Double chocolate torte dessert. Takes awhile, so order ahead during dinner, but my favorite in town. The chocolate in the center oozes out, you won't believe how decadent and good it is. Pros: Quaint, Easy to Share, Updated Menu Cons: NONE! more

Terribly disappointing 4/18/2005

This restaurant is responsible for ruining my one year anniversary. I called ahead to give them a heads up on this special occasion, but it was never mentioned and we were given very poor service and very average food. I spoke with the owner and she got very defensive and basically said that my poor experience must have been my fault. She offered to have us back if I would email her, which I did, 3 months ago. I have heard nothing back. Skip this one in favor of the many restaurants downtown that put understand the importance of top notch service. more

Aix-tra Good. 3/11/2005

harddriv Provided by Partner
Fields of lavender surround Aix-en-Provence, and thus winds its way through this menu. We started with a tasty complimentary amuse bouche of poached fruits with chevre and a balsamic reduction. We then ordered two small plates : the assorted cheese plate with poached fruit and lavender honey and the menage a fois - duck confit, seared fois gras, and a liver mousse. Both were good and reasonably sized. For our entrees we had the Pappardelle with duck and wild mushrooms, and a very flavorful roasted chicken (hints of lavender) with baby vegetables and fingerlings. The portions were generous. The wine list was concise and a little pricey but every table seemed to be indulging. For dessert we had a dense rice pudding with caramel, bailey's mousse, and dark chocolate. It was good but a little dry. The service was a slow but friendly. Dining room is small some make reservations. Pros: Interesting Flavors, Parking, Fresh Ingredients Cons: Gets Crowded, Pricey Wines more
