Doing What They Can 3/15/2011

In April 2009, my aunt and I went to get our puppy from ASAS. A friend of mind recommended them after they got their puppy from there in 2001. He's an awesome dog so I definitely thought it'd be worth the really long trip up there. The place is definitely in need of a lot of work and they are overrun with cats and dogs, but I think they're doing what they can to help them. I feel bad for the bad press they get. When you have that many puppies, some are bound to get sick. Anyway, we came home after a few hours with a shepherd mix and he was quite the little pup. He has an interesting personality and was very healthy. When we left, we were given a small leash for him as well as a bag of puppy food, bones and toys, and coupons. They also offered to help with the costs of neutering him, but we didn't taken them up on that and paid the costs ourselves. We did have some problems with puppy diarrhea in the first few weeks, but I'm pretty sure that was just because of his change of food and the stress of moving. It has been two years since that visit and he is still healthy and happy. I've never met such a smart dog. I would recommend them highly if someone is looking to help a puppy. more

Couldn't be happier 1/12/2010

I did a lot of research on dogs and different breeds before looking into what the shelters in my area had. I looked up ASAS based on a recommendation from a friend that adopted her puppy from there. I drove for an hour to the shelter and was greeted at the door. I had to different litters already in mind that I wanted to look at after looking on their website. I was pleased to learn that one of the litters had already been adopted. An employee led me into a room that had a litter of pups with their mom. They all looked good - just not yet old enough to be adopted. I fell in love with one of them and ""reserved"" him until he was old enough to be weaned. They called me a couple weeks later and said he had been given his shots and was ready to be taken home. \r When I went to pick him up, they supplied me with a warm towel to take him out into the snow with, dvds, some cream for a minor skin irritation he had, heartworm medicine for the next month and a bag full of goodies and coupons. I was glad to see enthusiastic employess who knew the answers to all of my questions about all the dogs there.\r My puppy had been rescued from Tennessee where he and his siblings and mother were doomed to the gas chamber before ASAS stepped in. \r My pup did have a minor case of worms but was easily and inexpensively treated. \r What made me feel even better was the phone call I got a month later asking how my puppy was doing. THey were happy to hear that he was socializing and adapting well to his new home. They also told me that not only were all the puppies in his litter adopted, but their mom was too. \r I do recommend this shelter if you are looking to adopt a younger dog. The staff was great and friendly and the animals there seemed to be well taken care of.""\r \r \r \r \r \r \r Pros: Happy puppy whose life I saved Cons: small space, could become over crowded and/or dirty more

I had good luck! 11/5/2009

We got a puppy from Save a Stray and she is doing great! She had a few minor issues (ringworm, respiratory infection) in the very beginning but that should be expected when you are adopting an animal from a shelter. I do not hold Save a Stray accountable for these illnesses. I adopted from Save a Stray with intentions of saving a puppies life. And I felt I did so. I have several friends who have also adopted from Save a Stray with much success. You always run a risk when adopting a puppy from a shelter, but the reward of giving a stray animal a good home is worth it. Pros: You're saving an animal more

Don't go here 7/13/2009

They do not know how to treat animals here because the owner thinks she's a Vet. Our puppy died because of her and refused to give back our ""donation"" or any vet bills. They earn money by stealing it from you. Cons: all more
