I am from Los Angeles where the quality of Japanese restaurants is excellent and I have been to Japan many times. I finally found a place in Virginia Beach that equals the best I've been to. Daruma restaurant is under new ownership and definitely much better than before. Their sushi is always fresh with excellent presentation that sets it apart. I work nearby and have taken many of my co-workers with me for lunch and they become instant fans of the restaurant because of the excellent food and also the nicest staff. The Japanese chef, Hiro, and his wife Kathy offer the best of both worlds with a Thai menu as well. My favorite is the Thai lunch buffet with sushi appetizers.
Pros: Excellent Japanese food and sushi with a Thai menu too
Cons: Restaurant has to overcome legacy of past ownership - much better now
