I don’t think there is enough room here to tell the world how great my experience was with Dr. Stewart and his staff. I was sent by my local optometrist to see him for an evaluation of a cataract in my right eye. The vision in my right eye, had slowly deteriorated over the last year, and my doctor was unable to correct the vision with glasses or contacts. He told me that the only solution to my problem, and blurred vision was to undergo cataract surgery. He told me that he would send me to “the best” surgeon in town for a consultation. Needless to say, when the word, “surgery” came up, I was extremely apprehensive and nervous about any surgery near or on my eye. But by this point, I was desperate, and was ready to see better.\r
My doctor was able to easily find an available time in Dr. Stewart’s office, by using the internet. It was super convenient, because they didn’t have to call his office, wait on hold, or wait for a call back. Within minutes I had my time, place, and an organized folder that included Dr. Stewart’s Bio, office map, and general paperwork that I could fill out before getting to the appointment. \r
Now with the availability of the internet, I was able to do my research to see if there is a difference between cataract surgeons, and their surgical techniques. I was amazed to find that there was a dramatic difference in cataract surgery techniques. Most of the doctors that do cataract surgery do what is called a “block,” which involves inserting a large needle behind the eye, to inject anesthetic medicine. The surgery usually took between 20 minutes to up to 45 minutes!! The eye wound was closed using one or two stitches, and the eye was then patched with a shield, and told to remove the next day in the office. The patients were told not to bend over, drive, or do any strenuous activity for several weeks after surgery. The second eye was usually done, if needed, a month later. I compared this technique with the current technique to which Dr. Stewart has been using for years! Dr. Stewart uses topical anesthetic drops to numb the surface of the eye, and has stopped using the needle almost 10 years ago! His average surgical time for a cataract surgery is less than 5 minutes!! He also does not patch the eye after surgery so the patient can begin using the eye, and seeing out of the eye immediately after surgery. There is also no restrictions of activity, besides swimming, following the surgery. \r
The front office staff greeted me with a smile on the day of my appointment. I was brought back to see the technician within 15 minutes after arrival. They did a complete work up on my eyes, and did many computer tests and measurements on my eyes, before Dr. Stewart came and met with me. He was personable, and greeted me with a handshake and a smile. He took his time with the examination, and then was very calm and deliberate when he explained exactly what a cataract was, and how it can be treated. He made sure that all my questions were answered, and also explained to me that he could put an implant in my eye that would not only make me see better, but without glasses!! WOW!! I have worn glasses my whole life!!\r
I had the surgery and now I am happy and can see without glasses! Thanks to my local doctor for sending me to a great eye surgeon! Thanks Dr Stewart and staff!!\r
