We went to the soft opening of the new Paddy Coynes location on Pier 70 last night. Since we arrived relatively early (just before 6PM), we nabbed a great spot in the corner near the fire - highly recommend this table for those chilly, drizzly Seattle winter evenings! Our server's name was Kevin and for being on the job for a whopping 2.5 hours before we sat down at his table, he was phenomenal. Great service - attentive but not hovering, more than happy to accommodate our more interesting requests (example: hubs asked for a ""small Guinness""). Waters were never empty, good deal. As per usual, the soda bread is the best in Seattle. Both the white and the wheat - go get some! It's actually Pat's mom's recipe and it is stellar. They also sell it in loaves for take home and it freezes well. Just sayin'. I ordered the Wedge Salad with salmon, sans red onions. It was just what it purported to be: a great slab of iceberg covered in yummy, chunky blue-cheese dressing studded with bacon and tomato slices. A good-sized hunk of light salmon adorned the plate not totally covered in iceberg wedge. It came with a steak knife for cutting the wedge and am I glad it did! It was a little tricky maneuvering the cut-up lettuce on the plate (small plate), but I managed and the whole thing was quite delicious. Great flavor in the blue-cheese dressing (which can make or break a wedge salad) and the tomatoes actually tasted like tomatoes (not like nothing, which can be the case often). Two friends ordered the Shepherd's Pie and I was lucky enough to taste a bite: again, great stuff! I'll be back to try it on my own, it was warm and flavorful and the perfect menu item for a cold night. Another friend went with the Potato Leek Soup and declared it wonderful. The only thing that didn't totally stand out was the Irish Stew - it was overall pretty good (huge portion!), but was too salty - chalk it up to a new kitchen and a soft opening, hopefully it was just a one-time thing for the stew. Overall, the new location is great now and will be even better once the new tunnel is in place and the Viaduct is down. If you're here for lunch, it's right next to the Olympic Sculpture Garden; perfect for an afternoon stroll after your meal.
