Cupcakes were a novelty 10 years ago, but I'm so over them now. What's to love about a small frosted chunk of cake? So, I've avoided the Cookie Jar despite all the buzz I've heard over the last few months because cupcakes don't interest me. Last Friday, my girlfriends dragged me here for dessert after lunch, and I was surprised that cupcakes are only a small part of the menu here. They have the standard chocolate chip cookies, etc., but there were also a lot of really unusual cookies here. I picked up three different kinds of sandwich cookie, and the biggest gingerbread cookie (shaped like a star instead of that annoying little man) ever. In the cupcake refrigerator, I ignored the 2 shelves of cupcakes and focused on all the other pastries. I took home a mini caramel cheesecake in the shape of a little dome that was fantastic, and a chocolate cake that was more like a brownie -- all moist and fudgy the way I like it. Without exception, everything was extremely fresh and very good quality. The brownie cake was made of Valhrona chocolate, which I have never seen in another bakery in Houston, and across the board, the desserts I tried could have been featured in a top Houston restaurant. I can't give Cookie Jar my highest rating because they have all those cupcakes wasting space in their display, but I have to admit I was wrong to stay away for so long.
Pros: Lots of fresh, sophisticated cookies and desserts you can't find anywhere else in town
