Transylvania University, with a student population of about 1100, offers 25 different majors, small class sizes, distinguished faculty, and a strong grounding in liberal arts education. Founded in 1780, it is the United States' 16th college, and the first one west of the Alleghenies. Average class size is 18 (and many have less than 10) students. Tuition and fees: $19,650; room and board: $6,590 . Affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), they have a tradition of tolerance and open inquiry.
