At lunch in the Commonwealth Club last week, I ordered a daiquiri, which turned out to be a big mistake. The waitress asked if I wanted it on the rocks or with salt, which should have given me my first clue. I explained that I wanted a traditional, non-frozen daiquiri. After a long delay, (everyone else's drinks had long been served), she brought me a frozen pina colada. When I said that wasn't a daiquiri, she became rude and abusive. Next, a man who identified himself as a bartender offered to get me a replacement. I said that if they didn't know how to make a daiquiri, that would be fine: I would order something else. No, no, he said, it's a simple matter. After a long delay, (by now our food had been served) he reappeared with a glass of flavored vodka. When I said that daiquiris were not made with vodka, he too became rude and defensive (although not as bad as the waitress had been), and said that that was the way they make them there!
