My husband and I are big bbq fans and love sampling the newest restaurants, which are especially good in Des Moines. I was pretty excited while walking up to Wendell's with my husband, the flashy neon signs of fire get you into a grilling kind of mood. Upon entering I was surprised as to how narrow the restuarant was, creating very little room should a line start to form. There was a general bbq menu, a bit smaller then most place, but prices were very reasonable. I decided on the sliced beef sandwich, with cole slaw, and their special cornbread, which is baked with slice jalanpeno peppers. We were there right when they opened, and were the only ones in the eatery, which was nice because the service was prompt. Luckily they provide big jugs of sauce ranging from mild to super hot, lined up in order, because my sandwich had very little on it. The cole slaw was fantastic, some of the best I've ever had, the bread was suprisinly deliscious although I'm not a big spicy person, but the sugar coating the top balanced out any intense fire. The only negative I have on the food was the meat, although very flavorful it was still a tad too dry. Other then that the staff was very friendly, but the room seemed a bit dingy and dull compared to the windows outside.
