The best time I've ever had at a bar. 3/31/2010

It was so easy to make a reservation online. My friends and I got there, and a table literally had my name on it. The piano players were GREAT. I cannot believe how many songs they knew. They were funny and kept us entertained all night long. Our server and the bar tenders were awesome too. It doesn't matter what you order, if you can think of the drink they'll make it for you. It was so busy there too. I thought I would have to wait forever for a drink, but service was really quick. I recommend this place to all of my friends and family. I can't wait to go back for more. Pros: Great entertainment and excellent service. Cons: No cons that I can think of. more

Great Entertainment Horrible Waitress 1/29/2010

The entertainment was fun and unique and my friends and I absolutely loved it...but our waitress was horrible. From the moment we got there she spoke to us in a rude tone and sounded annoyed when we started to order extra sodas. At the end of the night when it was time to leave, we had her split the tab so it could be paid. She came back with a bill that seemed overcharged. The bill did not have any details, just a set amount. When I kindly asked her if she could explain how much everything was, well of course she was a witch about it. Regardless, I was still going to leave her a tip, I wasn't that cheap. I was going to pay my tab and leave a cash tip. We weren't ready to leave quite yet, we wanted to stay and listen to the piano players a little longer. With all of us sitting at the table still not ready to leave she picked up a five left on the table by my friend sitting next to me, then picked up my check and in front of everyone and in the most rude way you could imagine, said loudly, "You're only going to tip me five for the whole night?" Well if that ignorant waitress would have waited for us to leave, we were in fact going to leave her a decent 30-40 percent tip per person CASH!!! As an owner of a business and 16 years experience in customer service, I understand how hard it can be sometimes to serve in these positions. That's why when I go out, I like to leave a little more than expected to waiters/waitresses that really do a good job and even a decent one, but last night, I could not believe someone could have chosen to staff such a horrible character. If it were my business this person would be fired immediately. Would I go back there??? Amazingly....yes I would, because the entertainers are so great, but I would never be served by that person again and if I continued to receive poor service from someone different then I would cease to go and not recommend the place. Pros: Great Fun Entertainment but Cons: Could get stuck with a rude waitress and poor service more

Thanks for the resolution 9/23/2009

I had a problem that The Tavernacle has fixed, and taken care of. I just wanted to be fair to them, and let everyone know that they resolved my problem. Pros: nice pianos more

Great Entertainment.....Not So Great Service! 3/30/2008

My husband and I love this place and love the loud obnoxious people there. We always take our friends here...but NEVER forget to inform them of the SLOW and UNFRIENDLY bar service. Pros: Always Great Entertainment Cons: BAR SERVICE =( more

Love it! 1/24/2008

Spent a great New Years Eve here. Atmosphere is great. Musicians are funny and talented (and a bit adult rated at the end of the night). Drinks seem cheapish. It's like nothing else in SLC. Everybody seems happy, and despite the amount of alcohol consumed people remain friendly and polite. It's a lot of fun - lots. more

Great place 2/17/2007

I have only been to the Tavernacle a couple of times, but have always enjoyed myself there. The people are friendly and easy to talk to, and they have good food and great live bands. Pros: Great atmosphere, food, bands Cons: Parking can be difficult on weekends more

A bit of insubordination in a town that needs it! 9/29/2006

How do you get better than this place? This club is crowded and fun. Even a smoker like me enjoys this non-smoking club. The dueling piano nights are the best. By the time 11 p.m. rolls around, everyone has had enough booze and enough nostalgic music -- good and bad -- to all be friends. This is one club in SLC that is actually unique. Most people here will end up making wonderful fools of themselves by the end of the eving, singing along to Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi or screaming the words to Sweet Caroline. It is a truly bonding, fun, party without the BS kind of club. Pros: They take reservations for large groups. Membership is cheap! Cons: PARKING in downtown SLC always hurts. more

Can I get a Hooah! 11/20/2005

This was my first visit to a bar since I just turned 21 and a had a killer time with my buddies. The pianos were awesome. The females loved to dance on them (they also enjoyed the dollar bills). I highly recommend this place. Great atmosphere and service. Pros: Service, Cover Charge, Drinks Cons: Parking, Small Bathrooms, No Food more

Best place to get together with friends... 9/26/2005

The Tavernacle is by far the most entertaining bar Salt Lake City has to offer. There is a distinct neighborhood feel to it. The service has always been phenomenal and the staff is friendly, fun, and hardworking...Ben is the best bartender in town and Erin is the best server! And of course, Kirk, Eric, Tara, George, and Troy on the pianos!!! I recommend the Tavernacle to everyone I know and have celebrated my last two birthdays with my friends at the Tavernacle...you'll never have a more entertaining birthday! They are expanding into the shop next door so there will be more room and a second bar coming very soon! Pros: Convenient parking, Great crowd, Not a meet-market more

Good food, good show, not so great service 4/26/2005

That pretty well sums it up. The times I've been to the Tavernacle it has seemed that they do not have enough staff to keep up with a busy crowd. Then the self destructing monster happens. Patrons go to the bar to get their drinks which ties up the bartenders which slows down the waitresses which makes more customers to to the bar and so it goes. The wait was occassionally 10-15 minutes from ordering a drink to getting it. The dueling pianos are great and they have good food but the service has never been impressive. Pros: Good Food, Good Show Cons: Slow Service more

Just what we needed! 1/27/2003

The Tavernacle has brought Salt Lake City just what we needed! A place that we can be comfortable and have a great time. I went for the first time last weekend and just had a blast. I would recommend that you check it out. How much fun did the birthdays have? more

Boring! 10/14/2002

I went to the Tavernacle on a Friday evening with a girlfriend at there was no one there. The people who were there were old yuppie types. The bartender ignored us for about 10 minutes before making two sloppy martinis. I would not recommend this place. There are way better bars than this in Salt Lake. Pros: no smoking Cons: boring, yuppies, bad service more

relaxing fun 10/13/2002

One of the freindliest down to earth club I have ever been to. The piano players are talented freindly, and very entertaing. Tavernacle is a great place to go with a first date or with a group of freinds or even just to wind down. i would recomend the tavernacle to anyone. sincerly ..Jodi more

Great friendly club 10/3/2002

Best new club in SLC for a smoke-free evening of entertainment. This is both a great singles bar, as well as a good place to take your partner, you can actually breath. Susy is the best bartender, and all of the servers are great. If you are looking for an evening of fun, try the Tavernacle you won't be disappointed. Pros: Great Service, Atmosphere, Non smoking more

10 9/15/2002

Great athmosphere, awesome music, good service. Great place to go with a group or have a company party. Pros: easy parking, no smoking, friendly service more

Amateur bartenders 9/14/2002

I was very disappointed with my first (and last) visit to Tavernacle. The bartenders were some of the worst I have seen. I had to place my drink order twice (I was sitting at the bar) and even after the second time, it took another five minutes to get my drink. The bar seemed pretty busy, but not so busy that it should take so long for a drink order to be filled. Pros: entertaining, smoke free, good parking Cons: poor service, unattractive crowd, hit and miss more

Pianists gone crazy (in a good way) 9/5/2002

I love the Tavernacle Bar. Their margaritas with rock salt on the rim of the glass...all I can say is yum! The entertainment is a lot of fun, and between the three singer/pianists I saw, they are able to play darn-near any song you request. What the heck, knock back a few and join in with the singing...that kind of behavior is encouraged. Pros: cosy atmosphere, great entertainment, good drinks more

What a fun friendly club 9/4/2002

My wi fe and I are regular customers of the Tavernacle, and have been since almost the day it first opened. It is just what SLC needed, a clean friendly, NON SMOKING, Club. Pros: NON SMOKING, FRIENDLY SERVERS, FUN ATMOSPHERE Cons: NONE more

Dueling Pianos, and Great People 8/21/2002

This place is a great place to go kick back, have a few drinks and unwind with friends. There are always plenty of attractive people in the bar, and all are very friendly. Not to mention the cool tunes from the "dueling pianos." This place rocks! more

10 Dancing on the Grand Pianos! 8/4/2002

Salt Lake has needed a place like this for years. Small, trendy, fun, high-energy. It seems that all the other clubs that have started up in the last years figure all you need is a big space with room to expand. The only time these monoliths are "hot" is when thier air conditioning units break down. The Tavernacle is my new favorite place and will be for some time. Pros: friendly staff, great parking, non-smoking more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Located in a renovated copy shop along what was once a sleepy downtown block, the Tavernacle is making some noise: drink specials, regular karaoke nights and dueling pianos have made it one of Salt Lake's most crowded nightspots. A friendly staff keeps the cocktails coming, and the bar has emerged as a hot spot for meeting and greeting on weekends.

    The Draw
By its own declaration, it's "the place where everyone else goes to sing." The highlight is you've-got-to-see-them-to-believe-them duelin' piano players (a regular cast of talented, versatile singer-musicians) belting out standards from the '60s to the '90s. A spare live microphone allows for the occasional croon (or squawk) from game audience members and the room has already developed sing-along traditions for "Friends in Low Places" and "Piano Man," among other songs.
