I think the make-up in advanced is great. The make-up lessons have been great as well. We've had a great experience so far and we are happy with the staff and the outcome of our daughters progress. more

I am always happy coming back with my children to Murray Callan Swim Schools. They have learned so much and all they want to do is swim now. It is a great feeling knowing that your children are more confident in themselves. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 8/6/2012

I have full confidence that my daughter would be able to make it to the side of the pool if she were to fall in. Murray Callen Swim School has such a great approach in teaching. The teachers are patient, which helped the kids be more relaxed. more

I can't say enough about the great 6/11/2012

I can't say enough about the great experience we've has here. We know without a doubt, our kids have a great foundation for swimming (and they are 4 and 2) and it will keep getting better. And all the instructors have awesome support with the kids. more

The swim instructors are amazing! Knowledgeable, nice ,patient yet firm. The water temperature encourages the kids to get in and its comfortable for them to stay in. The facility is always super clean and the staff is very friendly. Its such a great feeling knowing that my kid can swim and is water safe. more

I took my son to Murray Callan's for 5/22/2012

I took my son to Murray Callan's for over 6 months and ultimately parted ways in a rather ugly manner. Originally, I wrote a scathing review of the school while I was still quite upset. In retrospect, I think it would be better off if I just give advice on how I think you can get the most out of the school and work with them amicably. Ultimately, my approach ended in frustration and a bitter exit from the school and my son is the one that suffers in the end. My primary gripe with the school was their approach to customer service, particularly as it relates to missed classes. You purchase 8 classes at a time from the school. Those classes run twice a week at a fixed time over the course of four weeks. If you miss one or more classes during that time, you can make up only one of those classes on a friday or saturday. There aren't many makeup slots available and once you schedule one, you cannot reschedule. I think this policy was put in place to try and provide some type of makeup program without it becoming too costly for Murray Callan, but throughout our time there the policy caused a lot of friction. In the end, when my son had to miss classes because of a laceration that required stitches, the interactions I had with the staff and management resulted in us just leaving the school entirely. Angry, I wrote a number of blogs that denigrated the school, which quickly got the managements attention. To their credit, they tried to explain their policies to me, but we continued to disagree and we decided to leave. Also to their credit, they refunded two full sessions worth of tuition, which I did not expect. My advice is this, do not get caught up in the makeup policy. Go in thinking that you're paying for 4 weeks of classes and to reserve that slot 4 weeks at a time. I got too caught up in what I still feel are self-serving policies on their behalf. Based on my experience, those policies are not going to change. But you can be happy at the school if you just accept that you are going to have a lot of missed classes you will never makeup. You can do classes ahead of time, but once again the onus is on you to do it. If you are someone that needs to feel you are getting every minute you've paid for, you are going to be frustrated at times. I just recommend letting it go. Also, engage the teachers and ask about the instruction and your child's progress. The teachers never really filled me on what and why they were doing things, but I think if I had asked, they would have been happy to answer. more

The best out there! 4/30/2012

I would like to start off by saying that Murray Callan Swim School is the best out there! My family and I have been going there for years. They offer a great business to people who want their children to be great, strong swimmers. more

Thank You 4/24/2012

My daughter can now swim across the whole pool on her own. My husband and I are so proud of her and are so happy that we found a place that could teach her that and still make it fun. We say thank you to Murray Callan! more

They've got it right 4/17/2012

It seems like they've got it right. A business that is a staple in the community and has been around forever speaks volumes. The goal is to teach kids -- MCSS has exceeded it. My son Christian is a fish - and he just turned 2 last month. I like knowing he is confident and safe. I am grateful to Rocky and Erin for giving my son this invalueable gift. Keep it up! more

Amazed 4/11/2012

My daughter is almost 3 and has been swimming at Murray Callan for about 2 years. Every time someone sees her in a pool, they are amazed at how well she can swim! She usually (she is 2) loves the lessons, and I have never had a bad experience with anyone - instructor or staff. In fact, it is quite the opposite - everyone is very nice. I'm not sure why so many people below have complained about ""strict"" policies, as they are clearly outlined on the website and have remained consistent. more

Woth every penny 4/29/2011

love this school. it is very expencive but worth every penny our 13 month old loves diving under water for toys and is so relaxed now. more

I'm excited to show my kids off 4/28/2011

I have 2 kids and they came to Murray Callan 8 months ago with very little swimming experience. We tried other schools but we finally found the right one. Over the past 8 months, my kids have become extremely comfortable with the water and are learning to swim the long way across the pool. I can?t believe how much they have learned. I know that the instructors and the very warm water have helped them advance so quickly. We are getting ready for their spring break from school and I am so excited for them to show off their new skills in the water. more

After just a few lessons, she was floating with her face in 4/25/2011

I had watched my daughter struggle with swimming lessons, and even water on her face, since she was a baby. About 6 months ago, my neighbor told me how happy she was taking her kids to MCSS - I told myself, ""let's give it one more shot."" Good thing I did. After just a few lessons, she was floating with her face in the water, eyes open! Now she dives in and swims almost the entire length of the pool like it's no big deal. Her teachers have worked wonders and I thank this school everyday for the gift they have given us. Their background really pays off in dealing with all kids, even those with phobias. I'm so glad I didn't give up on my daughter ... but mostly I'm glad I found the most successful swimming school in the area. Keep up the great work. more

My son's a dolphin now! 4/22/2011

Thank you, Murray Callan, for giving my son the gift of swim and giving Meg and me the comfort of knowing he?s at ease in the water, because of your instruction. He?s now a dolphin I can?t catch in the pool. more

A positive instructional environment 4/20/2011

My daughter completed her swimming instruction at your Pacific Beach facility and I have the following comments to make regarding our experience with the Murray Callan Swim School: We experienced a positive instructional environment. My daughter?s instructor was very well versed on teaching youngsters how to feel comfortable in the water and quickly put her at ease. Her instruction quickly began to bear fruit and my daughter actually learned how to become pool safe and then learned how to swim. She now swims very well and is comfortable in pools, the ocean or San Diego Bay. I thank you for your role in taking my daughter from a non-swimmer who was afraid of water to a proficient swimmer with no fear of the water. My daughter?s instructor was well trained and the water was warm and facilitated a positive learning environment. She had a maximum of 3 students in her group and the hours we selected for her instruction were flexible and reasonable. The pricing was fair and reasonable. In summary, I thank you Murray Callan Swim School for the service you provided my family and my daughter in particular. more

What they offer surpasses their competition 4/19/2011

I started my 2 kids awhile back and we all love the lessons so much. I have told friends and neighbors alike, some have started and others are planning on it. I just think that what they offer surpasses their competition. It is so refreshing to see such a dedicated family of three generations so involved with the parents, swim instructors, and students. They definitely take pride in their family business and in creating safe swimmers! more

A great place for swim lessons 4/18/2011

This is a great place to take your kids for swim lessons. My family and I went on a vacation before the New Year and the kids went swimming in the pool. People around us were so amazed by how great our kids were at swimming. The were swimming back and forth across the pool like it was nothing. more

Over 60 years Experience in Swim Instruction and Public Education

Owner Message
 •
Our program was founded by United States Swim School Association Hall of Fame Member Murray Callan and we instruct ages 3 months through adults. We have an individualized program with never more than three students per instructor. We have one-on-one rotation instruction and, as a result, each student will progress at their own rate.

We have very warm 93o water, which creates a very relaxing, enjoyable teaching and learning atmosphere. Our swim schools are open year-round; our pristine facilities are indoors.

We utilize a soft-touch technique, developed by Murray Callan over the last 60 years, which has been very successful for us; it is based on a Soft-Touch, No-Fear method.

Our pools have a lot of shallow water and are custom-designed strictly for teaching swimming and that's all they are used for. Our pools have broad, shallow steps, all the way up to just a few inches in depth so anyone, any age, can seek their own security level by getting their feet on the bottom.

We feel that with all those qualities combined, we have the best teaching aquatic environment anywhere.

The lessons themselves are a half-hour in length and run on a twice-a-week basis year-round, for the first time in our 35 year history. The schedule choices are either Monday-Wednesday, Tuesday-Thursday, or Friday-Saturday. Our facilities are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 in the morning until 12:40 and then again from 2:20 in the afternoon until 7:00 pm. The last class of the evening starts at 6:30. Our Saturday hours are 8:00 until 12:40 only. We charge for a series of 8 half-hour lessons, which on a twice-per week basis will take four weeks to complete. The cost of lessons is $136 for a series of 8 lessons: a second child in the same family costs $5.00 less at $131. There are no enrollment or registration fees, therefore we only accept cash or checks.

We suggest visiting our facilities during our open hours. Potential customers can walk out onto our pool deck unannounced, sit down and observe classes, and if there are any questions at that point, feel free to stop by the front desk and ask. When you are ready to enroll, either give us a call or come down in person and we will try to formalize a schedule that will be convenient for you.

All children under the age of 2 must have an adult in the pool with them. All children under the age of 4, even if they are potty trained, must wear two, snug-fitting, non-disposable swim diapers or swim pants.

Again, please remember we offer a 2-day-per-week schedule year-round.
.
