Hidden Treasure.. Great Indian food, great service 9/27/2011

This by far is one of the best Indian restaurant in my opinion. Great family restaurant. I pulled up list of items to order from the list provided by my friend when i went there and could not thank him enough that he recommended this place. we ordered Pondicherry Masala Dosa, Veg Utapam ( i think thats how it is spelled), Palak Paneer and Kids Idly dosa combo. Everything was delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone without any hesitation. Servers were awesome and checked with us multiple times. Great experience. I will definitely go there again. more

Best Indian restaurant in Denver - Hands down !! 8/31/2011

I loved the different flavor. My boy friend and i went on a Thursday evening and this place was packed. After having their Thursday evening buffet, now I know why this place is so popular. I love meat but once you eat here, you dont really miss meat in your meal. Restaurant is entirely vegetarian. Had no idea vegetarian food could be so good. Definitely going again and again. !! more

Love It. Most Authentic South Indian Food 4/15/2011

I have lived and worked in in India (Chennai and Banglore) for over 2 years. Masalaa provides most authentic south indian food. I love their Dosas. A must visit restaurant in the country. If you live here in Denver and have not visited Masalaa, you dont know what you are missing. If you are visiting Denver and you like Indian food, you HAVE TO try Masalaa. more

Simly Awesome 4/8/2011

All i could say after coming out of this restaurant was ""simply awesome"". Couldnt imagine how such a small joint tucked in a small strip mall in Aurora can provide such awesome food and excellent service. I am so glad i listened to my friend's recommendation to try this restaurant. I loved this place. service was definitely worth mentioning. Folks were going extra mile to ensure customers were taken care of. In Summary, Masalaa is simply AWESOME !! more

Beware of Double Tip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/9/2010

I went to this restaurant few times and they hand over a bill with no details and unfilled tip column.Of course i entered about 10% for the tip and signed the bill and was about to leave the place but i was a bit surprised of the bill amount. Finally i asked for a details bill and was surprised that they already charged me 15% hidden tip and i was paying 10% additional all this time.. Bottom line, Ask for a detailed bill before you sign the bill next time.. Greedy people!! more

Great food, horrid service. 12/5/2008

We visited Masalaa about a month ago with our kids. First off, the food was delicious, but not very filling. We felt that for the price, we should have been given more. The kids menus are a joke, they're about as much as a not very hungry 3 or 4 year old would eat. If your child is older than that, do yourself a favor and just order the adult portion which doesn't cost that much more. The kids really loved the food, my son though his mountain dosa was really cool, but there just wasn't enough for the children's portions. That being said, the food was still wonderful and fresh tasting, but we think we'll order some sides or appetizers next time. \r \r The service was probably the worst I've ever had anywhere and I've eaten as some hole in the wall places. We went on a Friday night about 7:30, we figured we'd have to wait for a little bit, but ended up waiting about 45 minutes to be seated and watched about 3 other couples/families that had come in after us, be seated before us. While waiting I watched a man who had ordered take out have his order literally dropped in his lap and was ignored when he asked about a bag that he had set down somewhere and couldn't find. The waiters/hosts working there seemed very irritated and were borderline rude to us. We waited another 30 minutes to have our order taken, and our food took another 30 minutes. Needless to say by the time our food actually got there our kids were practically falling asleep. The menu itself isn't very descriptive so if you don't know what something is, it's like taking a shot in the dark. I suggest reading up on items before going there if you're not familiar with south Indian cuisine.\r \r The only real saving grace of this restaurant is that the food is unique in Denver and tasty. We want to try the lunch buffet, without the kids, before we completely say no. Pros: Tasty, unique food. Only south Indian cuisine in Denver that I know of. Cons: Abysmal service. Maybe just get carry out and save yourself the tip money. more

Used to be great, not so much anymore 4/28/2007

In Denver we have a huge selection of North Indian cuisine, but for years we have not had much selection for good south Indian cuisine. North Indian usually consists of the spicy curries that we are all familiar with and those lovely Tandoori items like Nan and Chicken Ticca, but South Indian cuisine usually consists of dosas, which are large rolls of rice flour and are stuffed with a variety of vegetables and/ or meats. Despite the fact that my family is from North India, we love South Indian food and we were ecstatic when we heard about Masalaa in 2000. Initially, the restaurant had great food, decent service, and a wonderful atmosphere. In later years as Massala's popularity grew the restaurant expanded and even won the ""Best Indian Restaurant in Denver"" from 5280 magazine in 2004. However, the quality of the establishment has deteriorated rapidly in the last few years. A few weeks ago my friends and I headed there for dinner and the place was pretty busy when we got there. Nevertheless, we were seated promptly and given menus. A busboy walked past and put down a jug of water, I guess you now have to fill your own water. :-( Another 15 minutes passed before we got a glimpse of server and we ordered. It took the server, 15 more minutes to get me a coke and our paneer pakoras took over 35 minutes, yes 35 minutes! Our main dishes took over an hour! When we asked our server about the food, he responded angrily that they are coming and would be here soon. After getting the paneer pakoras he threw the basket in the middle and walked away and the same was done with our plates. The food was good and had nice spice. The paneer pakoras were soft and fresh and had a nice spicy orange sauce on the inside. My plain dosa tasted excellent and went well with the Narial (Coconut Chutney). For desert we ordered gulab jamun, but they were horrible. The food at Masalaa is good, but the horrendous service ruins it. Pros: good food, ambinance Cons: horrible service, restaurant is small more

WHAT A JOKE!!! 12/9/2006

Called for a party order for 20 people and said I gotta call some dude named Ashok and 303-506-0798...what a joke?? Its funny, when I go to this place I feel like I'm in India.... You'll get treated like you are in India, with an attitude, tone and get the monkey off your back concept. DO NOT GO THERE... I don't understand; why are indian businesses so rude? Are they depressed all the time or something???\r \r MERA BHARAT MAHAN... Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

Very very good food. Highly recommended. 10/8/2006

I have been to many places in USA as my job is consulting and get to travel around quite a bit. I can tell you this place is really great. Food is probably one of the best Indian food you can find in USA. Quality of the food is always consistent. Highly recommended. Whether you want to just order an item from the menu or whether you want to try their buffet, you will not be disappointed. Very authentic Food. Good job and keep it up. Pros: Authentic Food Cons: when it is very busy, service is little bit affected. more

Downhill....going, that is - going, going, soon will be gone! (Part One of Two) 8/17/2006

What can I say about my last couple of experiences. I thought I would give Masalaa another try and went to lunch yesterday with a friend. Walked into the restaurant. Was greeted by the manager/supervisor with a feeble attempt at a smile. Like the last time, we were not offered a menu, though all we wanted as a masala dosa. The manager insisted that the buffet would be the best choice, though we were not in the mood to eat a heavy meal. Dosa is included in the meal, he added. ANd this happened during a prior visit as well. We picked our own table and sat down. Water was not served, rather there were a couple of steel cups with a pitcher of water. So be prepared to pour your own water. \r \r So we checked out the buffet line. Looked interesting. Large idlies that had dried out in the heat of the warmer that looked far from appetizing. A couple of vegetarian curries, biryani, plain rice, rasam sambar, fried bread (small bhatura triangles). The cold section looked unappetizing from the start. Masalaa - a word of adive, you don;t need to serve a salad if you DON'T KNOW how to. A bowl of a lettuce salad, looking sad and brown, a couple of chutneys, tamarind and mint chutneys, curd rice, and some king of kheer. \r \r I did sample a little bit of everything. I will not say all the food was bad. The good items were the Potato 65, the rasam (hot and spicy), an onion masala curry, and a south indian style kootu with coconut. The others were average to below average. The veggie biryani was terrible, sambar was average, a couple of other veggies below average.\r \r Now Masalaa has also changed their plates - they have moved to thalis without any cups. Now everytime you want a refill of an item, ""you can take another plate"", the manager said. So if I want just a refill of a curry, I have to take an extra plate, rather than serving myself a smaller portion in a cup.\r \r (My review continues - read Part Two of Two)\r Pros: Hmm, I am thinking, give me a few weeks to think about this one! Cons: Service more

Consistently Poor Service 5/30/2006

Several negative experiences in a row - Quality of food has declined considerably. Several times, we were served food that wasn't warm enough. Managerial and serving staff were very unfriendly except for one short-statured South Indian gentleman who was quite nice. Several times, we were denied help with dividing up our food. We asked for aloo chat, and were given the filling for masaalaa dosa (essentially aloo sabzi). The Thursday night buffet seemed more like a collection of left-overs and stale food rather than a freshly cooked meal. We were still eating (around 9:50 p.m.!), and the lights in one area of the restaurant were switched off indicating that we had to leave. The overall attitude of the staff seemed to reflect that they were doing us a favor by serving us. I love South Indian food, but will probably just learn how to cook it instead of going back. Pros: Parking Cons: Service more

Never to Return 1/28/2006

This restaurant was a let down. Let me preface my review by saying the food was good. Being from the southern region of India myself, I was very disappointed with the service that was offered. Upon entrance there was no greeting or direction as to where to go. My group was eventually escorted to a table and seated without menus and still no greeting. After waiting for several minutes, I ventured to the front in hopes of getting menus and pricing for the buffet. Needless to say, this was indicative of the rest of the experience. Servers came and picked up plates still being worked on without a word, requests for napkins were never fulfilled and even though two people in our group ordered from the menu no one came to check on the satisfaction of their selections. The food could not makeup for what the service and ambience lacked. Pros: food, parking, not crowded Cons: unfriendly, ambience, poor service more

Authentic Indian Food and Awesome Service 7/3/2005

Great Indo-chinese Items as well. Try it to believe it. Pros: Authentic, Inexpensive, Great Service Cons: only two branches more
