I was massively disappointd in our medium-sized ordinary American cake for $57. The cake tasted good, but no better than cakes my mother has made, and it was an utterly ordinary cake and icing thing. I've had luscious, wonderful cakes with interesting combinations of ingredients that an ordinary home cook couldn't make, from the now-defunct Pastry Designs, and I don't remember that they cost as much as this one. Also, our cake was ugly--as I recall they suggested red lettering for a brown (chocolate) cake, and it was discordant and dreary. For almost $60, including an extra cost for "decoration," I think they should offer some expertise in the appearance of the thing. Good old Balducci's has pretty nice French-style cakes and they're only $30. Maybe Just Cakes is OK for a single cupcake snack and for, say, wedding cakes, because they seem able to engineer superstructures, but I wasn't impresssed with ours except by the price.
