I never would have guessed that yoga in the water would prove to be simultaneously the easiest and most challenging form I have ever practiced. Easy for several reasons: The warm water feels cocoon-like and comforting in a way that I am certain is connected to some deep, visceral memory of being in the womb. Being buoyant and weightless in the pool gives me a confidence I have always lacked to some degree in traditional land-based yoga, which I feel allows me to let go and get deeper into my practice. On top of this, the instructor, Sue, is easily one of the most positive, supportive yoginis I have had the pleasure of studying with. She sets the tone for the class and always makes me feel as though I can push myself to my personal limit in a safe environment. Lest I give the impression that this is effortless, I want to talk about the challenging part. Being in the water means I am engaging my core in a way I have never had to do with other forms of exercise, including Pilates. This is something you feel in a big way after your first few classes, but the benefits are many. My body feels stronger, my back feels less stressed, and my abs are thanking me. The only downside is I now have to go and spend some money on new jeans! more
