Best Restaurant in LA 10/3/2010

From the moment you walk in you feel like your entering japan... Amazing zen garden/koi pond.. The food was really really good... I would recommend the crispy tuna tower, ebi shinjo (shrimp dumpling-friter), tuna tostada & the yellowtail carpaccio special are all great for apps. Then for main course the whole seabass sukiyaki was the best fish I've ever had. Anything is amazing there.. I've been to gonpachi tons of times and I always leave with a smile and a happy belly.. That staff is very friendly. They have the best happy hr EVERYDAY, $3 Japanese beer (18oz) and food and drink specials.. Try it, they will not let you down!! more

The Place to Go! 4/23/2010

The food was exceptional! Everything tasted good and came out pretty quick. We had a tuna tostada appetizer that was excellent, it was spicy tuna mix with home cut sweet potato fries that you scoop the tuna mix up with. The grilled black cod was amazing, and the cold soba noodles were made fresh right in front of us. Our server was great, her name was Debbie. The whole staff was friendly, we even met the chef. I'll be back to try the all you can eat deal. Pros: Atmosphere is straight out of Japan more

feels like I'm in Tokyo 8/3/2009

Since I used to go to Gonpachi in Tokyo all the time, this place makes me feel like I'm in my hometown. I come here every other week, and eat at sushi bar since I am a big sushi fan (no Americanized rolls for me though... I go for the traditional nigiri!). I usually order the Omakase so that I get the best fish of the day and add a few Kushiyaki (skewers) because they are not ignorable. Tsukune and Enoki maki are my favorites!\r Although this place does make those Americanized sushi rolls, this place serves a very traditional Japanese food. Sushi, the edo-mae style, Kushi-yaki on a Sumi (charcoal?), and their daily handmade Soba. I cannot go home without finishing my dinner with their super delicious pumpkin zenzai. I could eat that everyday! Unbeliably affordable for a Japanese restaurant with such great food and decor. Pros: Great Sushi and Kushiyaki. Never forget the pumpkin zenzai! more

Beautiful Restaurant 3/3/2009

The restaurant is a work of art. I only wish that the food was just as good, didn't live up to the decor. When we arrived, the hostess showed us 3 tables for us to select. It was like she was a realtor showing us houses, one with a view of the kitchen, one in a quiet corner, etc. We sat down and asked for something special. We got a couple of sushi rolls that were not what we had in mind, but ate them anyway. Is it because this place is in Beverly Hills? We didn't think that the food matched the decor. Our friends from Chicago will be visiting us soon and would like to bring them, maybe we didn't order properly. What is the thing to eat here? Thank you. Pros: Beautiful restaurant more

Actually, they ARE open for lunch! 2/6/2009

Amazing space, amazing food, great service. The red dragon roll is out of this world, with three colorful varieties of caviar highlighting a beautifully presented dish. Lunch service just started in late January, they had never been open for lunch before, so I don't know where the repvious reveiw got his info. The lunch menu is an incredible value: tons of top notch food at half of what you'd pay elsewhere on restaurant row. Pros: Free parking at lunch with validation. Amazing setting. Incredible food. Cons: It's a hidden jewel and sometimes hard to spot. more

Gorgeous Location and Setting 1/21/2009

This place is gorgeous and completely out of place on La Cienaga boulevard. The first thing you'll think when you walk in is ""I can't afford this."" But the prices weren't terrible, considering that the food is pretty darn great, it's located in an expensive area, and the ambiance is the best. Seriously, it is a beautiful building, which I was told cost over $18 Million to build. Just don't expect a ""Japanese fusion"" restaurant, most of the dishes were pretty traditional, with great presentation. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and service was friendly. Pros: WOW what a building more

CLOSED FOR LUNCH! 12/12/2008

Since when did they close for lunch? Had a client that wanted to go where they filmed the movie and the GD place was CLOSED! What's up with that? We ended up going across the street and had a very nice lunch. Pros: Parking lot Cons: Closed for lunch more

Great atmosphere, food and service. Rare find in LA. 10/2/2008

Food and service were great. The Garden was serene and relaxing. The interior made you feel like you were in the restaurant where the filmed the ""Klll BILL"". We liked it so much we are going back again on Sunday. more

Paying for Location and Ambience and NOT THE FOOD 7/31/2008

We went on a Wednesday night expecting great service & food. The waitress was rude and the food was terrible. We ordered off of their Sample Tasting Menu which consisted of their FAMOUS Skewers and Sushi. Their Sushi was very fishy (only ate 3 pieces) and the skewers were salty. The Soba noodles tasted like any other soba noodles out there. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone and it is not worth going for just the ambience. Pros: Ambience and Parking Cons: FOOD more

Beautiful!! Delicious and elegant! 7/5/2008

I love this place. The docor is amazing. The food is exceptional. The best Japanese food in town. I love sitting in the bar. It is right next to this beautiful peaceful little courtyard. I love the spicy tuna on crispy rice. more

BEAUTIFUL LOUNGE & BAR 6/11/2008

I went in to watch the Laker's Game and was so impressed by the lounge. Open bar overlooking the koi fish pond. Big red comfortable lounge chairs. 2 wide screen flat panel t.v.'s and the happy hour food/drinks were awesome, and inexpensive! Very chic yet comfortable atmosphere. Pros: HAPPY HOUR!!!!! more

Do they all think Yoshinoya is standard for Japanese food 4/16/2008

What are all these people thinking when they give these ratings. I've traveled to Japan on many occasions, tried suppose best Japanese restaurants all over USA & Europe and Gonpachi is equivalent of of Denny's in Japanese. Sure they have beautiful setting but everything after that it's a miserable failure. I've dine at Gonapchi 4 times last year and swore I would never be back but after reading all these glorious reviews I decided to give them a another shot. I think all these reviews are written by employees of Gonapchi or all these people have no idea what they talking about when it comes to Japanese food. They serve bad quality, bad tasting, badly prepared food in bad presentation. They do not know how to combine flavors or texture to save their lives. I think monkey could do a better job of coming up with menu that makes sense. Service is lacking in care, politeness, timing and attitude. Decor is still nice but their decision to close the upstairs due to lack of business has ruin even the atmosphere. There are many good quality Japanese restaurants with good & service so why would anyone care to go to Gonapchi is a mystery. Pros: plenty of parking and tables Cons: everything else more

Love love! 4/4/2008

I think this restaurant is beautiful and actually really delicious...it feels like you are on a movie set as soon as you walk through the gates outside...I've only just gone for my first time but I will absolutely go again. more

Great food 3/23/2008

I love gonpachi's food and its ambience. It is just too beautiful to be true. I went there 4 times in 2 months and I will definitely go back. If their servants can be more responsive, i would rate it as a 5 star restaurant. more

Go for the 1. Decor (Best experience) 2. Food (cooked TRADITIONAL AUTHENTIC JAPANESE CUISINE) 2/23/2008

Beautifil decor, from the zen garden to the bathrooms!! The sink is gorgeous!! To the third level more intimate dining.. I just went last night (Saturday) and I though the place was wonderful! I love that they found a way to mingle a tri-level and equivalent target audience. There is space for families (kid friendly) to have a nice dinner, the bar is perfect for dates or singles, the third level has two private rooms ideal for business and surrounding tables overlooking the second level for dates or friends. The maitre'd came to our table because our friend, a chef from Vegas was there and he explained every dish, told us wonderful background info and introduced all the wonderful waistaff. I truly enjoyed tonight! I wish I remembered all the names of the dishes because I can't wait to go back. Please do try this place if you want to feel transported to Tokyo and enjoy a satisfying meal! Soba noodles are AWESOME!!!! Pros: Food, decor, crowd Cons: I realized I couldn't live there..lol more
