Wonderful food, lame service 2/3/2012

The food is fantastic, and the the location can't be beat--on the west side of slc, emerging like a jewel in the darkness. But I have been there twice in the last week taking out of town job candidates out for dinner. The first time they brought out two orders of scallops even though we ordered shrimp. We took it anyway to make things easier on the waitress, but thought an effort should have been made to make it worth it. The next time we had 9 instead of 7 people show up and the waitress and manager were so visibly annoyed that everyone at the table felt guilty--a bad way to start a meal. But the food is really very good. more

The best new place in SLC 11/12/2010

When my husband and I were told about Frida Bistro buy the concierge, he said: drive down 7th south west until you think there is no way you are in the right place. Then go 1 more block. He was right! All of a sudden this 3 story tall banner of Frida Bistro and windows with neon lights beckoned us! The host greeted us in a black suit and tie, was VERY congenial and pulled out my chair when I sat. This is no ordinary Mexican restaurant, it has beautiful pieces of art on the walls, no bright maracas, blankets or big hats. But a beautiful wine list and really different food. The margaritas were awesome and had ingredients like fresh Pineapple & cilantro, Blood Orange & cinnamon and actually tasted like they had alcohol in them! I had the tuna which was rolled in 5 chiles and seared. It was perfect. Delicate and gorgous to look at. My husband had the Steak, Ribeye in a rich hibiscus, pepper sauce with a chorizo potato. Everything was dead on! Our server new the wine list and brought over the Manager/Sommelier to talk about pairing and her ""secret ""list. We then were treated to a tour of the factory behind the place that makes mexican food for grocery stores! Just a great night all around. Thanks Frida for making us fall in love. more

Seriously Amazing food! 11/11/2010

We walked in on a Thursday night and the place was hopping! Which was such a surprise since it seemed like such an out of the way place! The Manager greeted us and walked us to a table near the open kitchen which was beautiful. We ordered the blue corn calamari and it was fabulous! Cooked to tender but not past. My friend tried the Shrimp dish and the sauce it was in-a manchego Chipotle concoction was incredibly tasty. And I have to admit I enjoyed the cactus pad that came with it too even if she was a little scared. My duck came with a fabulous mole and was (for the first time in a long while) cooked correctly! The kitchen staff was interesting to watch as they weren't yelling and making a lot of noise and they worked together well. The server was knowledgeable about wine, tequila and the culture. The food was timely and well-portioned. I have not had Mexican food like this anywhere. Congrats Salt Lake for stepping into the real culinary world! more

Sophisticated Mexican Food that Cannot be found anymore Else 10/11/2010

I could eat at Frida Bistro every day. It is an amazing place where one can find sophisticated Mexican food. Their business lunch is only $12.00 and you can go in and out in 45 minutes. Thanks for a great spot for lunch!! I love it. more

Overrated, overpriced, mediocre food 8/30/2010

We were disappointed by this restaurant- I had a reservation for 7:45PM on Monday night, and once we were ready to order, we asked about an item on the ""small plates"" section called 'Esquite'. Our waitress described it and we were considering ordering it, but no sooner did she finish describing it than she said ""we're out of it"". I was quite disappointed since I think that for a restaurant to run out of a dish at 8PM on a Monday night just reeks of bad planning in the kitchen. In addition, the meals were overpriced, quite insipid, and served ""at room temperature""- while I don't like food that is boiling hot, I do not like warm entrees to be cold/ lukewarm. @ glasses of wine, 2 entrees and a kids quesadilla cost us $76, and at the end of it, I didn't even feel satisfied. I will not go back there again.\r more
