Best

Chose Duke City at random after I found out my first choice was booked-up six weeks out. Started feeling uneasy when I later read other reviews, but it was too late by that time....

Worst

What started as something good, turned out to be something really bad. They were on time, but that was the best thing about the experience. I was quoted 3 guys for a 2 hour mini...

Editorial review from Citysearch 10/8/2012

Make sure to get your quote in writing! i was quoted $119 for 4men with a 3 hr minimum. Richard Moya and his crew showed up with 5men. I figured he would have told me if he was going to charge me more, but he mentioned he over booked and had to get the job done fast, hence why he brought 5 men. They finished in an hour, and he asked me ""do you want us to start assembling things"" i said ""oh you do that"" he said ""yes, you are paying for at least 3 hrs so use us while you can"" so they did two bed and started working on a crib. they needed a screw i didnt have so i sent my dad to the store to get it. as soon as my dad left, rich said ""ok can we go"" i had told him my dad just left to get the screw they needed. he said he neded to go move a federal judge and needed to go. so he brought me the bill, for $600!!! i was expecting to pay $357. when i questioned him, he said it was because i had 5 men, which i DID NOT request nor did he tell me he was going to charge me extra, he charged me for stairs. I told him he never told me there was an extra charge for stairs. He even charged me for assembly! he had just told me 20 mins earlier it was included. i told him i was not going to pay that cause thats not what i was quoted. He started to tell me that karma will come back to get me and that my house was nothing, that he needed to get to his big jobs, his federal judge. He said he was old and he didnt have time to argue with me because i was negative. said that i want everything for nothing. i said, if you wouldve told me you were going to charge me for all this i wouldve hired someone else. he kept telling me, he had bigger jobs than mine adn that i deserve bad karma. i ended up paying him $500 with a check and he told me ""if this is a bad ck, just remember, im on my way to move a federal judge"" i told him not to treat me like a criminal. I felt forced to pay, I was by myself, with 5 men at my house. and knowing that they know where i live, i didnt want to put myself in danger. so i paid him $500 and told him i will dispute it. I have since filed a complaint with the BBB requesting a refund more

Painless move 5/14/2011

Chose Duke City at random after I found out my first choice was booked-up six weeks out. Started feeling uneasy when I later read other reviews, but it was too late by that time. I have say, they made a potentially difficult move...painless!!!! I had some odd stuff to transport; an antique electric printing press that wieghs 400lbs, an old motorcycle, some ancient photographic equipment. As a lot of the equipment is a big part of how I make my living, I was pretty stressed out. They were fast and everying arrived intact and functioning. The three guys were really understanding and worked with me all the way. I can't give them a 5-star , because the rate was reasonable...not super-cheap. more

should have read the reviews first..... 6/4/2010

After viewing what a wanted moved and knowing exactly where I was moving too (owner said he's moved people there before), I was given an estimate. I specifically told him I couldn't go over a certain amount. He said no problem. After the move was complete, the owner presented me with a bill that was $200.00 higher than my estimate. He said it was due to a couple of little steps on the path to my apt..He also stood there and straight out lied that he never gave me the lower quote. I ended up giving him only $50.00 dollars over that lower quote and I kick myself now for even doing that. So...CHECK THE REVIEWS before u hire anyone. I'm surprised how companies like this stay in business in this city because word gets around quick. I just feel sorry for his workers - he probably treats them like he treats his customers. Pros: workers worked hard and did a good job Cons: didn't honor estimate / owner lied about estimate more

The Worst 9/8/2009

The worst ever. Damaged furniture, including LCD TV. Charged almost double the quote. Did not return a chair which they broke the leg off .They took it to have it fixed last Nov 2009, no chair returned to a new DR set as of Sept 2009. Broke the knobs off the dryer, we had to buy a new one. Dents to walls of the new home and the home we moved from. Boxes labeled FRAGILE were turned upside down (numerous boxes). Broken dishes, and more... Will not return phone calls. This one willl be in small claims court. May file charges for stealing the chair to our DR set. Pros: Not Professional at all. If you use you will lose. Cons: charged double the quote, drinking alcohol... more

Poor Quality Service 7/28/2009

I am sorely disappointed in these guys. Although they were very nice working with us in the beginning, they damaged our furniture. The head mover told the owner that he did not do it so the owner tried to compromise with us and get the gouges fixed. After months of waiting it was returned to us in worse condition then when it came. When I called the owner to complain he said too bad that's all you get. I will not call them again and do not recommend them to anyone. In fact I would like to know who to call to report these guys. My family and I are not rich but we save and save to buy good furniture and they carelessly ruined ours. I think that the owner should look for someone else to hire. Cause his workers obviously lie to him. Pros: CHeeap Cons: careless more

NIGHTMARE!!!!! 9/22/2008

I was quoted a price of $632.00. When the guys arrived, after an hour I was told that they needed to get another truck. During the move, they damaged the archway to my front door (my house was less than 6 months old) and ripped my brand new $600 mattress. After the move was completed, they charged me $1500!!!! When asked why, they said it was because of the second truck. I was specifically told that there would not be an additional charge for the truck.I tried disputing the charge, but they produced a forged signature on a written quote that was NEVER provided to me. I called 12 times and I was given 5 dates and times when they would show up to assess the damage. I took time off from work and they NEVER SHOWED UP OR CALLED! It's been 5 months and still, they have not tried to rectify the problem! Cons: The number listed is a cell phone. The owner is extremely rude. more

Bad experience, beware! 10/1/2007

What started as something good, turned out to be something really bad. They were on time, but that was the best thing about the experience. I was quoted 3 guys for a 2 hour minimum. Four guys showed up and one of them stood around most of the time. They over charged me by about $100.00 and broke a book shelf and a cabinet. I had to fight for the refund which I eventually got, but it was like pulling teeth...argueing all the way. Beware of this company. What look professional is not always the case... Pros: They answer the phone. Cons: The service leave something to be desired. more

Beware- overworked staff, poor administration, innacurate estimates, 9 1/2 hours late... 6/16/2007

Terrible, unfortunate experience with Duke City Movers, though at least they didn't break anything. The movers showed up 9 1/2 hours late to start; I called them half an hour after their scheduled arrival time and they had no record of me or my impending move! Not something you want to hear when all of your stuff is packed and you are ready to go. I had communicated with them a couple times about the move in the preceding week, so I can't imagine what happened.\r \r By the time the crew arrived they were in a bad mood and obviously overworked and tired. I was worried for their safety as well as that of my furniture and valuables.\r \r Also, the ""estimate"" wound up being less than 1/2 of the eventual price asked for upon completion of the move, and I don't have an inordinate or abnormal amount of stuff.\r \r To top things off, I was assured I would hear from a manager asap who would listen to my concerns, and I have yet to receive any phone call. I recommend avoiding Duke City Movers. Pros: the movers, though obviously exhausted, did eventually move my stuff Cons: too many to list in this small section more
