Visit the home of a patriot and founder of Alexandria 6/24/2005

This 1753 home was built by John Carlyle, a Scottish merchant and entreprenurial risk-taker who made great contributions to what would become the United States. He persevered through many difficulties and personal tragedies, including the deaths of two wives in childbirth and the deaths of seven of his 11 children. His commitment to public service -- as a trusteee of the city of Alexandria, as a just of the peace, and as a member of the militia -- have had a lasting impact on generations of Americans. The Carlyle House was the center of social and political life in Alexandria in the mid-1700's. It became a foothold in history when British General Edward Braddock made the mansion his headquarters in 1755 and held a summit of colonial governors to plan the early campaigns of the French and Indian War.
