Better Than Expected 1/14/2012

My husband and I recently ate here for our anniversary and also walked around to tour the hotel after dinner. I was expecting the typical higher dollar restaurant experience but was pleasantly surprised. I thought Capitol Grille felt like a smaller dining room yet still polished and elegant. Our server was very attentive and professional. I had the onion bisque for the first course and it was likely the best soup I've ever had. I had the pork chops for the main course and they were also good but somewhat tough. I enjoyed the best dessert I've ever had my entire life - the coconut cake. It was exceptional and different than any other. I agree with another reviewer who stated they'd like to take the pastry chef home to live with them. Overall great food, great service, and an interesting place to go if you want to try something different for a special occasion. more

well 6/19/2010

Food is good, servings are slight, staff is arrogant and I overheard them bickering over a table because they knew the party was a big tipper... tacky\r and they have roaches the size of my foot... Pros: beautiful edifice Cons: stuffy atmosphere and arrogant waitstaff more

Classy but Lacking 3/1/2010

The atomsphere here is excellent! Unfortunately I picked the wrong thing to eat for every course except dessert. If you are a scallops fan though- you probably would have really enjoyed what I ordered. The creme brulee was the highlight for me and also the great wine list! For an added perk, Gweneth Paltrow was there the same night. On the downside, our server was very awkward and really didn't sell the menu like I hoped. I had never been and wanted a little bit more guidance and explanation than he was able to give. Also another server there looked like she had just rolled out of bed. When I go to a upscale restaurant like this I want servers to match. Maybe it was because we were there on a Sunday and they were very slow but I was just not at all impressed with the service. I would have really just called this dinner experience a disaster if it hadn't been for the fabulous dessert and who I was spending a relaxing Sunday night with. I will probably try this place out again sometime but not anytime soon I'm sure but I would recommend this restaurant to someone looking for a romantic meal. Pros: Atomsphere- very romantic, Wine List Cons: Service- some servers did not suit the environment more

Almost good 1/28/2009

I took my sister, who is in culinary school, in hopes of offering her a taste of high end southern cuisine. The abiance was very old-school southern with peachy brochade and heavy carving. Check. The service was fabulous. check. Unfortnately , the food *could* have been great but it was seriously lacking in salt. Now, I hate salty cooking. I rarely add salt in my own, personal, home cooking. But a little salt is rather important. You might counter, ""well then, why not add your own salt"". Ah, I would have *if * salt had been provided, but the chef was not intending his diners to add their own salt for salt was not on the tables. The desserts, however, were fabulous - beautiful, interesting and just the right amount of heavy. We wanted to bundle up the pastry chef and take them home with us. Pros: fabulous desserts, expert service, good for low-sodium eaters Cons: food a little lacking, value more

Delicious 8/22/2008

This is a first class place. The food is consistently good. I would recommend to anyone... nothing scary here just all-american food. more

Amazing Tasting Menu 2/17/2008

I decided to take my girlfriend out to dinner since we didn't get to see each other on Valentine's Day due to me being a line cook. I chose this restaurant based on everything I have heard and read about it. i wanted to experience everything the restaurant had to offer, so i requested a tasting menu. This was the best decision i could have made. Every course of the 9 that we had was fantastic. It included such items as Foie gras mousee, veal tongue, burgundy truffles, sweet breads, and various emulsions. My girlfriend is pretty picky, and with all of organ meat on the menu i thought she would not enjoy the meal, but from the amuse bouche on she continued eating. that just goes to show that the chefs here are top notch. If you can get a normally picky eater to eat bluefin tuna toro, veal sweetbreads, and veal tongue, you know you are doing something right. our server was amazing and extremely knowledgeable. overall the experience was amazing. Pros: Everything Cons: nothing. we were treated like royalty more

A Valentine NOT to remember. 2/17/2008

My husband and I thought the Capitol Grille would be the perfect accompaniment to a night at the theater on Valentines Day, but we were sadly mistaken. Once our party of four arrived, our server STRONGLY suggested we order the special Valentine's Day 5 course meal. He also told us that if one person at the table wanted the special then we should ALL get it because it would throw the timing off everything. (aka...he would have to work a little harder.) Even though I couldn't decipher what was actually being offered on the special menu, one person in our group wanted it, so we all felt obligated to do so also. Besides, they only had a few other items you could choose from if you didn't get the special. So for $95 a person plus $60 each for the wine pairing we all anticipated culinary delight.\r \r The first thing that arrived at our table ""compliments of the chef"" was the tiniest teaspoon size bite of lobster salad you've ever seen. I'm not complaining, it was a ""gift"" after all, but it was definitely a clue to how the food was to be the rest of the evening...nonexistent. In the four courses before dessert all the food combined MAY have been 3 ounces. Thank goodness for chocolate mousse or I would have starved to death. It would have been nice if our server had poured the wine that paired with each course while we were actually eating that course...not after and onto the next. It would have also really been nice if the air conditioning weren't blowing so hard on our table that I had to wear my winter coat during the entire meal. It would have been super nice if, after spending all that time, money, and energy, we didn't leave the restaurant hungry.\r \r I have been to many fine resaurants and none have been so pretentious and a waste of time as this one. If you like your entire dinner to fit in the palm of a very small hand, then this is the place for you. As for me, the Capitol Grille is WAY too frou frou. Pros: Hermitage Hotel is beautiful, near TPAC, the dessert was good. Cons: Pretty much everything else was not up to standard. more

Capitol Grille 12/26/2007

Elegant, subdued, classic. Very nice ambience. My beef tenderloin was superb. My wife?s sea bass was excellent. Coconut cake was very good. The oyster stew was good, but would probably try something different as a starter next time.\r The staff was attentive without being overbearing. Our waiter asked us almost immediately if we were going to the theater that evening and what time we needed to be there. He kept the meal on-track but not rushed.\r \r more

Response from the Hermitage Hotel to Mr. Eisen 11/13/2007

Dear Mr. Eisen,\r \r Thank you for allowing me to learn of your sub-par experiences in our Oak Bar. Rest assured, your comments are being addressed here. We take them very seriously. \r \r I am very sorry that we did not deliver for you, and I would like to have the opportunity to make things right.\r \r I can be reached here at the Hotel at 615-244-3121, and would look forward to straightening things out in whatever way that seems appropriate. \r \r Again, my apologies.\r Sincerely,\r \r Greg Sligh\r Managing Director\r more

The end of an era 11/9/2007

This restaurant has realy gone downhill. Staff lacks knowledge, dirty carpets, etc. There are so many other options in the city that the Capitol Grill is no longer the only upscale dining option available. The hotel also is not as concerned with the customer service as it once was. It's a shame. Pros: Bragging rights-this used to be a five star restaurant Cons: It's now a two star restaurant more

A Real Joke 10/5/2007

Not even close to 5 stars. The barmaids were more interested in talking to each other and had no clue as to what spirits they were serving (i.e. after asking them about items behind the bar they would say ""it's good"" or ""I like it""). The restaurant was better but way overated. The funny thin is, I found out that other Citysearch comments that were posted were by other hotel employees (tonyasean - the Chef & reminias - the Hotel Manager for example). What a joke! Pros: Close to the Theatre Cons: Too many to list more

Great Special Occasion Location 8/27/2006

My fiancé and I recently moved to the area and we were extremely impressed with this restaurant. The food was incredible and the service was outstanding. Our server's name was Connie and she was very friendly and also recommended several other restaurants in the area for us to try. While there you must also check out the men's restroom. It was restored to the original art deco design and is definitely not something to be missed. This is a must for anyone going out for a special night out. Pros: Service, Food more

wow!!!!!!! 8/25/2006

Love this place! I treat myself to Capitol Grill as often as I can. Truly one of the best places in the Ville! more

A surprise 7/23/2006

My wife and I enjoyed a very favorable evening at Capitol Grill. We found the bar staff and waiter to be very well trained. The food was unique without being pretentious. I have suggested this to a number of business associates and friends. The prices were about what we see in most upscale restaurants in the Chicago Metro. more

Perfect service, atmosphere and food 7/23/2006

The Service, food and atmosphere at the Capitol Grill make it the only place in Nashville that i consistently recommend to all VIPs in our Hotel. My dining experience was pefect from start to finish and everytime i send a group to this restaurant, they come back raving.\r Pros: ambience, service, food Cons: pricey, but well worth it more

Overpriced 7/7/2006

My husband and I went to Capitol Grill for my birthday. Although the atmosphere was very romantic (rose petals on the table), the food left much to be desired. We ordered the scallop appetizer, and for about $14 got TWO scallops (they were only okay - a bit chewy). I ordered a filet for dinner and asked for medium to medium-well. This filet had to be one of the driest and most uninteresting filets that I've ever ordered at a fine restaurant. It even had a good bit of fat that I had to trim off. When you spend over $200 for a meal for two, you expect everything to be just about perfect. We didn't even bother getting desert, but opted to go to F.Scott's for a more interesting enviornment. Definitely choose somewhere else for a ""fine dining"" experience. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Food and price more

Wow! 5/13/2006

From beginning to end, this is what a historical dining experience should be. Upon arival, the period-dressed doormen directed us to the underground bar. There the bartender, a gentleman with a pencil-thin mustache crafted the PERFECT martini and told us the history of the Hotel and restaurant. We then dined in the Capitol Grille. Every course was more impressive than the last. Roncie, our server was on top of everything through out the night. We then retreated to the upstairs lobby to finish our drinks on plush chairs by the fireplace. The all-male service staff accents the professionalism of the establishment. It doesn't get much better than this! Pros: great wine list, unique ingrediants, professional servers more

Very Disappointed 7/26/2005

I was very disappointed. The service was impersonal and poorly trained. The tuna entree was very poor quality and the assistant waiter took the full plate away without a comment. After the waiter was told that the tuna was poor quality, he just curtly replied, ""I wish I had known"". Nothing was adjusted on the bill. We are avid diners at area restaurants and we will not be back to this disappointing stuffy restaurant. Pros: ambience Cons: service, food quality, comfort more

BEYOND WORDS 7/14/2005

I cannot begin to decribe this place!I have live in LA, NEW YORK and most recently Paris! This is by far the most creative food on the planet. BRAVO Pros: love it, love it, love it more
