Pathetic 1/3/2010

No wonder they went bankrupt. They're pathetic and are stealing peoples money. I went to the Durham Peak Fitness to cancel my membership. The manager said that they couldn't terminate my membership at the club and that I'd have to call their membership services. I did that but the rep I spoke to, who was the manager, said I had to email a written request to cancel which I did. 8 days later I hadn't heard back from Peak membership services so I called. The rep/manager said she had received the email but had not processed my request. I was then copied on the email that was sent to their financial dept. to be processed. I figured all was well because she had made this request but no. The next month my bank card was charged another $27 fee. I called the rep back and left a voice mail but she never returned my call. I followed that up with an email stating that they were still charging me. She then showed me print screen of the evidence showing that she had made the request for the account to be canceled. She assured me that my bank card would be refunded but it never was. I then made the request that they remove my bank card from their file so they couldn't bill me again. Well guess what, a month later my bank card was charged again! This time I said forget it and just called my bank. I filed a claim and had to show them all the emails that went back and forth stating that they should have terminated my account and refunded my money. I also asked them if the membership services had stopped payment to my bank card and they had not. SHOCKING! It was still valid in their system and they were going to charge me again. My bank then blocked the card from being used and I'm still waiting to hear back regarding the claim. Never in my whole life have I dealt with a company who lacks such integrity or just basic common sense. Good Ridden Peak Fitness. Rest in Peace Cons: where do I start more

Dishonest 9/3/2009

Without warning Peak closed its location in Winston-Salem. 2 days before closing down we were sent a letter informing us they filed for chapter 11 and and had the gall to include a coupon for a 2 month free trial membership. I was 11 months into a 3 year prepaid membership when they shut down. Don't join. Don't trust Peak. I only gave them 1 star because 0 was an option. Pros: Was good while it lasted Cons: Dishonest, unreliable thieves and liars more

If you are moving and want reimbursement for remainder of your contract... 12/22/2008

BE SURE TO SUBMIT FOR REIMBURSEMENT *WELL* IN ADVANCE! i moved from the area back in august at which time i submitted for reimbursement for the remainder of my contract. after calling multiple times and leaving multiple messages since then (i called at least once/week for 2 months!), i FINALLY received my reimbursement check in late december...which turned out to be half of what was expected! i am furious and am unable to get anyone from corporate to call me back. their corporate phone # is 704-896-5595. long story short, if you know you'll be moving from the area and want reimbursement for the remainder of your contract, submit it at least 90 DAYS IN ADVANCE if you can and STAY ON THEM until you get your check!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Best deal for a fitness club in Cary! 12/5/2008

I have been a member of Peak Fitness for over three years and love it! I usually take the Spinning classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday! They are the best instructors who also teach at clubs like Lifetime, the YMCA and Gold's Gym. The staff of the gym is very friendly; the aerobics room is usually cleaned up and organized; There is a Sauna and Steam Room and a Hot Tub! For the price of the membership, you cannot beat it! I don't need marble floors in a gym, I just need good instructors, good equipment and friendly members. That can all be found at Peak Fitness In Cary on Edinburgh Dr.at A VERY AFFORDABLE PRICE! Pros: Great Price for Membership! Cons: No Cons for me! more

DO NOT JOIN GARNER PEAK FITNESS!!!!!!!!!! 9/3/2008

As hard as it is to get motivated to work out, this gym makes it even harder. #1... the a/c never seems to run properly, especially in the afternoon it's hotter than it is outside (in August). #2... many machines are out of order, and it takes weeks to fix them, if they choose to. one treadmill had a big wrip in the belt w/ a flap hanging off and they thought it was still ok to use... don't think so... i should have used it and pretended to fall so i could cancel my membership... #3... the machines that do work are crappy.. make VERY loud clicking noises, etc #4... there are always 4-5 trainers standing around doing nothing, staring at the girls. sometimes 4-5 of them stand outside and stare at you walking in or leaving. #5... they follow the posted hours when they feel like it... they're supposed to open at 8 am on saturdays (which has changed from being open 24 hrs), and this past sat. i went and they were still not open at 8:45. what a waste of gas! i've gone to many other gyms in other states and have been very happy. peak fitness is HORRIBLE. i only joined b/c it's the only gym w/in 15-20 min of my house... at first the management was good... but now there is all new horrible management........ stay away! Pros: close to my house Cons: see my comment more

BEWARE!!! 6/8/2008

Lousy gym - once a great gym. I have been a member for probably nearly 20 years in Chapel Hill, beginning when it was Spa Health Club. Spa Health Club sold out to Capital Fitness who owned briefly. Then Peak Fitness took over. Since Peak has taken over the club in Chapel Hill, the standards have dropped very low. The equipment is nearly always broken (esp the magnets on the treadmills--always missing and thus, the treadmills do not work!); the gym is frequenlty out of soap and cleaning supplies; but WORSE.. they raised my rates AND they charged me a $50 processing fee for cashing my check to them! They say this is ""corporate"" but ""Corporate"" is elusive and no one will give out the phone number for ""ABC Financial"" aka ""Corporate Peak Fitness."" WORSE-- the air conditioning in the gym has been broken for a week plus... and it has been a sweltering 99 degrees! I can't even use my membership! When I phoned about the a/c, I was told-- ""Well,t here is a dispute about who has to fix the air conditioning-- the property owner or Peak Fitness... so we don't know when it will be fixed."" This gym appears to be going bankrupt. Their practices are unsavory and they are untruthful in their dealings. I'm not so sure they treat any of their employees well, either. Take my advice, don't join and pass the word on. Oh, and they've cut their ""open 24 -hours, 7 days a week"" to a lot less. more

DONT SIGN UP FOR PERSONAL TRAINING!! 6/3/2008

I was rudely interupted while working out by a guy who somewhat conned me into signing up for personal training. After charging my credit card $599, I was told I have 3 days to cancel, which I did. The sheet I was giving said I would receive my refund within 30 days and OF COURSE, I have not been refunded. I emailed the very VAGUE contact information given on the website and FINALLY after sending 3 emails got a response telling me they had no record of me signing up for personal training, just a record of my current gym membership and that I would need to contact the corporate office without giving any contact information to do so. I responded with sending the lady my credit card statement showing that I had been charged by Pro Fitness Downtown Cary NC. Again, after three more days, she finally responded telling me that they do not need my credit card information, they did not charge my credit card, and there is nothing more they can do. GEEE THANKS LADY! I personally plan on contacting the highest of the highest and making sure they understand my annoyment and frustration!!! Pros: decent student discount Cons: not helpful, give you the run around, slack more

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!!!!!! 4/26/2008

Horrible customer service, dishonest representation of their contracts, 'specials' etc.\r They'll tell you one thing and sign you up for another-facilities are less than decent and you'll want to bring the contract to a lawyer with a fine tooth comb if you're even considering it.\r \r \r \r better yet- DONT SIGN UP-!!!!!!!!! Pros: the same as any half-assed dirty gym Cons: it's a half assed dirty gym that lies more

Peak cancels unprofitable contracts, lets facilities degrade. 2/25/2008

I have a lifetime renewable contract with Peak. This contract was expensive at the time it was entered with Spa Health Club. I have maintained the contract terms for 25 years. Peak has recently acquired the facilities along with their equipment and profits, but is refusing to accept their obligations. They are requiring us to pay rates which will more than triple over the next two years. Since justice is much more expensive than yearly rates, no one person can afford to take legal action to protect our investment. I agree that the facilities have sorrowfully degraded since Peak has bought them and many do not think the contracts are worth protecting, even though they pay less than $60 per YEAR. My advice, be carefull and look elsewhere. Pros: Good rates overall Cons: Untrustworthy more

Do yourself a favor- avoid these clowns altoghether 2/6/2008

As others on this board have pointed out, they will lie to get you under contract and will not honor what they said. Once you sign the contract they will play dumb and refer you to their sleazy financial company who will also play dumb. My advice is to avoid Peak Fitness like the plague. more

Beware, take everything they say with a grain of salt 12/20/2007

This gym was awesome when it was Spa Health Club, sure the equipment was older, but managment was friendly. They purchased newer equipment. but when it breaks be prepared for a month or more wait. If they say something is coming soon when you sign up, don't expect to see it for years, if ever. I recently cancelled my membership because I moved. It's a several month process. They give you the run around, phone numbers that are always busy and don't respond to letters or emails. When you cancel definitly send the letter registered mail return receipt. Also make sure you keep them current on credit card payments,( this happened to my friend not me). If you miss 1 payment because you got a new credit card, they'll charge you the rest of your contract plus fees up front, no warning that something happened with the card and they need a new number, just a letter saying pay in 5 days or they are going to court. Another negative is that gym managment has nothing to do with the gym itself. The Gyms are managed by a company in Arkansas. If you do have an issue don't expect to ever get a response. So while the people at the gyms are friendly they have no power over anything. They just give you a business card for the managment group. Do a search on the web about their infamous ""We want more money letter"" where they tried to bill everyone an additional money outside their contracts to upgrade the gyms. No opt out, they were just going to bill the credit card on file. Beware member signup bonuses where you get 3 months free for refering a friend. You will most likely never see this. Search the web, there are a lot of negatives about this chain, and it's not just people like me writing reviews, it's news paper article about pending litigation because they commit so much fraud. Pros: Ok gym, good hours Cons: Horrible managment, hidden fees, takes months to cancel the membership more

Worst gym I've ever attended 11/3/2007

I had a terrible experience here and would not recommend this facility to anyone. Their personal trainers are hardly qualified. Sure they have a certification - mail order - nothing worth while. Am I bitter? Sure, I wasted my money on this facility and on personal training. In the end I joined the YMCA 11 months prior to my Peak expiration date. \r \r Check out some other sources like; ABC11 [dot] com - Diane Wilson the ""trouble shooter"", the NC Attorney General website and even Club Industry Fitness Pro. You'll find the easily in google.\r \r Like Diane Wilson says in #1 above - you get what you pay for.... Pros: Price Cons: Nothing good to say about the clud more

Be careful. 5/20/2007

Don't listen to them, but read the contract carefully. When I became a member, the guy told me that it's easy to cancel the membership and recommended me to make one-year contract. But actually it's not easy, you need a proof of moving out far away, 30 miles away from their facility or proof of disability to cancel the contract. 30 miles is insane and that you don't want to go cannot be a reason. I may just have to continue paying for more than half a year for nothing. They lied. Don't listen to them. I should have read the contract more carefully...\r more

CAUTION CAUTION With the Peak Downtown location 4/11/2007

I was a member of Capital Fitness prior to Peak buying Capital. Since the gym became Peak it\r has gone down really fast. The equipment stays broken for months. The locker rooms and \r showers are filithy with mold growing in the stalls. Peak is getting a negative reputation \r that they dont seem to care about. Dont be surprised you the facilities dont have toliet paper or\r soap for days. Read the contract carefully many members have told me that there membership \r included towels then Peak told them it didnt. Anything that they promise make them write \r it on your contract. CAUTION CAUTION with this gym.\r Cons: No PArking. Intergrity issues with management, Filthy -they dont have a cleaning crew more

Best Gym around 2/3/2007

I recently signed up for myself and I must say that I am very impressed so far. The people are friendly (staff and other members ) the equipment is first rate and clean, and I love the hours. They also have another place in Cary and a new one in Apex. You can sign up for a personal trainer or group activities too. Pros: Great people and equipment, fun place more

Best Fitness Club 1/23/2007

With so many locations, there must be one close to you. They definately have a positive ""vibe"" and working out is always fun and high energy. Being open 24 hours during the week is a big plus, as my wife and I like to go together, usually late in the evening. The equipment is top rate and I've never seen one down. The showers and changing areas are clean and bright, and their rates are very reasonable. We're very happy with Peak Fitness at Cary ( very convenient on Rte 64 ) Pros: Great value, good equipment, friendly staff more
