we had heard everyone raving about the incredible cake that blackmarket made for a school play cast-party. it was the talk of the event. that alone made us want to order a cake for our daughter's 13th birthday. blackmarket did not disappoint. from the first taste of the sample, i knew it would be great. the staff was very informative in selecting the perfect choice for the cake. chocolate (i don't even like chocolate) was the choice. topped with a custom design which they matched to a photoshop file i emailed to them, the cake was fabulous. everyone loved it, but the question they all had was...""how many more pieces can i have to take with me?"" it's safe to say that a grocery store cake will never, ever suffice in our home again. the kids loved it, parents loved it, grandparents loved it and i loved it (did i mention i don't even like chocolate?)"" more

Black Market Bakery makes some of the best cake I've ever had. They use high quality ingredients, not any of that cheap stuff that you get at the large wholesale warehouse stores. Pros: Exceptional cake Cons: Pricey but how often are you purchasing cake? It's worth it & friends will be impressed. more

After investigating several bakeries in Orange County, we asked Blackmarket Bakery to bake and decorate our wedding cake. We could not have been more pleased! We ordered four cake flavors (Mister Special, Carrot & the Stick, Moulin Rouge, and Banana Split). All the cakes were moist, delicious, and beautiful. The staff was helpful fromstart to finish, including the cake tasting, choosing a design, and making sure we had everything we needed for our special day. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have never seen such an amazing cake before. When I emailed Rachelmarie and Jeniffer regarding an unsual birthday cake request for my daughter's 18th birthday (She has a thing about roasted turkeys...), I never thought the resulting cake would be this fabulous. The description of a table set for ""Thanksgiving dinner"" with an obnoxiously large turkey in the middle of the cake was beyound belief. My daughter was speechless (a first for her). Now, mind you this is before we ever tasted the cake. The red velvet was perfect...moist with a good balance of chocolate, just a hint. I can't think of anything that could compare with the cake you made for us. Thank you again!! more

We love the flavor of the passion fruit BD cake. Just like the lemon cake; their flavors are so intense which make their cake unique. The fondant decorations are elegant even as simple as just circles. more

I have been a devotee of the Black Market Bakery ever since we discovered it last year at the Irvine Global Festival. We think this is the very best bakery around! The breads, mocha shortbreads, and almond cookies are to die for - and most of all, we are addicted to the homemade marshmallows!!! We are weekly regulars and plan to remain faithful! I have been going to the Blackmarket for almost three years now, and not once have I been disappointed! Chef Rachel Marie and her fabulous staff make the most wonderful cakes, croissants, cookies, and candies that I have ever tasted. I love to travel, and in every place I visit I try to go to a few bakeries. I have yet to find a bakery that makes anything as fresh and delicious as the Blackmarket Bakery. My personal favorites are the three cheese and red pepper sourdough bread, chocolate croissants, florentine bars (almonds, cranberries, and candied ginger on a buttery rich crust- killer!), and the basque tart. The cakes have fun and unique flavors unlike anything else. I have become a total cake snob ever since I started going to BB, and I always insist on a birthday cake from them. The cooking classes are a lot of fun ( I've taken pretty much every single one) and I have learned to make so many things that I never would have tried on my own. I've become a much better home baker since taking classes there. Forget every other place and go to the Blackmarket! more

Chef Rachel never disappoints. Words fail me in describing her absolutely luscious treats; one needs only to taste a sample and risk being hooked forever. Our favorite (and most requested) special occasion cake is the Metropolis, dark chocolate, mocha mousse, coffee genoise and semi-sweet chocolate fondant. Very European-like, smooth as silk and not overly sweet. Among her seasonal specials we loved the Whoopie Pie, which is a rich, moist pumpkin sort of soft cookie with a heavenly cream cheese filling. But my absolute favorite is the luscious lemon Basque Tart with raspberries, so outstandingly rich but light - pure heaven. She also does amazing free-form birthday cakes. We saw one for another customer that was a stegasaurus, complete with the landscape of rocks, flora and fauna, all of which was edible. She's quite the artist, as well as one hulluva' baker! more

Its the place to go for baked goods. I love the croissants and the takes are amazing. I'd eat their stuff everyday if I could. more

I have been going to the Blackmarket bakery for a couple of years. At first it started with me just picking up a few of their unbelievable treats at the farmer's markets here and there. Then I started taking Rachels cooking classes. Her classes are phenomenal. I've learned more about cooking in the past two years than I have in my life. Now I am a total baked goods snob and nothing compares to what either Rachels has taught me to make or what she makes. She also made a cake for my father's birthday and my friends baby shower and both were by consensus the best cakes anyone had ever tasted - Not to mention, beautifully decorated. To sum up - This bakery is sinfully delicious! more

Blackmarket Bakery is an absolute Orange County find! They have such quality products and wonderful staff. Everything is freshly handmade from scratch. The brioche is a favorite. Try using it for making French Toast. The tarts are amazing. Save yourself some work and buy some for a dinner party. Our favorites are the Basque with almonds, raspberries and lime cream and the Black Widow with chocolate ganache and caramel (yes, deadly). Put the cinnamon marshmallows in your morning coffee and you'll have a new addiction. Everytime I bring home a different product, my family says, ""Where did you get this?"" The flavor combinations in the cakes are amazing and can be custom decorated. A must for a special occasion. And to top it all off, you can go to the bakery for classes if you want to improve your own baking skills. The classes are like no other. They are not a demonstration. You get hands on experience in the kitchen with recipes that are wonderful and Chef Rachel is so inspirational. more

What a local treat! Hidden away near John Wayne in an industrial park, Black Market Bakery is a great place to buy treats for the workplace, event cakes, attend classes and even find unique Tshirts! Owner Rachel is a creative baker who combines flavors I've never dreamed of before. Delightful to sample things like naturally flavored marshmallows in big squares (try floating the mint in hot chocolate!), tarts and tartletts, decorated cookies, macaroons of assorted flavors, brittles, etc. etc. Well worth the indulgence!! They do farmer's markets too. more

Over the past 1.5 years, I must have ordered at least a dozen cakes from Black Market Bakery. The quality of ingredients and delicious taste keeps me going back again and again. I'm a creature of habit and really like Mr. Special (buttermilk cake, berries, cointreau syrup and vanilla buttercream) and Moulin Rouge (chocolate cake, hazelnut ganache, toasted hazelnuts, raspberries and dark chocolate ganache). The weight of Rachel's cakes are something to comment about - they are heavy! Probably due to the amount of real butter and other high quality ingredients. You can get a sneak peak of Black Market Bakery at the farmers markets in Irvine, Tustin and the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds - this is where I discovered them first! Blackmarket has a wonderful staff and a phenomenal, talanted and enjoyable Chef! Chef Rachel Marie is a joy and her exuberance for her craft is contagious. All of her items are exceptional at the Blackmarket and at the various Farmer's Markets that they attend. more

I used to be an equal opportunity cake eater. I love desserts. But after trying the cakes at Blackmarket Bakery, I've become a complete cake snob. Cheap mix cakes and shortening ""buttercreams"" now taste awful and make me feel sick. The Blackmarket cakes are so rich, and have such a pure flavor, you don't need to eat a lot to feel satisfied. I've never been a big frosting fan until I tried theirs. It is buttery and smooth and delicious. And their cake is not too sweet, just really really good. Their breads are great too -- the croissants have a ton of chocolate, the scones are the best, and the brioche is magnificent. Pros: Great products! Cons: No place to sit, purely take-out. more
