Editorial review from Citysearch 4/8/2015

I had this insurance for 11 yrs just for in case of emergency. I was never impressed with the vets here. In 2008, I moved to San Diego. I started going here (La Jolla). The vet does not look at you and talk. He gave me statistics on how many dogs suffer from flea and related diseases and want to inject some trial drug. Then he left. My next visit was with Dr. Shannon. You name it every disease she learned in vet school she thinks my dog has. At that visit I told them not to put catheter to collect urine and I offered them I can bring them next day. They did collect urine without my concern. My dog was terrified after this. I never leave my dog with them after this. My next check up was with another vet. She said, my dog's liver enzymes were very high. Did not recommend next steps. May be doesn't know. After this I stopped going there.\r Recently, I called them to close my account. The receptionist immediate response was "" Are you getting rid of him"". People skills absolutely zero. more

NEW VETS!!!!! LOVED THE CARE I RECEIVED RECENTLY! 10/13/2010

I have actually met the Dr. Shlereth that is no longer employed at the La Jolla location and all I will say is ""thank Goodness"" he is gone! But that is the past and as of now they have a wonderful new sweet compassionate Doc working there by the name of Dr. Suzy Shannon. I have had to go in for several visits with my two dogs and have been very pleased with the service. They did courtesy calls to check on my dog over the weekend and did thorough check ups throughout the following weeks. The nurses were amazing and helped me over the phone with all of my questions regarding my discharge instructions even when we were out of town. Our absolute favorite Vet was a visiting Doc by the name of Dr. Hyun. Our pets immediately felt comfortable with him when he walked into the room and he really came across as a genuine animal lover! He was so gentle and in tune with our dogs and we really got the sense that he became a Vet for his true love of animals! I'm not sure if he's on staff or Locum Tenens but he is definitely an amazing Veterinarian and one worth recommending. Prices are average(maybe slightly on higher side but come on now, this is La Jolla) but all in all its the care we are ultimately concerned about! One thing I hope that Banfield will change somewhere down the road is allowing you to be with your dog during the sedation phase. We have been spoilt from our last vet who use to let us in the back and be with our dog until she was completely sedated before treatment. I'm sure that because it's such a big chain and with all the legalities and crazy people out there they would need to set boundaries with pet owners which is understandable, but none the less worth looking into ;). I would definitely recommend this place to everyone and encourage past patients to return and meet the new Vet on staff, she is a breath of fresh air compared to the last Doc! more

Everyone but the Dr. is great 10/9/2009

I've been going there for a couple of years now, and never really liked the vet. When i'd first met him I thought that he was rude and arrogant. Before my last visit I realized that I was nervous about seeing him. Huh? Why do I continue to go to a vet that I dread? The answer is, I don't anymore. Next visit will be at a further, less convenient location, because thats how bad he is. He has no table-side manner, kinda like Dr. House, minus the brilliance. Pros: Staff is friendly and helpful Cons: The vet is rude more

Great Compassionate Vet! 10/6/2009

I must say that my experience at this hospital was stellar and very refreshing! The people that work there are obviously loving and caring as they made my dog feel comfy and calm right away. The Doctor spoke to me with compassion, as though he genuinely cared about the health and well being of my dog. I did not feel like a ""number"" in his busy day. He actually took the time to explain things to me. He was very thorough. (hard to find!) He was kind, sensitive and gentle with my dog. I am grateful for his vast knowledge regarding flea and tick control. It was very useful. (especially when you have children in the house!) I felt very comfortable and taken care of here. Any Doctor that goes above and beyond like this one deserves my business. Highly recommended! Pros: He's kind and he takes the time to explain things to you. Cons: None to my knowledge. more

Impatient and Uninterested 10/5/2008

I am a first-time dog owner and had questions for my dog's first vet to ensure I am knowledgeable about caring for her. Dr. Schlereth was dismissive and impatient. He lacked any sort of customer service or ability to relate to his patient or patient's owner. I was so excited to learn more about my dog and thought I would be receiving personal care at Banfield in La Jolla. I was so ready to be a life-time customer! Unfortunately, I left confused and disappointed. The nurse was almost apologetic...and far more helpful. The nurse even advised me that their Wellness program is not a savings for healthy young dogs - rather it can cost up to 2 - 5X more than I would normally pay if I just brought her in for her routine check-ups and bought maintenance meds online. more

Not Recommended 8/18/2008

I have used Banfield Pet Hospitals for years and when I recently moved to San Diego I transferred to the nearest one in La Jolla, however I won't be going back as the Vet Dr. Schlerth seemed very uninterested in my pet and seemed annoyed at any questions or concerns I had. The nurse there was a lot more helpful with my questions. I recommend Banfield but I don't recommend the La Jolla location or that particular Vet more

Unprofessional Vet 7/2/2008

Doctor Schlereth was totally ""not interested"" in taking care of my pet, the exam was pretty rough... a total lack of professionalism. Careful with hidden costs! I'll never take my pet to this place anymore. more
