A must for local houstonians & visitors 9/4/2011

The Amtrak station in Houston,Tx resembles a museum on the inside, even though the outside is not really atractive. Houston's grand old original station was demolished in the early 60's and like so many other towns, they lost their old beautiful train station. But this one is definately worth the visit to see the old antique posters, timetables, pictures, and history hanging on the walls. All walls are covered top to bottom with memoribilia. Freindly tickets agents always on duty to explain train travel and sell tickets.Check amtrakcom for station hours before going. Houston does have passenger train service to Los Angeles and to New Orleans (and all intermediate stops).Helps to stop by the station and pick up what is called a "Nationals timetable",which has a map and all the timetables nationwide of where you can go on Amtrak. Once aboard the train, their is wide selections of food and liquor both in the dining car and the lounge car. I recommend sleeping car accomodations for longer trips, but the coach cars have 4 times the leg room that you find on a plane. Many people make the mistake of thinking a train is like a bus, but that is so far from the truth, it not funny. They make smoking stoops for smokers also. When in Los Angeles or New Orleans, you can connect to other trains going about anywhere in the nation. I'll never fly again if I can help it. Alot of Houstonians don't know about passenger train service and I didn't either until a frequent rider introduced me to it and wow was I impressed. I'm a frequent business traveler from the Houston area and I'll never fly again if Amtrak is going my way. You SEE everything there is to see going by train and flying you see nothing, not even to speak of all the hassels of flying these days. more
