How did this yoga studio get overlooked? 9/15/2010

MindBodySoul opened in March of 2009, and it's like a diamond in the middle of an empty parking lot. There aren't many yoga options within 30 blocks (maybe more) of the GW Bridge. But I don't go there, just because it's convenient; I go there, because the studio and the instructors are incredible. First of all, the room truly feels like an oasis of peace (and I say this as someone with little to no acceptance of metaphysics or spirituality). The place is always immaculate, but never with any fussiness. The decorations are pleasant without tipping over into ostentation. Advertisements for other local businesses are tastefully located in a quiet corner. It's large enough that it never feels crowded, but it's small enough that it never feels empty or that the student is too far away from the teacher -- perfect size. The owner possesses a knack for spotting talent, and none of the yoga instructor stereotypes apply here. In nearly a year of attending and taking classes from nine different teachers, I've never had anything that resembles a bad class. The teachers are clearly passionate about what they do, but they also understand that all students must approach their practices on their own terms, so they're never ""in your face"" with, well, anything. On the other hand, they're also concerned with their students' well-being, each one of them uniquely warm, friendly, and hospitable. The prices are reasonable. There's tea (and, on occasion, organic chocolate) offered gratis. The changing facilities (if needed) are more than adequate, and the mats, blankets, and other accoutrements are obviously washed frequently. If you live or work in the neighborhood -- or even if you find yourself uptown -- it's always a good idea to stop on by. If this place can't help you restore your balance, then nothing can! more
