Best Doc Ever! 9/9/2011

I was in and out of the hospital before finding Dr. Berger for a few weeks and was never properly diagnosed. I found him and his staff and made the appointment and was treated so kindly. He took charge of my medical situation, sent me for exams that was never suggested by any of the other doctors (which is probably why I was never diagnosed to begin with) and started to treat me as soon as the results were in - which was the very next day! I've had a few follow-ups since meeting him and his staff is wonderful in accommodating my crazy schedule and he always takes time to return my call and answer any questions I may have. I have recommend him to everyone that I know! more

Bad Experience 12/5/2010

I agree with the one bad review that's given here and, frankly, am surprised at so many good ones. \r \r I had a very bad experience with this doctor. I went to see him two times only (for my annual exam and then to get test results - believe it or not but he/his office won't call with test results even if they come out OKAY - a follow-up visit is required, which I find ridiculous and a waste of time and money) and that was it. I will never go to him again and will most definitely not recommend him to any of my friends. \r \r I chose him randomly as well, just because he happened to be on my insurance co.'s list. He was rude and unprofessional from the very begninning. He interrupted me in the middle of the sentence during the consultation to pick up his cell phone and then discussed dinner plans with someone for about 10 minutes! I don't know why I didn't leave right then. But, anyway, I waited. \r \r The exam was performed in a very callous way - he made me feel like a chunk of meat on a butcher's table. In addition, he dismissed certain of my concerns and did not give me an ultrasound (an ultrasound with a different doctor confirmed that the problem existed). Further, he PLAIN RIDICULED me when I told him I do not believe in taking synthetic hormones for contraceptive purposes and that I generally prefer holistic approach over conventional methods or some kind of combination of the two (whenever possible, of course) and his receptionist (this conversation took place while he was examining me) was standing there giggling. \r \r Pros: none\r Cons: rude, callous, careless, offensive manners, nasty personality, humiliates patients, dismissive attitude more

...the best! 7/31/2010

Joe Berger was my GYN from 1972 through 1989. He's fabulous. Extremely smart. Hilarious. Personable. Compassionate. Supportive. He was always there when I needed him. The only reason he's NOT my doc anymore is because I moved from NYC in 1989. Trust me on this one, they just don't make docs like Berger anymore. Perhaps the young lady who had problems relating to him doesn't remember old-fashioned family medicine when docs made house calls and then sat down for a cup of coffee to shoot the breeze... Pros: Smart. Funny. Compassionate. Cons: None. more

Great Doctor :) 12/29/2008

I have recently started going to Dr.Berger and I have to say that he is a great doctor. When I met him he was funny and nice and during the discussions that we have had he answered all of my questions and was very respectable. Even during the exams he made me feel comfortable during a normally uncomfortable thing. He even asked me about how my daughter was (it was my second appointment) what doctor does that? A good one. I recommend him to co-workers, friends and family. Pros: Professional, Caring, Knowledgeable and Great Office Staff Cons: Nothing more

Best GYN in NYC, you will be very lucky to have him as your Dr! 8/27/2008

Great doctor, no complaints! Highly recommended! 7/31/2008

I also disagree with the negative review below. Dr. Berger is a wonderful doctor. He is compassionate and cheerful (sorry if that seems to OFFEND some people!) Geez, give the guy a break! I guess some patients prefer that their doctor be stiff, clinical, and rigid. I think his easy going attitude makes the uncomfortable event of opening your legs up in front of someone's face much more tolerable than someone who treats you like a specimen rather than a person. I've had excellent care with Dr. Berger, and his staff is always pleasant and helpful. He has plenty of patients, by the way, but he offers flexible hours, and even late on Fridays so you don't have to take time off from work. As for his knowledge and experience, Dr. Berger is clearly advanced in his field. He treated me for pre-cancerous cells, performed a biopsy (which was pretty painless, because of his expertise) and a year later, the cells are completely removed and have not returned! Dr. Berger always makes me smile and I feel completely at ease in his care. I like the fact that he answers his own phone, and he is always available to answer questions. He is never pushy and he is up-front about explaining any treatments or procedures. I have no intention of finding another doctor, and I routinely recommend him to my friends. Take that other review for what it's worth- sounds like an exaggerated complainer to me! Pros: Easy to get an appointment, always available for phone consult. Cons: none! more

One of the Best Doctors to Trust and Utilize for Quality Care, that has an excellent bedside manner 1/2/2008

This GYN that has been ""MY doctor"", for 16 years. First of all I disagree that Dr.Berger is unprofessional. To discredit a Phenominal doctor because he sang ""Happy Birthday or Yankee doodle came to town"", in the privacy of his own office doesnt qualify him to be a horrible doctor. His staff is assertive, experienced and very compassionate. This woman Lisa that is referred to as ""Lazy"", at Dr.Berger""s office is a well trained, educated and knowledgeable in her work. First and foremost, Lisa is NOT a receptionist at his office. She is his Nurse/ Office Manager for 15years. That office is consistently busy. If I need a prescription or refill, they dont drag me in and have to see me, for me to get what I want or for them to get a copayment, like most doctors do. Importantly, his office staff makes sure that I wouldn't have to wait a few days in order to be seen and treated, while my symptons worsen. I find it hard to believe that a patient is left on a table in stirrups and a speculum left inside of them. Complain that he mistreated you, nevermind that he sang Happy Birthday !!! Im a proud patient with no complaints, and referrring friends, family and co-workers for all this time with them having no complaints, goes to show that he is a Professional, outstanding, compassionate, assertive, knowledgeable humanbeing with an infectious personality and who is a Fantastic Doctor. His office staff is just as equivical. The only way to really know is to take the liberty of finding out. One of my favorite Mottos is, "" The Proof is in the Pudding"". Cant judge others by peoples opinion or inferences. Make your own judgement by seeing it or trying it yourself. That's called living in the Real World. Pros: punctual, clean, gentle, kind Cons: parking more

Unprofessional, rude, and completely frustrating. DO NOT GO! 11/6/2007

I am new to the city and randomly chose Dr. Berger from a list of physicians that my insurance covers. I called and thought I had the wrong number when my call was answered was a casual, ""Hello!"" I had not misdialed, Dr. Berger answers his own phones and he does so as if it were his own personal phone number. He managed to see me the next day, which I was grateful for but I now believe he is so accomodating because there is no way this man can keep patients. On my first visit he answered his cell phone and sang happy birthday to his daughter during my consultation. I wish I was kidding. During the exam, he was casual and made several jokes that I found demeaning and unprofessional. His receptionis, Lisa, was present during my first exam per my request, but was never present during subsequest exams in spite of my initial request. I have been left- mid exam- with the door ajar with my feet in the stirrups and a speculum where speculums go for minutes. When I came in for a follow-up exam, instead of running cultures, like any other professional doctor would have done, Dr. Berger just took a guess, wrote a prescription at the front desk, and left without giving me time to even ask a question. \r Lisa, his completely unhelpful, always too busy to answer a question, rude and unprofessional receptionist is a whole other story unto her own. I have gotten off of the phone with her in tears of frustration at having not gotten a single answer to a simple question. Instead of being helpful or understanding, Lisa seems to take a certian amount of pride in being unknowledgable, lazy, and unwilling to get back to you. Also, I was stupid to not be paying attention to my insurance information and have paid 20 dollars cash per visit when my co-pay is only 15. I never got a reciept and my records show simply that I paid my co-pay, not that I paid too much. \r Bottom line, I cant stress to any one considering seeing Dr. Berger how much of a mistake that truly is. more
