Shopping for a Vacuum Cleaner 11/18/2010

I was on my way to buy a new vacuum when I passed Desco Vacuum on 14th Street on Monday 11/15/10. Planned to go to a named department store but decided to park my car and check out the store. I didn't expect to walk into a more friendly place of business. Mr Desilva, the owner, was at the counter and had such a warm smile as he said hello and how can I help you. I explained to him that I needed a vacuum for wood floors and berber carpet and needed a a vacuum that could be used for both. He took me on a tour for about 1/2 hour explaining the cons and pros seemed he knew what he was talking about and said he has been in the business for over 40 years, three generations. He then introduced me to his wife Grace who was in the back of the store, who was the bookkeeper what an enjoyable couple. They made me laugh and felt that they really cared. Well I bought the vac. I realized that the experience was so satisifying just to know there are still some family businesses out there that are genuine and are really there to fill your needs and really care. Thanks again Rich and Grace I will be back. more

Go elsewhere 11/1/2010

Following 9/11and a FEMA inspection I went to Desco for a HEPA vacuum and air purifiers. While with my salesman I overheard another transaction and learned Desco was offering downtown residents a special deal on a particular Miele. My salesman knew I lived below Canal on the west side, yet hadn't mentioned the special. I asked about it and after showing it to me he persisted in trying to steer me to $$$ models and up-sell me on accessories - - a $200 separately powered carpet attachment for hardwood floors and a low pile rug? A few years ago the cord reel on the machine developed a problem that I was able to fix on my own without replacement parts, after Desco had told me it would be $65 for them to look at it. Two weeks ago the problem recurred more dramatically & I didn't have luck repairing it. I found the part online from various Miele dealers for $103.30. I called Desco and was told they could fix the existing 9 year old cord reel for $119, by replacing the coil spring (an inexpensive component of the cord reel), or they could sell me a new cord reel for $189. Because consistency is a virtue they earned the one star in my review. I then called a place in Williamsburg. They had the cord reel in stock and I picked it up the next day for $105, with tax. It only took 10 minutes longer to get there than 14th St., and there was no line. more

Desco Does Business Right 6/3/2010

I first purchased a Miele vacuum from Desco over 10 years ago. I recently purchased another Miele vacuum. Before purchasing from Desco, I shopped around at Gracious Home and Basics Plus (both are Miele's registered dealers). Desco was far more knowledgeable. This is not surprising since Desco specializes in vacuums. I ended up purchasing from Desco because they are experts, offer fair pricing, and they stand by their sales. Desco sold me a model that is perfectly suited to my needs. I have no carpeting but live with multiple cats. Because of my cats, I vacuum every day to clean pet hair and scattering litter. Desco could have sold me Miele's more expensive models, or, for that matter, other brands. However, the salesperson, Richard Sr, insisted that I buy a less expensive Miele model that will be the best for my needs. He was right. I could not be happier with the purchase. I also had to have my old vacuum serviced and Richard took care of the problem beautifully. Even though the warranty had long expired, Richard even took the trouble to call Miele to see if they could provide the part free of charge. When Miele declined, Richard fixed the machine and offered a very generous discount. If you need a vacuum, go to Desco. They'll take care of you with expert help and at a very fair price. Pros: Knowledgeable; sells what you need and no more more

Excellent Customer Service, Friendly and helpfull 5/16/2010

I initially have doubts coming into the store because of two and old bad reviews written about Desco. On my way to the store I hesitated a bit and mentioned to my husband If I should even bother goin in to the store and even bother asking abouth IQAir Purifier which I really need so badly. I wondered if they would be mean to me(for I happen to attract a lot of them nowadays). The minute I walked in - I got a smile and hello from a nice fellow name Richard who ask me If I needed help. I asked him if he had IQAir Healthpro Plus in stock and he politely said yes. He describe the product and was very well verse and professional about it. He showed me the floor model and I told him that is exactly what I wanted . So far so good, the conversation was going great - no meaness or anything. He gave me a great price on the product and even gave me an extra filter. He describe how it was so much in demand during the 911 and I mentioned to him that I truly needed a good one for I suffer from severe asthma and bad allergies. I told him that he is really nice and he mentioned to me that his wife would like to hear that and she happened to be at the store working in the back. I loudly told her that he has a good husband and lucky to have him even working on Sunday for a living - she gave me a lovely smile and replied back that she got herself working in there too - what a nice couple!. Richard mentioned he happened to spot for another employee that had to take the day off to be with his son's birthday. This are down to earth people and truly friend and customer oriented and what community needs to know and recognize. more

I recently purchased a vacuum at Desco, I was hesistant at first because of the bad reviews on this site. I'm taking the time to write a good review because my experience was extremely pleasant. The salesperson I dealt with was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone interested in purchasing a new vacuum more

The last straw and the last place you should buy a vacuum 8/22/2009

I've bought 3 $650 -$900 vacuums from Desco - 2 were Meile. Shortly after each of their warranties ran out, they had problems. Although the motors worked fine, they weren’t suctioning. Each time, Desco told me I had to leave the machine overnight and then said the motors were shot & not worth fixing. After the second problem, the manager talked me into a Riccar 1700 and his 3-year warranty for a total of almost $900. Less than 6 months later, the extension started collapsing. Desco said the $80 part wasn’t covered under the warranty so I taped it. Then the turbo attachment stopped working and then housing on the extension popped off in pieces. On the phone Desco said the power for the turbo ran through the extension and might be why the turbo wasn't working. When I got to the store, it was empty. A guy was working in the repair area and another came to help me. He gave me a new extension. I showed him the turbo-he didn't see anything wrong with it .I asked him to please test it and the manger came running out and said, ""No! You have to leave it until tomorrow. We don't have a machine to test it."" I walked over to the demonstration model and said, ""This is my machine - it will only take 30 seconds and we can see if it's working."" He started screaming, ""We don't test in front of the customer instantly - we're too busy."" There was no one in the store and only 1 of the 3 guys were working. I offered to do it myself. He grabbed the hepa filter I was buying and said, ""If you don't want to leave it, we're not selling you any parts, get out of my store!"" I was packing up and the serviceman whispered to me, ""I would do it for you - it would only take a minute but he's my boss. Just press the reset button."" He let me pay for the extension tube that I had not yet removed from my bag. When I got home, the turbo worked fine with the new extension. The manager s behavior was rude and suspect-seems he just wants to charge labor time for diagnosing, needed or not. I believe that had I left the turbo, I would have come back today to hear that it was ""shot"" - as had happened with the two Meiles. The good side to this story: I saved a lot of money on the hepa filter-I found it on the Internet for 1/3 the price! Cons: mean staff, unprofessional, don't stand behind products/war more

Go elsewhere if you can- be prepared for mean people if you can't! 2/5/2008

A pure pity. They could actually do the work and their charges are reasonable- but their manager, Richard, and his staff are just plain mean for no reason. I've been a neighbor and had repairs done there over 15 years- it's always a big drama. Currently I've been waiting nearly 3 weeks just for them to pick the vacuum. I am always polite when I call, they throw me on hold, then say I am ""in the book"" and they ""don't know why"" no one picked it up, then they yell at me and say I am taking too much of their time. Today again they didn't pick it up and when I called, they said they decided not to pick it up because they *think* I don't want them to. (?) They also said they called me to say so- even though they have the wrong number and I never said that. I gave Richard the right number.\r Now they say they are picking it up. I said ""great"" and hung up.\r Anyone want to take bets on whether they will pick it up today?\r Gosh it will be fun when they call with an estimate... :(\r Pros: can do the job Cons: horrid service more
