Best

This place is a Berkeley tradition. It is delicious. And it shows up quickly and pretty much in just as good a shape as you would get it fresh at a table. Yay!

Worst

The only ingredients they seemed to use were beans, rice, and cheese. (Got vegetarian stuff). Sooooo heavy. Why no cilantro, tomato, avocado, onion, etc?

first time using this service . We ordered from Juan's and the food was delivered hot and within an hour of ordering. Plenty of food from the assortment that we ordered. Food was good and each plate had plenty of food. We also ordered condiments with the food. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious. Way to go That's! We definitely will order again. Prices were reasonable and delivery charges were fair. more

I will not order from Juan's place again. There were hairs in the tostada that I ordered. My wife ended up not getting to eat it. Also, the tostada was put in a container that trapped all of the moisture in and made it very soggy. more

I love this place. Great chips, great salsa, great place. Being from California I have had my share of Mexican and this place comes close to the best. more

Worst Mexican you can get 2/26/2007

Juan's Place. Probably the worst Mexican food I have encountered in Berkeley. The food is roughly like that found in chain restaurants such as Chevy's. The last time I ordered a burrito with no sour cream. What arrived at the table was a burrito covered in sour cream. The staff would not correct their mistake.\r \r For good Mexican the Mission District is the way to go. more

Great atmosphere, bad mexican food 2/26/2007

i've been to juan's countless times over the past ~5 years or so, it's a really fun place, good (if weak) maragaritas, great flour tortilla chips. but the food other than the chips is just bad at best. i don't know how so many people can give this such a high rating. it makes me embarrassed to be from san diego to see all these people reference juan's as the ""best mexican restaurant north of SD."" i was going to write this review yesterday but went to juan's last night and thought i'd give it a 15th chance or so, to see if the food has improved, or if perhaps i ordered the wrong item the first 14 times. Juan's is a great establishment especially for large groups but please for the love of god do not go here for the food. And for the record the best Mexican food north of san diego is in Redwood City, a heavily hispanic area of the peninsula that has ~15 mexican restaurants in a 3 mile radius. just like san diego. Pros: atmosphere, maragritas, chips Cons: qualify of food more

A fun find 1/3/2007

Good, cheap food and a friendly atmosphere make Juans a great place to go with friends. Too bad its a bit out of the way...I lived in Berkeley for four years before I even knew it existed. \r \r But the food and atmosphere are worth the little trek...its not fancy-schmancy tex-mex, its good old fashioned burritos, fajitas, and enchiladas. Go with friends for a casual, fun evening. Pros: food, fun atmosphere Cons: no margaritas more

NOT AUTHENTIC: cheddar cheese grease 6/6/2006

I felt compelled to write in because I went to this place because of the other people's ratings, but I'm pretty sure they're all Juan's friends. \r \r The Service was NOT bad, but the food was very very bad. I, without exaggeration, got a stomach ache. There was a pile of plastic-like ?monterey jack and cheddar cheese. The horchata was extremely watered down (maybe they didn't mix it before pouring). \r \r I'm sorry Juan. But la verdad es la verdad. \r \r To be fair, I think it would be a cool place to hang out and have beers, because the interior is pretty cool. Ahhh, I needed to end on a positive note. Pros: The interior is cool and I was seated very quickly Cons: The food is straight out of Chevy's...only worse more

RAD 5/25/2005

This is the best mexican food in all the northern california land! As a san diego native, i missed sit-down mexican places with great tasting, authentic food for the first year i was here - - THEN, i was magically introduced to Juan's Place: the answer to my mexican food prayers to the Virgin Gaudelupe Hidalgo! The wine margaritas rock (don't listen to these other peeps), but i got lost the first 4 times i drove there - i suggest mapquest, bringing a huge appetite and a loved one or group of amigos fantasticos! I think it's awesome! try the shrimp fajitas! Pros: food/prices, birthday songs, down-home feel more

Best Mexi in Berkeley 3/24/2005

The biggest problem this place has is its out of the way location. You really have to be brought here by a friend to discover it becasue it is so off the beaten track. Once you find it though, you will be hooked. Huge prtions and resonable prices, good ambiance and great for large groups. The one drawback is that the Margaritas are made with Wine becasue they don't have a hard liquor license. They still taste good though, by the pitcher. Seriously, the best Mexican food in the East Bay. Pros: Good food Cons: No Hard Liquor more

Jaun's is the Best 11/10/2004

Jaun's place is the best mexican food you will find in the bay area...probably the best mexican food in the world...its a great place to go with the family and kids or if you just want to have a party...the service is excellent and the food is authentic mexican style home cooking...also, be careful and make sure your really hungry because they give you a lot of food for so little money...check out the best place, Jaun's place... more

Best Neighborhood Surprise 5/18/2004

You just have to go to this place to appreciate it. It's somewhere out in the nebulous warehouse area of west Berkeley, so it feels like a well-kept secret, which is part of the fun for me. The waiters are great, the strawberry margaritas come by the pitcher -- bring your rowdy friends! The waiters seem to love that kind of crowd. Don't get a burrito here, they're too sloppy. And remember, this place is fatty, greasy down-home food in the BEST sense. This is not Chevy's! But I must admit, I am a gringa and I sometimes request their flour tortilla chips because they are so delicious. more
